Canadian’s Clubbed!!!

with 14 comments

The Bombers “make hay weekend “ started early with a nice 3 game sweep of the Toronto Canadians.. The win was extra special thanks to Mitchell, Severino, and T-Clip throwing 9 innings of goose eggs vs a lethargic, maybe looking ahead to  their Boston series Canadian squad who just lost 5 of 6 road games….

At the moment the Yanks are 2.5 games behind the Orioles who hold down the 2nd WC spot.. Toronto is the #1 WC Seed, with Boston now in 1st place in the AL East…

The Tigers are a game behind Baltimore, the Astros 2, the Yanks 2.5.. The Royals and M’s are 4 and 5 games off the pace

This is a make hay  weekend with the Yanks facing Tampa Bay for 4 games, while some of the teams in front of them play  each other

Baltimore: a day off,  3 in Detroit, and 3 in Boston

Detroit: day off, then Baltimore for 3, Minnesota for 4, @Cleveland for 3..

They play Cleveland 7 more times, Minnesota 7, KC 3, Atlanta 3… Softer schedule, and the Yanks don’t have any games directly with the Tigers, so  they need help from some bad teams…

Houston: plays 1 more with Cleveland, then 3 each  with the Cubs, Rangers, and Seattle.. 10 of their last 13 games are against Anaheim and Oakland…

Toronto: day off, then Boston for 3, Tampa 3, on the road to Anaheim 4, Seattle 3, off day  then finish with @home NY 4, Baltimore 3, @Boston 3

Boston: plays Toronto  6 more times, Baltimore 7, Tampa Bay 3, NYY 7….So Boston plays 20 of their last 23 games vs teams still in the hunt…

The Yanks: have 24 games left, Tampa Bay 7, Toronto 4, Baltimore 3, Boston 7, LA Dodgers 3…

The Yanks have the next 7 games at  home, Tampa 4, Dodgers 3

And the last 6 games of the season at home, Boston 3, Baltimore 3..

In between they play 11 games on the road, Boston 4, Tampa Bay 3, Toronto 4

The Improbable Sweep

Bryan Mitchell with Hideki Matsui’s #55 pinned on his back took the mound knowing both the Tigers and the O’s lost nail biters Wednesday afternoon.. Finally, a chance for the Bombers to pick up a game on 2 of the 3 teams in front of them in the WC race.. If you really want to day dream, we could include the team that was temporarily leading the AL East Division, which now belongs to Boston 4.5 games in front..

Mitchell off the DL with 21 minor league innings under his 2016 belt, kept the long and daunting Canadian line-up off the board for 5+ innings..

The booth remarked Mitchell’s Dead Man’s Curve ball didn’t really have much depth, and his command of the pitch  was shaky, but the Romine Empire who donned the tools yesterday was the contrary

“You have three pitches like that and then a changeup that moves just as much, they’re going to have fits trying to get some hits over there,” Romine said. “It’s going to look bad. His curveball was really working; we pitched in to make them uncomfortable. There weren’t too many comfortable at-bats that whole night.”

You have to love Romine, who  we hope sticks around next year, anyway Cone made the point how his cutter was cutting into  the RHB heavy Toronto line-up and Mitch  was getting soft contact..

What I did notice, Toronto seems to  really grind out AB’s, especially against  young pitchers with potential  command issues on the mound. Bautista 18  and Donaldson 21 saw the most pitches.. Gardner 21 and McCann 18 ditto for the Yanks

Toronto saw 143 pitches, the Yanks 133….

Mitchell predominately used 3 pitches, a 4 seam FB (46), a FB cutter (18), and a curve ball (16)….

He only generated 5 swings and misses, but his pitch count stayed low based on pitching to  contact, and his ground ball  to  fly ball  ratio in a HR band box was excellent

 Ground Balls-Fly Balls: Mitchell 10-3;

Inning Pitches in Inning Strikes in Inning Strike% in Inning Cumulative Total Pitches Pitch LWTS in Inning
1 12 8 66.67 12 -0.575
2 21 13 61.90 33 -0.004
3 23 11 47.83 56 -0.427
4 9 8 88.89 65 -0.335
5 9 6 66.67 74 -0.848
6 6 3 50.00 80 0.829

Mitchell’s only tough inning was the 3rd when he walked the first  2 batters… He induced a killer 5-4-3 DP to get out of the inning unscathed.. He also got E-Encarnacion to belt into 5-4-3 DP in the first inning..

He worked around a 2 out Tulowitzki double in the 2nd… Up 2-0, Mitchell pitched a shut down  4th inning working around a Bautista single.. A 1-2-3 5th  earned him a chance at the 6th inning but a lead off double ended his night

5 innings, 4 hits, no  runs, 2 BB’s, 2 K’s, 80/49 pitches, earned him another start next week…

Severino continued to be a WMD out of the bull pen pitching 3 innings, 1 hit, 1 BB, 3 K’s, so the two Baby Bombers combined for  8 innings, 4 hits, 3 BB’s, 5 K’s, in a playoff run, vs a real good hitting team!!

Severino was predominately  a 2 pitch pitcher, but his slider had great  “tilt / depth” to it, 50 of his 52 pitchers were fast ball / slider, with 2 show me change ups

Pitch Type Velo (Max) H-Break V-Break Count Strikes / % Swings / % Whiffs / % BIP (No Out) SNIPs / % LWTS

If or when Severino is able to  really command his pitches, with his electric stuff  batters will be  electrocuted first  come, first  serve

Inning Pitches in Inning Strikes in Inning Strike% in Inning Cumulative Total Pitches Pitch LWTS in Inning
6 16 9 56.25 16 -0.848
7 21 14 66.67 37 0.758
8 15 8 53.33 52 -0.532

After Travis’s lead off double in the 6th, Severino  had to  work through Donaldson, E-Encarnacion, and Joey Bats, with  a man in already scoring position

Severino relieved Mitchell. 0 2
Donaldson grounded into fielder’s choice to pitcher, Travis out at third, Donaldson to second. 0 2
Encarnación grounded out to third. 0 2
Bautista struck out swinging. 0 2

The Joey Bats punch out was a spring board to the next 2 innings…Severino  worked around a one out Tulo double in the 7th, punching out Upton  with a man on third

After 2 quick outs in the 8th, he walked Donaldson then got E-Encarnacion on a long and loud F/9…. Judge caught the potential tying HR in front of the right field wall to  end the inning

Clippard closed the 9th  with relative ease, 2 punch outs and a foul pop up..

Hit(s) and Run(s)

The Bombers scored both of their runs in the 3rd inning a Castro Big Fly and an Bubbles McCan’t RBI single

Gardner popped out to third. 0 0
Ellsbury grounded out to second. 0 0
Castro homered to left (392 feet). 0 1
Gregorius doubled to left. 0 1
Teixeira walked. 0 1
McCann singled to right, Gregorius scored, Teixeira to third. 0 2
Headley struck out swinging. 0 2

The Yanks  picked up 9 hits, everybody but Humpty Teixeira and Romine had at least one knock..

DoughBoy and Gardner had 2 hits apiece,…There were 3 extra base hits, Castro HR, and doubles by D-Gregorius and Ellsbury,

The only Rook to start  was Austin who  went 1-3 with 2 K’s…

Judge who  replaced Austin defensively got 1 AB an F/7, so his K rate dropped!!!

Yankees RISP: 1-6 (McCann 1-1, Headley 0-1, Castro 0-2, Teixeira 0-2)
Team LOB: 9

Yanks face the tough Alex Cobb tonight.. Sabathia toes the rubber for the Yanks

Helm was a slight of hand master, he’d shake your hand with one hand, pick your pocket with the other….

    16 K

    • Sabathia is hell bent to not have the Yanks keep a lead

They need 7 innings 3 runs from him

If the offense can’t score 4 or more runs shame on them

      His isn’t vintage Cobb

      September 8, 2016 at 8:19 pm

    • CC Sabathia Since July 1:
      – 15 HR allowed, 4th most in MLB
      – 84.4 mph exit velo on batted balls, 3rd lowest in MLBJuly 1:

Bubbles McCant is giving the Braves a chubby…

  3. Girardi before the game on Sabathia: “Any time you can induce soft contact you’re going to take your chances.”

Obviously the Rays don’t listen to Lying Joe either

  4. Holder has some good looking breaking stuff, but man when he misses his spot he’s a launching pad

That Souza Hr had enough frequent flyer miles attached to it the whole Rays team could upgrade to first class flights

  5. If this was the Ellsbury they paid for, he’d steal 2 bases and score on a sac fly….but they’re 3 or 4 yrs too late

    September 8, 2016 at 9:55 pm

    • At this point it would be a good idea to take the bat out of Sanchez’s hands, he should have swiped the base

      September 8, 2016 at 10:00 pm

  6. This game is starting to feel like the Rays came to grind, and the Yanks can’t match their energy

Almost like they’re waiting for somebody to run into one and they’re wailing away
