Balk Don’t Run

Now this whole thing is shaping up so improbably that there seems to be some magic at play. How can these teams not end up playing postseason baseball after the strange path they’ve taken?

If you’re a NY baseball  fan, the Mets and Yanks have given you a bang for your buck.. The Mets were supposed to beat  the drums louder then the Yanks this season, but a series of injuries to key players had them beating nothing but empty barrels instead…

Watching a Yule Log with no sound on was more exciting then NY Yankees baseball from April  to the end of July.. A trip to Tampa in late July resulted in a “not what  we were looking for” moment as our hometown heroes were swept..

I think  the straw that stirred Hal’s patience on that  sweep week end was the game 2 loss..  A-Rod’s last chance ended with  him donning the Golden Sombrero.. He made it 5 punch outs in a row when he pinch hit and struck out in the 3rd and final loss of that  3 game series

Two weeks later, He Gone.. By September 1st Miller, Beltran, Chapman and Nova had all been traded for prospects.. The Yanks also  brought in Adam Warren  and Tyler Clippard to  replace Miller and Chappy…

Up came the Bambinos, up  went the runs scored, win totals, and the energy level.

Last night it looked too me like Tampa Bay wanted to derail  the Bombers magical ride a little bit more then the Yanks wanted it to keep  going, but one of those Bambino’s smacked a 9th inning walk off Yankee Stadium HR to right field for yet another improbable win..

The unimaginable player this time was Tyler Austin who after a hot 2 game start to his Bomber career, was benched 2 days by Psycho Joe, then went dormant (3 for 29) in the shadow of Gary Sanchez’s August month of magic tricks that pretty much trumped everything else

Since September 4th Austin is 7 for 16, 2 doubles, 2 HR’s,

From September 1st .412 /.444 / .882 /  1.327

In the  9th inning  Bubbles McCan’t tried for his third Big Fly of the night, but it was caught on the warning track.. Headless swinging for the downs popped up, but on the 7th pitch of his AB, Austin delivered a 92 MPH pitch into  the right field seats for the 5-4 win

The Austin pop  was exciting but the lunch pale crew of Holder, Shreve, Parker, Yates and the eventual winner Tommy Penny Layne, deserve the Buckle as much  as Austin

The much  maligned Gidrool troop, stepped up big time after Sabathia quit on his stool in the 5th inning with 2 on no outs and Longoria coming up..

Sabathia didn’t have it last night, 4 innings, 7 hits, 3 runs, 4 K’s, no  BB’s, 3 HR’s.. It’s amazing the Yanks were able to even stay in this game the way he was dealing.. Lucky for the Bombers the 3 HR’s he coughed up  were all solo shots.

CC Sabathia Since July 1:
– 15 HR allowed, 4th most in MLB
– 84.4 mph exit velo on batted balls, 3rd lowest in MLB

Holder came in and induced Longoria to  kill the rally by bouncing into  a 5-4-3 DP…

Holder the SWB reliever guru got the next 3 batters out, but with  2 outs in the 6th he left a meatball over the plate and Souza hit the Rays 4th HR of the night to  tie the game 4-4

Before the Austin heroics swept this play under the rug, Holder committed a balk, that somehow McCann and Lying Joe got over turned.. The balk would have tied the game.. The Souza HR would have put the Rays in the lead, the walk off may have been a tie game, or non existent…Maybe the 2nd biggest play of this win for the Yanks

Psycho Joe was gifted the next 9 outs by Shreve, Parker, Yates and Layne, but the game crawled to an  excruciatingly slow pace as P-Joe pushed all  the buttons on his chemistry set trying to  steal  the 5th Bomber win in a row…

With no  traditional closer available, it was good the Yanks crawled to  the 9th inning and 27 outs, it was now walk off or bust..

Thankfully after McCan’t  and Headless missed the midnight train, Austin was there to drive the bus home with the Yanks 74th  win..

Believe it or not the Bombers are now 9 games over .500

The Yanks scored 2 runs  in the 1st on 3 singles and an errant pick off attempt to  take a 2-1 lead..

Souza’s 1st Tater tied it in the 2nd, Bubbles  McCan’t gave Sabathia his 2nd lead to  blow with his 1st Big Fly of the night in the bottom of the 2nd, 3-2 Yanks

Kiermaier who blasted a Tater in the 1st inning, homered to right (372 feet) to tie it in the 3rd, 3-3,  but McCan’t smacked his 2nd Tater in the 4th  to  give NY a 4-3 lead..

Holder coughed up  the Souza Bomb in the 6th  to  tie it 4-4, it was locked there until Austin’s walk off poke finished it..

Bubbles McCan’t is now 6 for 19 with  3 HR’s in September .316 / .350 / .789 / 1.139

This is timely with Sanchez going through  a 3 for 20  with  7 K’s “market correction”

Aaron K Judge is also  3 for 20 with 11 K’s in September, so he’s only 4 K’s worse then  the SanBino at the moment.. Judge has gone 5 PA’s in a row without a punch out, and last night he went 1 for 3 with a walk  and No K’s

Judge’s market won’t correct until he goes on his first roll, Sanchez had his shining moment, Austin is having his, maybe Judge will be next

the Yanks are 4 games out of first place, and 2 games out of a WC

the Whole 9

  1. great win… the Happiest guy on the team, Eric Young, the designated pinch runner was going nuts after the walk off…… These kids are feeling it

  2. Tyler Austin is 1st Yankee rookie with 2-out walk-off HR since Bobby Murcer on Aug. 5, 1969 vs Angels.

Tyler Austin is 1st Yankee rookie with walkoff HR since Melky Cabrera on July 18, 2006 vs Mariners.

  3. Yanks have now adopted the Lovin Spoonful’s “Do You Believe In Magic” as their official fight song. It’s been truly amazing watching what’s going on here lately. Finally, the Yanks are starting to catch a few breaks here, along with mostly stellar play by the kids in the basement.

There’s a real energy there now. You can feel it. And see it. Just tune into Al Yankazerra on a nightly basis, these kids have infused the team in a very positive way.
Watching Austin’s hang time over home plate was a little scary. I couldn’t help but think about when Kendry Morales had a walk off a few years ago & broke his leg doing just what Austin did last night.

As improbable as it seems, the Yanks are now firmly established & recognized as being in the thick of this, “this thing of ours”
If somehow they can keep this going, it could be a September to remember.

    • hey mB, yeah that jump on home plate was silly, they need to stop that….John Sebastian would love your idea of a Spoonful tune being a Yankee theme song ….

That old pot head has made so much money off hot town summer in the city and welcome back C, with Cotter, he’s got penny loafers made out of $1000 dollar Cleveland’s with diamonds on the soles

And those are his shoes he wears to lounge around Woodstock, not even his dressing up to play the blues shoes….

  6. SanBino picks off a runner on 2nd base from his knees

Something has to be wrong with Pineda
You can’t morph from Cy Young to Sy Sims in one inning unless you’re hurt, right?

Rogers Centre looks like a beer softball crowd, tremendous

They better get an armed guard escort for Upton
He’s a gift that keeps on giving

Red Sox should vote him a player share
