Tanaka Time Again

with 16 comments

The September 11 attacks were a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks by the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda on the United States on the morning of September 11, 2001.

A moment of silence in Memory of 911, Never Forget

Well  the Yanks are certainly helping ease a fraction of the pain inflicted by the horrors of 911.. Of course nothing will  ever totally erase that memory, and our condolences go out to  every human being who lost a loved one during and post that  cowardly attack…

Tanaka Time Again

Moscone mentioned, imagine if they  didn’t start  at 9-17?

I grabbed the low hanging fruit and said, apparently all  they had to  do  was DFA A-Rod, bring up Sanchez, Austin  and Refsynder, start Severino in the bull pen, turn McCann, and Teixeira into bench /  role players, trade Nova, and DH Beltran…

Of course we know hind sight, along with death,  taxes, and father time, remains undefeated…

As a wise PED pusher once said, “It is what  it is”

Yes it’s easy to put all  the pieces together when things are going right, but who’s to  say  this August Baby Bomber blood transfusion would have worked in April when  expectations are at  a different level..?

When  the Yanks decided to drop  anchor with a youth movement at the deadline, there was little to no  expectations.. Only the Yankees Company Store conveyed any sort of bravado, saying “We’re not waving the white flag”..

Of course the skepticism in that  statement was dominating any grandiose delusions of a pennant race in September.

The Yanks piled yesterday’s 5-1 /  7th  consecutive victory, on the backs of Tanaka, Ellsbury , Gardner, and  Sanchez..

A 7.1  inning pitching clinic, back to back Jacks that  amounted to 3 runs, and a pair of Sac Fly’s were just enough to take down a very tough Chris Archer and company…

Tanaka was vintage yesterday, the way  this young man has transitioned his game to support that  wounded wing, is a gift to Yankees Universe, and a bold statement reflecting the character of this brilliant pitcher..

The Rays are a swashbuckling team when it comes to swinging for the fences, they’re 5th in the AL in HR’s, (191) 31 more HR’s the the Yanks (160) have hit..

They’re also 14th in OBP, dead last in Batting Average, and 2nd behind Houston in striking out… Long story short, the Rays are  tailor made for Tanaka, and he sliced them up like a master Sushi chef

7.1 innings, 5 hits, 1 run, no BB’s, 10 K’s

That’s 6 different type pitching grips, and depending on the mechanics, they land in spots that most of the time require a row boat paddle to  hit them.. Tanaka mentioned at his post game presser how he changed his right leg mechanics, the leg he pushes off, and the leg that balances his rhythm when  delivering his pitches..

Tanaka had the balance of a Baryshnikov, and his ball  was dancing like, well like this guy

The one pitch  that  got away, an errant slider in the 8th inning to  a weak hitting catcher,  turned a 3-0 comfort zone, into  a 3-1 nail biter

Mahtook struck out swinging. 0 3
Wilson homered to left (373 feet). 1 3
Forsythe hit by pitch. 1 3
Warren relieved Tanaka. 1 3
Franklin hit by pitch, Forsythe to second. 1 3
Longoria grounded into double play, shortstop to second to first, Franklin out at second. 1 3

Warren  relieved Tanaka after 102 pitches, and he also put a man on base via the HBP.. Unfortunately what  was a Tanaka gem, had now morphed into  complete chaos with Longoria the go  ahead run at the plate facing the generic Adam Warren…

No worries Warren induced a nifty 6-4-3 DP to  stop  the bleeding at  3-1

The Bombers nailed the coffin shut in the bottom of the 8th by plating 2 runs to  make it a steeper hill  to climb for Tampa at  5-1

Romero relieved Archer. 1 3
Gardner singled to left. 1 3
Ellsbury hit a ground rule double to left, Gardner to third. 1 3
Sánchez hit sacrifice fly to center, Gardner scored, Ellsbury to third. 1 4
Gregorius hit sacrifice fly to center, Ellsbury scored. 1 5
Castro grounded out to pitcher. 1 5

The Sanchez Sac Fly made the evening news.. Romero was intentionally walking the SanBino when the kid double clutched and swung at a 52 MPH meatball  that  drifted too  close to  the batters box… Boom a long sac fly to  dead central made it 4-1

D-Gregorius followed suit to  cap it at  5-1

the Standings

With  21 games remaining the Bombers win and the Boston loss moved the Yanks to  3 games out of 1st place

Baltimore beat up on Detroit, and Toronto nipped Boston so the Yanks are tied with Detroit, 1 game behind Baltimore for the 2nd WC spot.. Toronto  for now is the #1 WC Seed

The Yanks are 2 games behind Toronto  in the loss column

AL East

Boston 79-62

Toronto 78-63

Orioles 77-64

Yanks 76-65

the Whole 9

  2. Way, way premature, but I want to dream and believe that we have our own Johnny Bench on our hands. the kid is wise beyond his years. The throw he made to second from his knees on Friday night was no less than the best of the best.
I think Jack Curry said recently that of the top ten catcher’s throws to second this entire year in terms of velocity, Sanchez has five of the ten.
I hope I got that right and think I did.

    • hey noogsie..Sanchez adjusted after that “market adjustment 25 AB stretch and got back into that amazing pitch recognition / plate coverage stuff..He’s not only physically gifted, but his baseball acumen seems to be off the charts, I’m totally in agreement with you…..Shocked at how great of a defensive player he is, and yes that throw was sick

Man nobody wants to play rhythm guitar behind Jesus, they all want to be the lead singer in the band.. I coulda built Jeter a new mansion with all the square footage Teixeira had on the left side, level the swing, go with the pitch, move the line Tex.. just help load the wagon

  3. That was a tough 2 runs Louie coughed up, Yanks better start to chip away here, this is no time to help morph Andriese into Greg Maddux

    • Toronto has their hot shot prospect Sanchez pitching Bradley just took him deep for a 3 run HR… 4-1 Boston in the One Hand Clap Series

      September 11, 2016 at 1:46 pm

  4. One hand clap. LOL I remember when you posted a video of that once, Sal. the meaning of it is so clear.

    September 11, 2016 at 1:50 pm

      September 11, 2016 at 3:00 pm

  5. Tulowitski just hit a grand salami making it 6-4 Jays!!

    September 11, 2016 at 2:21 pm

    • I guess the pithing aint that good up north

Severino in a 4-1 deficit? I think Cessa may have pitched his way out of the rotation or Psycho Joe thinks they can score some runs off Whitley and the pen..?.

The offense looks tired today, bad day to cough up 4 Taters…. My guess Severino gets the next Cessa start?? Or this is a legit hold role

      September 11, 2016 at 3:02 pm

  6. I get the feeling Cessa stays in the rotation & Little Louie remains in his present role out of the bullpen for the remainder of the season.
    But, WTF do I know???

    September 11, 2016 at 3:50 pm

    • Yes I agree P Joe had to think they would score more fen 4 and Severino was in there to hold serve

      September 11, 2016 at 8:06 pm

  7. Sherman writing an article about Cessa coughing up 4 runs in a pennant race blah blah

Dude, the offense lost this game
If you can’t score more then 4 runs off Andreise and Whitley then you don’t deserve to win

    September 11, 2016 at 8:04 pm

    • 3 taters it just felt like 4 lol

      September 11, 2016 at 8:07 pm

actually Sherman referenced how the offense sputtered against

The Yankees’ 4-2 loss to the Rays hardly was a Cessa production alone. In his five starts before Sunday, Tampa Bay’s Matt Andriese had pitched to a 9.95 ERA and a 1.061 OPS against. He is the sixth man in a six-man rotation built to accommodate the return of Alex Cobb after Tommy John surgery.
