Grave Diggers

The Yanks didn’t dig a hole for themselves playing 4 months of mediocre baseball, they  dug a grave.. With  20 games left to  the regular season, if they play a few more games like yesterday, all that will be  left is throwing dirt over it..

Of course thanks to a 24- 14 August  and September run, the Bombers find themselves 4 games out of 1st place in the AL East, and now along with Detroit, 2 games in back of Baltimore and Canada for the WC

The Yanks  have 3 more home games vs the Dodgers, then hit the road for 4 in Boston, 3 in Tampa, and 4 in Canada, before heading back  home for 3 vs Boston  and 3 vs Baltimore to  end the regular season..

That’s more of  a walk through a land mine then a walk in the park…

Spoiled Sports

You can’t win everyday, but it’s tough to swallow a loss that looked like a Win on paper

Yesterday’s loss was as frustrating as any the Bombers have had all season.. Arriving on an emotional 911 Sunday riding a 7 game winning streak, yes they  were  using smoke and mirrors to navigate through some of the detours along the way, but the Bombers were set up  to make it 8 in row..

They had held off Tampa’s  Ace Chris Archer the day before, today’s starting pitcher(s) Matt Andriese who  was to be followed by rehabbing off TJ surgery Chase Whitley was a tailor made momentum grabber

In his five starts before Sunday, Tampa Bay’s Matt Andriese had pitched to a 9.95 ERA and a 1.061 OPS against. He is the sixth man in a six-man rotation built to accommodate the return of Alex Cobb after Tommy John surgery.

Man how do  you come out flat on 911????

Bag Pipes and snare drums creating an eerie almost outer worldly  Din, American Flags flying everywhere, emotions rising to  tearful levels, and a home town fan base ready to  erupt with healing enthusiasm..

It was a Bad day to lay and offensive egg, which is really what  sunk  the Bombers on Sunday, not the 3 Taters and 4 runs rookie Luis Cessa gave up

As we pointed out yesterday,  the Rays are a swashbuckling HR hitting team,( 5th in the AL)

After turning Cessa out for 3 HR’s yesterday they’re now at  194 .. By contrast the Yanks have smacked 161 ( 11th in the AL)

The only run NY could muster off what looked to be low hanging fruit was a 5th inning HR by Headless.. That inning started to look like possibly the Bombers finally had  M-Andriese’s number after  now seeing him for the 2nd time when Judge followed the HR with  a single..

Torreyes who has been sensational, couldn’t move the line…After a little soft grounder back to  the pitcher forced Judge at  2nd, you thought OK we have a faster runner on board now, no problem

Unfortunately Torreyes was throw out trying too  steal  2nd base, by a whisker, and that preceded a Gardner single that  would have tied the game 2-2..

It was only the 2nd threat  NY had off Andriese, who  they had managed to make look like Greg Maddux.. The tone of this sluggish NY offense was set in the very 1st inning.. With 2 outs Sanchez and McCan’t singled, Teixeira with  a chance to take down a struggling pitcher and a last place team going nowhere tried to yank an outside fast ball  to right field, but he popped up  to left field to kill the momentum

Andriese 5 innings, 6 hits, 1 run, 2 K’s, NO BB’s, 1 HR….

Chase Whitley coming off Tommy John surgery pitched a clean 6th inning.. Down 4-1 the Bombers blew their 3rd chance to pile up  crooked numbers..

Headless picked up  a 1 out walk, Judge popped up,  but Castro reached base on a rare Longoria error, the Ghosts were trying to  wake these guys up…

Gardner hit an RBI single to make it 4-2, then stole 2nd base to put the tying run in scoring position…The DoughBoy in the midst of decent streak  went back to  sucking yesterday… He went down quickly on an innocuous F/7 to end the rally…It was his third F/7 of the day (3rd, 5th  and 7th innings)

The offense quit on it’s stool for that last 6 outs and the streak  was over..

No SucCessa

Luis Cessa was making the Justin Wilson trade look promising, and the take on his performance was, he shows a lot of upside…If you’re looking at  the Bombers future Cessa did some nice things, 4 pitches, works fast, throw strikes etc despite the tendency to  give up HR’s ..

If you’re greedy  and want to  now win this damn thing  in 2016, Cessa wasn’t your man, and he was gonna need some run support..( see Rick Porcello’s 8 RS per game)

From Joel Sherman’s article

The 24-year-old displayed his positives and negatives throughout. He retired the first five he faced, including striking out the first two batters of the second inning. But Nick Franklin then singled and Cessa got an 0-1 fastball where he was trying, up above the strike zone to Corey Dickerson, but the Rays DH tomahawked it into the right-field seats.

Cessa retired 10 of the next 11 before Logan Forsythe opened the sixth with a homer. Cessa put down the next two Rays, which convinced Girardi not to go with the warming Tommy Layne for a lefty-lefty matchup against power-hitting Brad Miller. Miller launched his 26th homer, knocking out Cessa.

Severino  came into  the 4-1 game to  relieve Cessa… I thought possibly Cessa had pitched himself out of the rotation, I mean why waste Severino in a 4-1 game…?

Psycho Joe had to  think the Yanks would get to Whitley and Severino  was his best  shot to hold serve.. Severino  was once again very good not allowing a run to  score in 2.1 innings of work

He had an adventurous 7th inning but  managed to gut it out unscathed.. The vibe  from P-Joe at his presser was keeping Severino  right where he is, coming out of the pen..Another bad start where he gets lit up  could be detrimental  to his advancement..

At the moment he’s a bona-fide weapon coming as a reliever, let him head into the off season  feeling like he accomplished something is my guess the M.O. is?

Yanks Dodgers tonight Battle of kids, De Leon vs Mitchell

the Whole 9

This and That

Jim Callis put’s Yoan Moncada on the MLB Pipeline Team of the Year ?

I get the #1 prospect ranking, but that’s a crap shoot evaluation before they get a call  to the varsity..

Good chance Moncada won’t be given an AB based on his strikeout rate and the fact he wasn’t identifying breaking pitches.. After going 4 for 10 vs the atrocious Oakland Triple A’s, Moncada is 0-8 with 8 strikeouts.

Boston figured no  worries,  he’ll be our Post Season pinch  runner.. That lasted until  he forgot there were two outs when he entered a game vs Toronto, as a pinch  runner...

Dude, you’re playing for  Boston, that fan base and media knows what  type of tooth paste you use and have a stat for it.. The team is in a pennant race, so Moncada’s gaffes will infuriate the Nation… They  also have to protect their $63M investment and if indeed the game is moving too fast for him after jumping up  from Double A, bypassing Triple A, and he bombs like Rusney Castillo, then what???

Farrell  will of course continue to use Minor League sensation, if you’ve seen him run, he’s grease lightning.. They  also have to  figure out if he can  steal bases in the bigs with  the same prowess as he did at single and double A..

As for Moncada getting his 2nd consecutive Pipeline Award, it’s MLB arm  candy…  There are 3 other 2nd baseman who have  won the Prospect Team Of the Week Award on the varsity level, 3 times already

Dodgers second baseman Willie Calhoun, Indians second baseman Tyler Krueger, Rangers/Braves second baseman Travis Demeritte

Only Gary Sanchez has won it 4 times

    • that’s probably it lol

first time i’ve seen the game speed up on Sanchez, Shreve had that dude lost at the plate, Roberts just outsmarted the Yanks and Sanchez stealing that base…

Sanchez and Judge cost the Yanks 3 runs on defense…. Mitchell wasn’t fooling anybody tonight…Our magic carpet ride may be running out of gas fellas… Unless the bats have some life in them..

Mitchell, Judge, Sanchez…hard to say if it’s the reason, but inexperience is showing with costly mistakes. 4 of 6 LA runs are unearned.

  9. I almost threw up when I saw that milkshake drinker tie the Mick!! Disgusting!! Not a good game for our heroes tonight, its impossible to win every game. Judge made an error,do you think Beltran would have gotten to that ball?-lol He hit a monster homerun into the bleachers an incredible shot. I still enjoy watching the 3 rookies play, strikeouts and all. They will only get better with the experience. I was watching Brickhouse on the pregame, she reported that Hicks is running,is heading to Tampa for rehab, and may rejoin the team when they play the Rays. NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!-lol They need him like a hole in the head,
someone will be losing valuable playing time. DonB,great job!!!
