Turn Out the Lights

with 18 comments

The Red Sox must think it’s April, and Boston College is in the house, that’s pretty much  what last night’s 7-4 loss  felt like..

In fact I don’t how Boston only ended up  with just  7 runs??  They  ran  themselves out of a huge 1st inning when Pedroia and Big Roidie tried to  turn back  the clock  and stretch  singles into  doubles, but  were rudely  gunned down….

We’d still be in the 1st inning with Cessa trying to get the 1st out on his own if two of the older gentleman in Boston’s line-up hadn’t misbehaved….

The Yanks are still  alive because the math  says they  are but “let’s be honest” after Tanaka threw a gem at Boston’s juggernaut offense for 7 complete innings, and handed Psycho Joe a 5-1 lead, P-Joe has pushed just  about every wrong button on the board from that point until  the last painful out on Friday night..

From handing Warren  the ball when Tanaka was only at  93 pitches in the 8th, to not letting either Clippard or Betances start the 9th  inning with no  base runners and a 3 run lead on Thursday…

Francesa was a complete joke trying to  justify Psycho Joe’s moves, mentioning if Tanaka had to  “trow a – hunnert 8-teen pitch’is, he wood be done 4 da next start”

Hey Fatso, if the Yanks lose this game the next Tanaka start  won’t matter..

Once again we can run the manager out of town if we want, and we all hope they come to  their senses Re: Psycho Joe, but we can’t let CashMan slide either

I still  think it’s the guy  shopping for groceries that’s  responsible for the endless parade of gidrools we’ve seen come out of the bull pen, not only this yr but last yr too…CashMan did a nice job putting together BMC, but it’s still up  for  debate if the trades he made are gonna pan out

Anyway last night’s game, without a Cy Young contender neutralizing  Boston’s superior offense exposed  the Yanks for what  they are at the moment, a JV team playing the varsity

Boston has scored exactly 200 more runs than the Yankees this season, 819-619. You don’t need to be a sabermetrician to figure out that makes it much easier to win. The Red Sox had seven players in Friday’s lineup who entered the game batting at least .284. The only two hitters below that were No. 9 hitter Jackie Bradley Jr. at .272 and Travis Shaw at .253. Incidentally, Bradley’s 24 homers and 84 RBIs are better than anyone in the Yankees’ lineup. Shaw’s 70 RBIs are better than anyone on the Yankees’ card. The Red Sox’s David Ortiz, Mookie Betts and Hanley Ramirez all have 100-plus RBIs.

Once again P-Joe was on the griddle for yanking Cessa after just  64-40 pitches and 5 innings of work…Cessa after a rough 1st inning, that  thankfully Pedroia and Big Roidie helped him escape found a rhythm and worked a clean 2nd and 3rd innings..

The Cafeteria Lady got him for a solo Tater in the 4th to make it 3-0, but he worked around a double, then pitched a quick 9 pitch  5th inning wiping Bradley Pedroia and Bogaerts out of the way

Psycho Joe once again started to over manage based on metrics and in the 6th inning after yanking Cessa who seemed to be in rhythm… The first  Gidrool he brings in is Jimmy Pazos he of a .500 BAA, and an 18.00 ERA…

No need to re-live the gory aftermath of yet another Gidrool infested meltdown, Pazos, Holder,  Shreve, and Yates combined for 3 innings, 6 hits, 4 runs..

Heller surprisingly pitched a clean 1-2-3 inning vs Boston’s bottom of the line up, which is still better the  the bombers top of the line up……

 This and That

First off the season as far as playoffs are concerned is theoretically  over, we thank the Yanks for giving us a season that  carried us all  the way  to September 15th…

Up next should be audition time in the Bronx..

I’m not sure Babe Butler will be in NY’s 2017 plans, but  he looks like the Yanks best hitter at  the moment, so  we’ll  see him DH vs LHP, but I doubt it goes much  further then 2016.

Mason Williams has made another decent impression playing RF… Williams and Refsynder should get the bulk of the playing time, maybe add Jake Cave now that SWB is finished

Might as well  start  to take inventory on the out field depth, if these kids play well  they  can up-tick  their value on the trade market, or in-house..

Again CashMan has managed to create depth  at  a position, unfortunately every outfielder sans Judge, and Frazier, and Rutherford that  we’ve seen are Ellsbury / Gardner clones, so while we’d love to  flip Ellsbury and Gardner, it’s more realistic CashMan will flip kids like Refsynder, Williams,  or Cave…

With Torres in the fold, Mateo might be trade bait, Romine looks gone too unless they  can get McCan’t out of here, which I doubt they  can do  without eating a lot of that $34M left on his contract….?

Tyler Austin has another option so he may  stick  around in case Bird isn’t ready or he gets hurt again…Torreyes has the utility gig sewn up, I don’t think Refsynder has hit enough to justify his average glove…

Hicks as we know will get more rope, his value is too low to  trade, so might as well keep trying to get something out of him, he started to look not so hideous just before he hit the DL…

Gardner or Ellsbury, preferably both have to go, if they  really want to re-boot for real

Peodria  .330 .390 .461 and Bogaerts  .295 .354 .441 are what top of the order players on championship  teams are supposed to look like, not Gardner and DoughBoy, who  reek of too old to  rock  and roll

The SanBino  needs help or he’ll never get  anything to hit, what I’m seeing is a young power hitter who is starting to  chase low away, and a little over anxious trying to make something happen

It reminds me of 2013 Cano who  had nobody to protect him.. Castro  and D-Gregorius are nice offensive players but to be batting 4th  and 5th in the line-up  is never gonna fly in the AL East, or in any Division for that matter

Headless will be trade bait, but try dumping his remaining $26M on some team, see how that  pans out…?

The Yanks cleaned house releasing A-Rod, they’ll purge a bit more losing Teixeira, but they  won’t really start  to move forward until  they clear out Left Field and 3rd base..

Unfortunately I just  don’t see Headless being moved, which is OK the Yanks don’t have any prospects being blocked by Headless at the moment unless you move Castro  to  3rd base…

Speaking of which, and Sweeney Murti  brought this up  2 weeks ago, Castro has enough value to maybe find a decent trade scenario, possibly a young starting  pitcher?

Keeping Castro is fine too, but his value might never be this high again, and he’s still  young.. At 26 here’s his remaining contract

17:$9M, 18:$10M, 19:$11M, 20:$16M club option ($1M buyout)

He has 3 relatively cheap seasons and a $1M buyout, that wouldn’t hurt the Bombers payroll, and if he keeps hitting for some power moving him to  3rd base, might not be a bad idea

As for the manager who has a yr left on his contract @ $4M per

On Friday, Girardi’s touch was off again. The manager has had a fine run, but every move has backfired over the past two nights.

I still  think P-Joe will get the benefit of the doubt and we’ll be stuck  with him for another year, but they better think  long and hard who  they  want managing then next Core Group

Stump Girardi might not be the best  answer…..

    • lol… Well noogsie we have auditions now for the last 15 games, maybe they can do some spoiling.. These first 2 losses maybe will loosen the guys up, now that it’s unofficially over, but it looks like a talent issue, they desperately need somebody to help Sanchez next yr

I can see Harper or Machado in 2018, almost a must get…Then float guys like Judge Frazier Rutherford, Castro DD, Mateo or Torres, around them

at this point we also might want to think about where they land in the draft…. So wins will be good, but losses can’t hurt either, the more they lose the higher the draft pick the closer to a better prospect.. As long as dumbo Cashman doesn’t pick another Gardner Clone…

  3. OK so Cy Tanaka lowers his ERA to 2.97, best in AL now. The last Yankee to lead the AL in ERA was Rudy May in 1980.

Graig Nettles said Sparky Lyle went from “Cy Young to sayonara”. Lyle demanded a trade and a larger salary, but received neither.

Pretty much Tanaka has gone from Sayonara to Cy Young … Where’s that fat bastard Pedro Martinez, we want to talk to him lol….

    • Martinez said the pitcher may only escape this season healthy with a “magic trick.” Like what El Pollo, the same juice you claimed you and Big Roidie never touched????

  4. yanks are done, but they can throw a monkey wrench into this thing by taking out Price.. That would shake up the Nation

  5. Butler has 4 RBI in 5 plate appearances for Yankees. Drove in 3 in 38 August at bats for A’s. The 50K investment for 2016 has produced.

  7. Great take Sal, on last night’s game & the Yankee situation going forward.
Noogsie, loved your homage to the great Jimmy Durante!!

Since hitting Beantown, PJ has pushed every wrong button imaginable. Each decision worse than the last.
So much so, as I was telling Sal, that the booth last night euphemistically threw up it’s arms!
I have never heard them, specifically Kay, take PJ’s moves to task so emphatically.
    It was an uprising!!!

And he was right! Cone tried to balance things out, but in the end couldn’t defend PJ too much.
    A
While this was going on, there were many shots of the manager in the dugout looking on.
It almost seemed like Al Yankzeera was trying to fan the flames on this one.
    I dunno…..maybe I’m too paranoid
But that’s what it looked like to me.

    • alright mB….

      Thank You Monsta

The Romine Empire will make some team a really good back up catcher, or maybe a starter, see Cervelli..

Refsynder will make a decent role player in San Diego or Minnesota or Milwaukee

Gonna miss Romine, what a grinder, but I think they will hang on to McCan’t and not eat a portion of the $34M

Ref is flat out hitting his way off the team…..

  8. At least Price got bitch slapped.. When mitchell figures out how to throw curve balls in fast ball counts he’s gonna take another step up the ladder..

the SanBino made a nice adjustment on the 2-2 change up, Price had him guessing wrong until the 2 seamer stayed in his wheelhouse…

Now that the pressure is off they can go back to early August and play with house money.

trying to keep this Red Sox team off the board is an impossible task, but encouraging if Mitchell can stay with Price for 18 outs…

  9. Smoltz does nothing but jinx anybody he waxes poetic…..Please John just the facts don’t editorialize, lay off Sanchez, and tell us again how great Price is

    Castro Hammy I bet…. Make a weak line-up weaker…. That’s fucked up that’s gotta finish Castro’s season if it’s a hammy or strain……

    September 17, 2016 at 2:51 pm

  10. Girardi was caught with his pants down and no LHP getting ready for Ortiz… Again no feel, he dispatched the assignments, Severino will follow Mitchell etc, like ST, and that’s what he sticks to…..

    Sal

    September 17, 2016 at 3:12 pm

  11. Benintendi and Pedroia let Mitch off easy, but that’s a great AB from Bogaerts

Yanks have a nice stable of 3 inning pitchers, a full 2017 of learning might turn some of these guys into rotation pieces…

    Sal

    September 17, 2016 at 3:13 pm

  12. Severino and Romine never got in rhythm, Severino looked tentative the whole 6th inning, he got squeezed, his slider isn’t going happening, and he’s doing it with smoke and mirrors.. Then he gets paid back for the Benintendi free-be
