Yanks Throw Boston A Curve

with 9 comments

Congrats to  the Boston Red Sox for backing into  the 2016 Playoffs

“It’s crazy,” said David Ortiz, the retiring franchise icon whose final at-bat will appropriately come in the postseason. “I wanted to celebrate on that field so bad, but it is what it is. We’re going to celebrate anyway. I’m going to drown in this, man!”

Of course tonight “Big Juicey” will get his Mall at Rivera Avenue send off, but  last night as Humpty Teixeira’s game winning Salami cleared the bull pen welcome mat for a 5-3 walk off win, our vigilante  on the street, the DonB, gave Boston his Bronx Salute

HA !!!!
Eat shit & Die BoSucks.
Not on OUR Field !!!
Nice Farewell Tex !!!

So  there you have it …We also had our caporegime in the Paint family, Moscone, inside the building, so no doubt Kimbrel and Joe Kelly were given the  Frank ‘Frankie Five Angels’ Pentangle offer they couldn’t refuse

In the 5th inning I pleaded in a text to Moscone to “do  something”, and by Jesus he did…..

Much to  our chagrin, thanks to the punk ass Canadians getting beat by Baltimore, also in dramatic fashion,  Boston still managed to  clinch the Division while in NY..

That pile of dog shit they  wanted to leave on the Bomber’s infield grass, would now have to be shoveled out of the visitors clubhouse instead.

That’s one small step for  man, one giant leap for mankind.

Boston can  still  officially  eliminate the Bombers on their own field with  a win tonight..  Or Baltimore can do  the honors from Toronto if they beat Canada before heading to the Bronx for the last 3 games…

Our in the moment buzz was Teixeira’s Salami, and the fact Kimbrel imploded in the 9th inning, and Kelly couldn’t put Teixeira away, even  with his trademark 99 MPH fast ball

Looks like Holaday is looking for a fast ball on the outer half, and maybe elevated.. Try to get Teixeira to pull  an outside fast ball, which usually results in a pop up or a roll over grounder into  the shift

As you can see Kelly’s 4 seamer leaked back over the plate and he set it on a Tee for Tex, who really had to put a swing on it, the balls were being blown back all night long..

Dead Man’s Curve

The buzz for the future was a very good outing by Bryan Mitchell

7 innings, 2 hits, no  runs, 5 BB’s, 2 K’s

The results and the eye test  both indicated this was the Bryan Mitchell  we were hoping would start  the season in the Bronx, not on the DL…

On paper, Mitchell has a 3 and a half  pitch arsenal, the 4 seamer, the cutter, a show me change up and his biggest  weapon last night the curve ball

“I definitely feel good about that. It was the plan early on because when I get that going it’s usually one of my better games,” Mitchell said of his curveball. “It helps my fastball. I was just throwing as hard as I could, throwing every pitch with conviction.”

Pitch Statistics as coded by the Automatic MLBAM Gameday Algorithm
Pitch Type Velo (Max) H-Break V-Break Count Strikes / % Swings / % Whiffs / % BIP (No Out) SNIPs / % LWTS
FF (Four-seam Fastball) 95.3 (97.3) -7.61 9.04 44 24 / 54.5% 14 / 31.8% 0 / 0.0% 7 (0) 17 / 45.9% -1.81

Mitchell  secured 21 outs with 94 pitches by inducing soft contact, the wind helped out on a few that  would have gone out too.. He walked more batters then he struck out, and he only got 2 swings and misses, the anti Pineda

Mitchell’s first jam came in the 5th, where it took him 17 pitches to  work out of a 3 walk jam.. Help  came in the form of Sanchez nabbing Ramirez on a caught stealing and Benintendi  and Leon putting up  2 soft AB’s…A very fulfilling inning watching Mitchell grind it out

Mitchell was allowed to clean up his own mess in the 7th inning, but it wasn’t because Psycho Joe has finally started to let his  starters  work out of jams, especially this late in a game…

No, the alternatives in P-Joe’s pen were less then desirable and no doubt Boston mused, “ah we love the smell of gidrools in the 7th  inning”

A lead off single, two loud fly ball outs, and a walk threatened the 0-0 score.. Thankfully Benintendi once again helped Mitchell  get off the ropes when he trickled a 2 out ground ball  to first  to  end the drama…

It’s great knowing  Mitchell will now  head into  the off season feeling good about his progress.. Unfortunately Boston now had it’s grubby hands wrapped around the Bombers neck

It didn’t take long for Castro to  blow a 4-3 ground out and Warren to give up  a rocket double in the gap  to  the Midget in the 8th inning.

Boston was set up  2nd and 3rd no outs.

Warren relieved Mitchell. 0 0
León safe at first on error by second baseman Castro. 0 0
Hernández ran for León. 0 0
Pedroia hit a ground rule double to deep right, Hernández to third. 0 0
Bogaerts lined out to third. 0 0
Ortiz intentionally walked. 0 0
Betts doubled to left, Hernández and Pedroia scored, Ortiz to third. 2 0
H. Ramírez intentionally walked. 2 0
Layne relieved Warren. 2 0
Ortiz scored, Betts to third, H. Ramírez to second on passed ball by Sánchez. 3 0
Bradley Jr. flied out to center. 3 0
Hill hit for Holt. 3 0
Hill intentionally walked. 3 0
Benintendi flied out to left. 3 0

Ugly shit  turned to  gold in the bottom of the 9th, but a tip  of the cap  to Holder and Pazos for keeping Boston off the board in the 8th inning.. In the process Grand Papi  is now 0-9 in this series

Kimbrel relieved Uehara. 3 0
Gardner singled to center. 3 0
Gardner to second on fielder’s indifference. 3 0
Ellsbury walked. 3 0
Gardner to third, Ellsbury to second on wild pitch by Kimbrel. 3 0
Sánchez walked. 3 0
Torreyes ran for Sánchez. 3 0
McCann walked, Gardner scored, Ellsbury to third, Torreyes to second. 3 1
Kelly relieved Kimbrel. 3 1
Young Jr. ran for McCann. 3 1
Castro struck out looking. 3 1
Gregorius fouled out to shortstop. 3 1
Teixeira homered to right center (409 feet), Ellsbury, Torreyes and Young Jr. scored. 3 5

Boston shut down Pomeranz so  the Yanks will  face Owens the lefty junk baller.. Owens has control issues, if the Yanks grind on him it might help

the Whole 9
