A Real Babe

A Real Babe?

Joel Sherman is already looking ahead to what  the  2017 Free Agent class will look like when it’s rumored Japanese SuperStar 22 yr old  Shohei Ohtani will be available to MLB teams.. If Ohtani continues to  build on his already impressive Japanese career, Sherman’s source is predicting a $300M contract

Like Tanaka, It’ll cost MLB team’s $20M just to talk to the kid, who  is

6’4”..

Began pitching professionally when he was 18, this past season went 10-4 with a 1.86 ERA, 11.2 strikeouts per nine innings

Hit 22 homers with a 1.004 OPS in 382 plate appearances.

Does not turn 23 until July.

With Tanaka potentially opting out, or even if he stays, Ohtani could be the big splash Free Agent pitcher after 2017..

For Luxury Tax purposes,  with an AAV of A-Rod $27.5M and Sabathia $24.4M definitely coming off the books, and potentially Tanaka’s $23M, the Yanks will have $75M melting away from their payroll……

There are some impressive videos in the Sherman link.. One disclaimer, he wouldn’t be able to  hit full  time in the AL, but is it possible we’d have our first starting pitcher batting clean-up  since The Babe ?

It’s high school all over…

GM Meetings

We missed the opening of MLB’s GM meetings which kicked off in Scottsdale Arizona on Monday October 7th..

This little romp  through the desert in November is a dalliance compared to  the December  Winter Meetings when  deals usually come to life, and the non-stop  rumors are finally laid to rest

At the Moment

Monday, October 7 marks the deadline for teams to extend qualifying offers to their free agents.

This year, that figure is up to $17.2 million, a significant raise from $15.8 million in 2015. While the system itself has been under attack as unfair to players, who complain that attaching a compensatory pick hurts them in free agency, it’s a tempting one-year option for some. Last year was the first time a player went that route, and three of them did — Matt Wieters, Colby Rasmus and Brett Anderson.

So  that pretty much  sets the stage for Free Agents to be, unless a player was traded mid season, then a Qualifying Offer can not be issued..

So it makes sense the very first FA  target for  CashMan is Aroldis Chapman, who is absolved of a first  round draft pick..We’ll  soon find out if Chappy’s affection  for the Bronx translates to  a hometown  discount, or will he want a  5 year romance worth  in excess of $85M?

CashMan certainly isn’t playing hard to  get Re: his affection  for Chappy, but until the new CBA Luxury Tax list is set, hopefully by December 1st, good chance nothing gets done.. Then again, if CashMan pounces early, he could possibly eliminate an all out bidding war for the Cuban Missile?

Kenley Jansen, Mark Melancon, a rehabbing Greg Holland, and Boston’s  Brad Ziegler are also  available…. Jansen would not only cost big bucks, you’d be giving up a 1st round draft pick, so  that’s not happening in NY, unless Chapman finds a different home

Qualifying Offers @ $17.2M

A player will have one week to survey the market and determine whether he wishes to accept the QO or reject in search of a more lucrative free-agent deal. If a player accepts the offer —  that player is considered signed for the following season at $17.2MM. The contract is considered a free-agent deal, and as such, that player is not allowed to be traded without his consent until June 15.

The Shopping of Bubba McCann

hasn’t exactly been hidden in plain sight,  in fact there is  a flashing neon For Sale sign attached to  the 33 yr old catcher..

Despite McCann being an insurance policy for Sanchez, and a potential 20 plus HR threat from the left side, the remaining 2 yr, $34M on his contract isn’t the type of value our budget conscious Bomber front office will have a blithe disregard for..

McCann  will be a full time DH, part time back up  to Sanchez, so the ultimate sting for CashMan is to  flip  the remaining $34M and bring back a prospect or cost controlled player that can carve out a spot on the 25 man roster

    Day 3 at the Meetings

Cash ran into Cespedes’ agent, no smoke on this one

The Braves not hot for McCann, another words you eat the money we might strike up our love affair again

Andujar is getting a lot of interest, so that’s a bona fide prospect piece in a starting pitcher trade, not Sale, that would cost Sanchez but maybe something else that’s very good..

Or not, I’d love to have a home grown 3rd baseman, but his D is suspect and CashMn hates that

    • Hey Donny, teams only want McCann if you give him to them, that in itself dictates what an erroneous deal that is
