Houston, We Have A Problem

with 9 comments

Mikey 2 Chins has the up-date on McCann and the Astros rumor..

I wouldn’t get too  excited over his report, although Mikey does a good job of heavy lifting the options.. Biggest  asset in regards to  time, Two Chins scanned the Astros prospect list  and pasted the intel on 5 pitchers.. Unfortunately, but understandably none of them on the MLB Astros top  30 prospect list

Axisa does toss in the Astros #5 prospect Joe Musgrove, who is at  Triple A and listed as the closest Astros pitching prospect to contributing in 2017..

Current Level: AAA
ETA: 2016
DOB: 12/04/92

Musgrove was originally drafted by the Blue Jays in the 1st round of the 2011 draft. He was acquired by the Astros in the 10 player deal with Toronto in 2012. It took Musgrove a little while to breakout but he did in a big way in 2015. Musgrove throws a mid 90s fastball and mixes a slider, changeup which are both very effective pitches. He has phenomenal control, evident by him only walking 8 batters in 100.2 innings last season. He ended 2015 with a 12-1 record, 1.88 ERA, 8 BB/99 K in 100.2 innings. He was also added to the 40 man roster this off-season. He started 2016 in AA and after dominating over 26.1 innings was promoted to AAA. He is probably the closest pitching prospect that is ready to contribute to the Astros. – JP

2016 Stats: 5-4, 2.98 ERA, 66.1 IP, 62 H, 22 ER, 9 BB, 65 K, 7.2 K/BB

Axisa explains the ‘Stros will lose Jason Castro  to Free Agency so  there is a need.. CashMan is playing hard to  get on McCann, plus per reports McCann has already  nixed a few trade scenarios by exercising his no trade option

The DonB has been warming up  the Big Black Car for McCann’s Tessio ride since the first HR Sanchez hit in August, but the Yanks are in no  hurry to

1) eat  a portion of his 2 yr $34M contract

2) With  less reps behind the plate, McCann’s body could rebound to  the point where he’s an  excellent LHB either at DH, or back-up catcher

3) I’m sorry, but until Sanchez proves the last two months of 2016 wasn’t  a fluke, the Yanks can  afford to hold onto McCann as and expensive  insurance policy…

I just can’t get the sour taste of Severino crashing as a starter out of my mouth.. After multiple adjustments, the league has a funny way of showing young players, it ain’t that  easy..

So if you’re green around the gills at McCann donning the Pinstripes, and prefer him collecting his mail from another zip code, be patient… At least until  a team offers up the type of prospect that has considerable upside.. At that point it would behoove Hal  to go  to his strength, MONEY, and eat some of McCann’s contact

    2. I think the Yankees will trade Brian McCann. Brian Cashman has said if the club does not get what it wants in return, they will hold him. But there just seems too much momentum to move him, and McCann would waive his no-trade clause for Atlanta and probably Houston and maybe Washington – though when it comes to the Braves, might he give pause about catching Dickey’s knuckleball?

McCann is owed $34 million through 2018, and the Yankees probably will have to eat money to facilitate a deal. But they seem comfortable bringing in a different DH such as Kendrys Morales or Mike Napoli, or maybe even having a reunion with Carlos Beltran.

  5. Kaprelian is turning out to be Ian Kennedy with a sore arm, let’s hope he’s just getting the rust off after surgery… looks like he gets K’s but he also gives up a lot of hits..

Torres and Bird pick up 5 hits in 8 AB’s, all singles but Kaprelian gets mugged once again

    4.1 innings, 3 hits, 5 runs all earned, 2 BB’s, 5 K’s, 1 HR, 5.16 ERA
