Yankee Hot Stove

Major League Baseball’s players and owners worked late into the night on Tuesday to try to reach a new Collective Bargaining Agreement, as a 12:01 a.m. ET Thursday deadline — which marks the expiration of the current CBA — loomed.

Both sides said they were optimistic a deal could be reached even though several significant issues remain unresolved.
Among them:

• Luxury-tax threshold
• Draft-pick compensation tied to the signing of free agents
• A proposed international draft
• Roster sizes and days off
• Changes in the Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program
• Pace-of-play initiatives

The one thing I saw that could impact any team going over the Luxury Tax, besides the monetary cost is the loss of a draft pick.. In this new MLB world, where the premium is on Youth, that’s like cutting off your air supply

Following Olney’s report that the competitive balance tax is the “last big hurdle” to be cleared, Rosenthal reports (Twitter links) that the owners have proposed forfeiting draft picks as the penalty for going over the luxury tax limit, though the MLBPA is sensitive “sensitive to any adjustment that would cause [the] threshold to act as [a] de facto salary cap.” MLB Network’s Jon Morosi tweets that there’s some growing optimism about a deal being reached before the 12:01am ET deadline on Thursday.

The YES Network  had their first  Hot Stove

last night, at least I think it’s the first one, we’re just  getting back to  the baseball office

It’s no surprise Hal  will  point the Yankee Clipper toward a rebuild direction, and for the most part, stay out of any high end  Free Agent bidding, with the exception being a Closer,

(Chapman) and best case scenario a one year  deal  for Carlos Beltran..

From what I heard from the panel, they broke down the McCann  trade.. Yanks could have used him had they been a playoff team, but it’s better to open a DH spot, and shed the $22M over 2 yr’s..

1)…It’s now time to use 2017 as an audition year for the high end farm system.. It’s imperative the Yanks start  to  build their future core, and 2017 will possibly separate who  stays and who  gets traded for useable components ..

2)… Shedding as much payroll as possible in an effort to get payroll flexibility for 2018 / 19..

Any  veteran player(s) who  could bring back a decent prospect, or assist in peeling off some payroll by getting traded is probably on  Cashman’s negotiating table

Headley and Gardner with  2 yr’s left will be prime targets  over the next 2 to  3 months.. Both players will  also be candidates for a July deadline trade, which might be more of a reality

Clint Frazier possibly needs more AAA reps, and Gleyber Torres is still only 19 years old.. My guess a dream infield would look like Machado  at 3rd base, D-Gregorius at SS, Torres at 2nd base, and Bird / Austin sharing first, with Austin also  a 4th OFer

More likely Headley stays put and the only change we see in 2017 is Bird / Austin, with Andujar, Torres, and Frazier coming fast, or traded..

For the most part this has been a direction we all  saw coming, Joel Sherman brought the concept to life with his article from a few days ago

Bullet Points from Hal

What Hal said: “There’s going to be competition in the starting rotation. We know that. We’ve got (Adam) Warren. We’ve got (Chad) Green, (Luis) Cessa, (Luis) Severino, (Bryan) Mitchell. We’ve got good options for two spots, right? That’s going to be fun to watch.”

It’s hard to imagine the Yanks emptying the farm  system for Chris Sale or Chris Archer.. There is a possibility Rich Hill  falls in their hands on a 2 or 3 yr deal..

If he stays healthy and pitches well, he’s veteran presence in the rotation, plus he could be traded at  the deadline to  a contender for more prospects

It’s imperative we see Mitchell, Severino, Adams,  Cessa possibly Kaprelian, and Green in the rotation behind Tanaka, Pineda, and CC Sabathia, so Hill  would be blocking a young pitcher

Unless CashMan has trade plans for one of the aforementioned.

What Hal said: He said he believes in Dellin Betances as a capable closer, but “that doesn’t mean we’re not going to strengthen the bullpen in one way or the other. We’ll see where he fits in, where he best ends up. We’re just starting that whole process.”

Signing Chapman could possibly make the bull pen the Yanks Marquee, similar to  2016… Nobody will  replace Miller, but Betances and Chapman are two  good back end gate keepers, Clippard and Warren  decent 6th / 7th inning men..

Yanks need a LHP out of the pen, Brett Cecil at $31M was too  expensive, rumor had Cashman looking into Boone Logan

What Hal said: “My expectations are that he’s going to be my starting right fielder next year.”

Judge will see more rope then a cafe tying contest, right field will be his to loose.. Ellsbury Gardner, Hicks and Austin most likely will be the out field crew

The hope here is Ellsbury is brokered off to some team  with  the Yanks eating at least $25 to $30M of the 4 yr $89M left on his insidious deal…

Making Ellsbury a $15M a yr player might interest  somebody, and it’ll

1) Possibly bring back a prospect

2) knock at least $60 of the $89M off the books

3) It allows Gardner to move to CF for only $13M per, and opens LF for Austin, Frazier or any prospect  to  potentially starts to  take off on the farm

  1. Winning, in fact, often falls a distant second to making and saving money. The pursuit of the World Series is the summer game. That game is over, giving way to the winter game: owners vs. players battling over money and control.

    Good stuff from Howard Bryant

  2. “I’ll let him prove me wrong,’’ Cashman said, “but I can’t imagine 2017 is a possibility for him.”

  3. Beltran NFW

    • Donny Beltran will be in big demand as a DH, no team wants him for more then 1 yr, and If I’m Beltran I go to Houston Canada or Boston they have a chance to win a ring…

Maybe he wants to be close to his family in NY and if Hal money whips him $18M for 1 yr he might come back to NY.. He’s the perfect bridge to an open DH slot in 2018, he’s a coach on the field, and it wouldn’t hurt having him in the clubhouse with all these kids looking for guidance

CashMan would be lucky to get him on a 1 yr deal, in fact he probably won’t…

I do like that teams think Cash is in on Encarnacion it will drive up his cost for Toronto or Boston who seem to be out on Encarnacion

  4. Sally Boy! It’s good to have you back in the land of Coca Cola!
I’ve been checking the schedule for days to see when Al Yankzeera was starting their Hot Stove sessions. I guess I missed it, duh!
We’ve talked about this before, & I’m totally on board. Let’s get Brett The Face & Headless outta here for all the reasons stated in this back to business column.
Yes, Hal has eaten quite a meal already with Arod $, but dinner time isn’t over. The Mall On Rivera Avenue prints money all year long. So, we don’t have to cry for them. This will hurt, but there’s a tremendous upside to this addition by subtraction move in deposing Gardy & Headless. Or, as Sal said, just Headless. This will open avenues for others.
    Let the games begin.
