Yanks Sign Chappy

On Wednesday night the Steinbrenner children  did their father proud, they finally dropped all  this nickel and dime stuff and will pick up the tab on the most expensive  Closer / Reliever contract in the history of MLB

As expected, Aroldis Shotgun Chapman got the gig, he’ll be closing baseball games for  the Steinbrenner children over the next 5 yr’s @ $17.2M per=$86M..

Chappy can opt out after the third year, about the time he starts to lose velocity, so  he’ll be about as appealing as a Motel  6 bed bug…Good luck with  that Hal

A few schools of thought on the Chappy deal..

Bob  Klapisch has been campaigning for Chapman this off season, being a semi-pro pitcher, Klap really appreciates the freakishness in velocity and just pure athleticism that  sets the Cuban Missile apart from everybody else..

Overall in 2016, Chapman posted a 1.55 ERA with 90 strikeouts and 18 walks in 59 games

Personally we’d prefer a Zack Britton type weapon, he doesn’t need triple digits to  devour his prey, he can do it with  a hard fast ball and two  extreme worm killers, his sinker, and curve.. You’re either swinging and missing, or rolling  ground balls into  a shift..

If you  gave the Orioles a 4 or 5 prospect haul, they’d hand you over Mr Britton, on that note Klap is happy with Chappy

In Chapman, the Yankees get the game’s hardest-throwing, most dominant closer who’ll be one of the centerpieces when the current rebuild starts bearing fruit in 2018. At least that’s the plan. If and when the Bombers are ready to stare down Chris Sale and the Red Sox, they’ll need someone more dependable than Dellin Betances to lock down the ninth inning.

So Klapsich is not a Betances fan Re: shutting down the last 3 outs.. He’s not buying Girardi  ran the kid into  the ground, his take is Betances choked

Betances, with a blazing fastball of his own, nevertheless failed in his two-month audition as Chapman’s successor last summer. His ERA soared close to 5.00 in September, he had trouble fielding the ball and throwing to first base and, most damningly, was unable to contain any of the 21 base runners who attempted to steal second. All 21 made it successfully.

All  true Betances is a nightmare with men on base..

Klapsich  also bought up Chapman’s affection  for  the Bronx, after all  they gave him a chance when nobody else would.. The fact Chapman broke Melancon’s $62M record breaking contract by $24M, might of had something to  do  with Chappy liking NY so much

Rumor had it Miami  was lock step  with the Yanks, and good chance the Dodgers and Nats made sure the price tag stayed above the $85M mark..

Klapisch’s final  words

If the Yankees have calibrated their prospects correctly a  renaissance is just around the corner. They Bombers will be young and talented, and nothing boosts the morale of a team on the rise more than the assurance of a clean ninth inning. Blown saves are a cancer for any club, but especially for those experiencing their first pennant race.

That’s why the Yankees made the right move signing Chapman. His deal is lavish, true, but the dividend is coming. I don’t think the Bombers will regret this investment.

So One Vote for Chapman

On the other side of the coin, Andrew Marchand  thinks paying out $86M for a closer on a non contending / rebuilding team is the height of stupidity….

Marchand is in the Keith Law school here, it’s blasphemy to  pay closers  number 3 starter money.. The back  end of the contract will  come back to  bite the salary structure, and this $17.2M will  block the Yanks acquiring a more important starting pitcher…

In 2017 and 2018, it might work well enough, as the Yankees genuflect to the “Golden State Warriors of baseball” and pursue a wild card. But that comes at too much of a long-term cost.

Signing Chapman for five years and $86 million is an “all-in” move. The Yankees, however, are an in-between team.

All  fair points

The reason we like the move, it gives Cashman 3 plus assets in 2017, and that’s a good start in gathering at least  6 to protect a shaky rotation. Chapman  basically pre signed a Qualifying Offer  for 3 years, and who knows he may opt out, or  the  official QO might exceed the present $17.2M  as the contract plays out it’s entirety (5 yr’s)

Buying into  the Bombers plan, means you’ve also  committed to rebuild with  youth, stock pile prospects, who are more valuable then cash in this market, their value is based on a projected ceiling..

The White Sox just  traded the best pitcher in the AL and a  good center fielder with 5 yr’s of team  control for 7 top  rated prospects.. The Yanks brought back  11 prospects trading Chapman, Miller and Beltran.. One of them at  19 years old just  won the AFL MVP

And finally  we’re rooting for   a team  that  expects to win at least  85 games in a rebuild year! If they get any breaks along the way, they  could possibly sneak into  a WC Game with  88  wins..

Not to mention, the most fun is watching the core building process, and having that team bust some balls, and be spoilers to  the Chalk Elite

If teams like Boston  fall  asleep and are losing with  12 outs to  go, hopefully Cashman  has a 6 weapon, 1 mop, bull pen ready to put them to sleep

So  far the Yanks have committed to  building from the back to  the front and have invested $29.8M in their pen with at least one or two more mid priced pieces possibly coming to  the Bronx

Chapman… $17.5M

Clippard …$4.25M
acquired by NY Yankees in trade from Arizona 7/31/16 with $5,561,475 remaining on contract

Dellin Betances… (3.078) – $3.4MM

Adam Warren… (4.036) – $2.3MM

Tommy Layne… (2.144) – $1.2MM

    • Donny the knock is He blew three leads in the WS
But that had to do with Maddon abusing him knowing they would never sign him

Epstein will continue to get cute and find a weapon with 1 yr left like he did with Davis, or he’ll rent for 2 months like he did with Chappy
He’s to hip to spend $86m on. 1
      inning hero

But you notice who the Indians and Cubs ran to for big time weapons
Epstein like Boston will run out of prospects to trade off soon
So no more cute deals soon

  4. lol George King says the Yanks spent $99M and didn’t get any closer to the Red Sox in fact they took a step back

Georgie, the Big Dombrowski had a squad handed to him that is 3 to 4 yr’s ahead of the Yanks, he just finished off emptying the farm system getting a shut down 8 th inning guy and the best pitcher in the AL

The Red Sox have a finished product, no more trades for iconic players now that Devers and Groome a kid are the only 2 prospects with value left… They’re not getting help from the minors this yr, not impact help that is.. over the last 3 years they’ve brought up Bogaerts, Shaw, Betts, Bradley, Swihart and Benintendi

all impact youngsters, that ain’t happening this yr so when they run into injuries, now what?

And the Yanks grossly over paid for Chapman thanks to Miami, but you know what no Holliday no Chapman your covering a 76 win team..

Nobody got close to the Red Sox it’s them and the Cubs, then everybody else, get over it
