The 2017 Arbies

The Yanks have just  about settled all  family business RE: Arbitration settlements… Betances was the only player still not settled…

The Yankees and Didi Gregorius agreed to a $5.1MM salary

The 2016 season was Gregorius’ best at the big league level, as he hit .276/.304/.447 with a career-high 20 homers. He lands a nice raise over last year’s $2.425MM salary and can be controlled through 2019 via arbitration.

One Thought:  Sell high for young pitching… Torres is coming, 2018, along with Mateo and Andujar, and maybe Machado by 2019…Unless we think Torres who  will play the 2017 season as a 20 yr old (Dec 13, 1996) still needs 2 yr’s working through the system?

Torres — rated the Yankees’ No. 2 prospect and the Majors’ No. 17 prospect by — will begin the year at Double-A Trenton and, coming off his AFL performance, he’s clearly on a fast track to the Majors. They’re not going to rush him, but I could see a scenario where the Yankees field a lineup with Gregorius and Torres up the middle in the near future, with Castro shifting to third base.

Torres would have to  just  blow through  Double and Triple A (see Andrew Benintendi 21 yr’s old college player)  then arrive in the Bronx as a 21 yr old SS ( Lindor, Bogarts, Correa was 20)  or

There’s a scenario where the 2019 Yankees could have Manny Machado at the hot corner, joining Bird at first base, Torres at second and Gregorius in his final year before free agency at short. It’ll also be fun to see if Jorge Mateo can fit into the mix, now that he’s experimenting with second base as well as center field.

The key  words here are “Gregorius in his final year before free agency”..

A good guess would be the Yanks in their indelible style, will ride with the team  controlled Gregorius at SS, maybe even  extend him if he continues to improve.. Safe bet D-Gregorius will be around  at least until the 2020  season..

Bogaerts and Betts are in line for hefty extensions, a Bogaerts deal  will  definitely set the SS market, and Boston more so  then Cleveland (Lindor) or Houston (Correa) will have the ability to  raise the bar

Case in point handing over arguably the #1 MLB Prospect, Moncada and their best pitching prospect Kopech for Sale, sent the Quintana / Archer  market through  the roof, as did the Adam Eaton  deal  with DC..

Other Arbitration Settlements

Betances filed for $5M and the Yankees countered with $3M, according to Heyman. That’s a pretty significant gap. They might end up going to a hearing was one thought, but I bet they  settle somewhere in between . A hearing would get ugly, I mean D-Bet can’t hold runners on base and he can’t field his position worth a damn, two  big negatives for the analytics department…

Betances can  counter with most MLB polls ranking him at least a top 4 reliever in baseball, then track down  what  the 3 ahead of him are being paid…

  1. Hello boys,
I’m getting ready to leave beautiful Jamaica after a week of Little Feat & Co. Been off the grid for the most part. Had a blast & spent the week well medicated.
There were about 4 candidates I coulda hooked up with, but after my pre-trip ménage a trois with my 2 Latina Lovelies from Baltimore…..they all seemed like a letdown….

Sal, great read on the future of the Yankee infield. I love that scenario with Machado ending up at third! With Torres coming, it’s a tough call on Didi. If he keeps improving, I agree, put Torres at 2nd & move Castro to third until we can get Machado? Tough call….and maybe Mateo forces himself into the mix.
    Good problems to have.
