Betances Ready To Rumble

with 5 comments

Brian Cashman is apparently  cocksure the Yanks and Dellin Betances  are going to  an arbitration hearing..

Betances is seeking $5M while the team countered with $3M. The two sides will make their arguments and the three-person panel will pick either the $5M or $3M, nothing in-between.

The one  wrinkle I wasn’t aware of is both parties discussed an  extension, it’s not clear who  initiated the dialogue, or who declined.

This looks to be a pretty good rumble,  when  the bell  rings it’ll be Betances who has the numbers, and All Star appearances to prove he’s a step  above the generic set up man market value..

Cashman will counter punch with a history of similar first  time arbitration cases that   have already established the market place..

“Based on all of our discussions, it was clear our different perspectives were at such a wide bridge, that we’ll go out and basically have a polite discussion about market value and history of where the marketplace sits versus attempts for a new market creation.”

The arbitrator panel could decide, the Save stat, a barometer that increases a relievers value on the open market, is about as useful as a Win Loss stat on a starting pitchers record and sway  toward Betances

The closer position is a big deal, no doubt, but Tito Francona unleashing Andrew Miller in non  closing high leverage situations has changed the middle / set up  reliever’s value

Betances’ biggest  asset is his ability to  pitch  multiple innings, in fact he’s at the top of  MLB’s Reliever Weapon class, a roster spot made extremely trendy by the KC Royals who featured Herrera, Davis and Holland in 2014

This Arbitration battle is a toss up..

Mikey 2 Chins does the heavy lifting on what  type of extension, if any the Yanks should present Betances..

A three-year deal worth $22.5M — that’s assuming $4M in 2017, $7.5M in 2018, and $11M in 2019 — could be more budget friendly than going through arbitration three times.

M2C is leery of buying out Betances’ 3 yr’s of arbitration, based on past health issues, and his erratic command…

I’d have to add his inability to hold runners on first base, 21 for 21 runners stole 2nd base .. And the most egregious, he can’t field his position…

Betances is not all that young by baseball standards anymore — he turns 29 in March — though as his upcoming arbitration hearing suggests, he’s about to get pretty expensive. Even if the Yankees win the hearing and Betances makes $3M in 2017, that’s still a record salary for a non-closing reliever going through arbitration the first time. Dellin will help establish a new salary standard for relievers, specifically top setup men.

That  said when Betances is right, and when Girardi  isn’t over using him, he’s an indestructible weapon out of the pen

Thinking what Betances does on the baseball field is too expensive, is a market trend GM’s would love to remain status quo.. Unfortunately for the MLB accountants, starting pitching’s inability to secure 21 outs  a game has created a reliever market niche for pitchers like Dellin Betances

Betances and the MLBPA can set a new market with a win

  1. It’s going to be a tough hearing for both sides. Both have valid points. So, why not just split the difference & call it a day. Then we don’t have to go to the mattresses for an all out war.
    Everybody goes home happy.

    • hey bondsie, they need you as the arbitrator.. this might end quick, if the 3 arbitrators are old school the Yanks win, if they’re new school Betances takes home the $5M and the MLBPA has a new bench mark

a ,million bucks is a lot of money, 2 million is twice as much, should be a fun fight lets get it on …

  2. I had a much better feeling about DB when Andrew Miller guarded his gunside, not sure if he has the heart of a Mariano

    • Donny I think he has the heart, he just doesn’t have the ability to repeat his delivery like Mo, so he doesn’t have the same command of his pitches.. And he’s no Mo between the ears… copy that

His size also makes it difficult for him to Not be that graceful on defense.. We have to remember the MLBPA really wants him to win it’ll set yet a new market for relievers of his ilk

  3. Betances has Chapman to guard his gunside, what Cashman needs to do is stack that pen with good options so Psycho Joe doesn’t kill Betances and Chapman with multiple inning stints

I know they need to develop starters but some of these kids that don’t make the rotation should stay on the varsity and work as reliever weapons / spot 3 inning starters

Possibly Mitchell and Severino both 2 pitch pitchers should work out of the pen if they can’t crack the rotation

Chappy, Betances, Clippard, Warren Severino, Mitchell, LHP… With Cessa, Green, Adams, Enns, and Montgomery the rotating depth

Cashman should also grab a veteran starter as the rosters start to formulate

Actually the best case scenario is Tanaka, Pineda, Sabathia, Severino, Mitchell as the rotation.. With Tanaka opting out, and Pineda and Sabathia free agents they better hope at least 2 or 3 kids can hold down starting slots in 2018
