Welcome To Spring Training

with 11 comments

We completely missed yesterday  due to no  electric on the mountain from 10:45 Monday morning until about 4 PM yesterday (Tuesday), when it stayed on for good, hopefully no more power lines need to be tapped into  or we could go dark  again, yes the wind and ice made the mountain a mess

Spring Training has begun. Pitchers and catchers reported to Tampa yesterday — the position players are due to arrive Saturday — and much  to  the DonB’s chagrin  Joe Girardi held his annual start-of-spring press conference yesterday morning.

We also grabbed Bryl-Creem Curry on with Michael Kay, we haven’t listened to  this yet,  but if you want to hear a prepared in front of the bedroom mirror press conference both the Girardi  and Curry spots are for you…

Mikey 2 Chins has all of the Girardi Valentines Day I love you messages right here

M2C’s  take

As expected, Girardi all but confirmed Masahiro Tanaka will be the Opening Day starter. That was the only real news from the press conference. Otherwise it was the usual.

Actually with only Pineda and Sabathia as the hold over starting pitchers, who else would be an opening day  starter? So basically there wasn’t any  new news on Spring Training’s ceremonial Day 1..

Quick Bullet Points

Betances will not be in camp until his arbitration hearing is completed on Friday.. Mike Francesa can’t understand what  the big deal is, between $3M or $5M… Obviously Mikey has been mailing in his shows hoping Guitar Jimmy Dolan’s goon’s bum rushing Charles Oakley would carry his pathetic show until something he can sink his teeth into baseball wise occurred

Francesa as predicted has been shilling for Dolan since the incident rocked the Garden a few days ago, now poor Mikey has to back pedal after Dolan was forced to lift the ban, and shortly will have to make a public apology to Oak..

As for Betances, he’s not taking any chances in camp until his contract dispute is over with.. The scary part for Betances, Francesa predicts he will  win the Arbitration  case, which  will set a new  pay scale bar for set up  relievers.. Of course pitchers would have to match  a lot of Betances’s numbers, but at least D-Bet is blazing the trail, if he wins

He certainly deserves the $5M, but past market trends show he may lose..

Luis Severino was an absolute monster pitching out of the bull pen, but the Yanks, and Severino of course want him pitching every 5 days as a starter.. Obviously Severino  stands to make a lot more money as a starter, so  his choice is easy..

The Yanks have Tanaka opting out, and Pineda and Sabathia are in their walk  year, so of course they want Severino to crack the rotation as a 23 yr old, making minimum wage

CC Sabathia is perfectly healthy following his minor offseason knee surgery. It was a routine cleanup procedure that was scheduled well in advance. Sabathia reiterated he intends to continue pitching beyond this season as long as he’s healthy. “If I’m healthy, I’m going to play as long as I can,” he said. [Meredith Marakovits, Curry]

Last year  somebody would have put us in a straight jacket had we even thought Sabathia could be in Stripes in 2018, but I can  see Cashman giving him a 1 year deal , team  friendly of course, and Sabathia remaining with the Bombers win 2018?

The Yanks are in a crazy crazy spot of having NO veteran starting pitchers under contract after 2017, once Tanaka opts out.. If Tanaka doesn’t opt out, it means he had a terrible season, possibly even  an injury torn one at  that

M2C has an in depth  report on Tanaka, Pineda and Sabathia

  3. on paper the Yanks have a lot of RHB but this intel shows Holliday, Carter and Castro are above league average in going the opposite way, which means targeting that RF porch

  4. Any truth to the rumour that Brickhouse will be making an appearance in the SI swimsuit issue due to come out???
I’d be interested in seeing how a bikini top can hold those cannonballs up!
Just focusing on all baseball related things…

  6. I saw the conference,GeniusJoe looked like he was having a prostate exam talking to the media. The headline in the post was that this is like 1996- I don’t think so. That team had good starting pitching, which is the achilles heel of this team. Just like last year, when your best pitchers are in the back end of the bullpen, you got a big problem. You never know what you will get from Nibbles Tanaka, has he had enough rest, etc Pinheada is even worse, even more unpredicable, then CC who has gone from battling for the #5 spot to #2 or 3. The rest of the rotation is oy vey. Meanwhile,Betances has not reported to camp and is waiting for his arbitration hearing. I said a couple of days ago,the Yanks NEVER go to arbitration, they always settle so its very strange they are treating Betances this way. He may not have a long future with the team. The binder says optimism abounds,we can all hope he right and the youngsters develop as we hope. Strangely Brickhouse was not at the televised conference, just the hideous Chris Shearn. I don’t think they make bikinis in her size-if anyone can find a photo of her in one, please post it!!!

    • looked like he was having a prostate exam

      hahahaha…

We’ll have to keep an eye on that Betances / front office tussle Big D… I keep thinking possibly Betances could be gone, especially if they can find a few kids, he’ll be 31 when he’s a Free Agent, and by that time, two more arbitrations increasing his pay, they might not want to pay that freight?

I wonder what their extension offer was it didn’t seem to interest Betances?

Betances would bring back a hell of a prospect haul if he goes back to lighting it up, he’ll be 31 yr’s old when he’s a free agent.. that’s not crazy, Miller was 30 when the Yanks gave him 4 yr’s $36M, he’ll be 32 in May

      Betances 29 in March

Maybe they want to keep monitoring his deficiencies like fielding, throwing to bases and his inability to hold on runners which is lind of a big deal for a reliever in high leverage situations.. A walk a steal and a bloop hit and there’s a run…..

      OK so bra sizes, 32. 34 36 40 and BrickHouse !

      cannonballs hahahahahaha,

  7. M2C’s intel

Severino basically stopped using his changeup late last year. He averaged 12.2 changeups per start during his debut in 2015, then averaged 13.1 changeups per start in his first eight starts last season, before he hurt his triceps and was later sent down. Then, in his final four starts — this doesn’t count his time in the bullpen — Severino threw 12 changeups total. That won’t work. Not as a starter.

Now in December Larry the Stable Guy did an interview and mentioned it’s Severino’s fast ball command that fucked him up last yr

Rothschild: “Everyone talks about the need for him to develop a changeup, but the most important thing is he needs to command his fastball better. He can throw great pitches to the glove side down to righties, but it is not repeatable and in the majors mistakes show up. The changeup is an important pitch, but if he locates his fastball with his breaking ball, he will pitch well. My emphasis at the end of the year with him was locate your fastball better, repeat your delivery and make sure your breaking ball morphs back into a harder breaking ball.
