The Gleyber Torres Show

with 15 comments

The Yanks were in Clearwater Fla yesterday, to play  the Phils in a home and home type deal.. MLBtv had the game late, or if you have the MLB atbat app you  caught it in real time

The Phil’s in front  about 7 thousand  fans beat  the Bombers Travel Team 6-5, but more important, we have baseball back and the man on the street is very excited

“What a great sight to see baseball again! Watching the sun splashed field, you could almost feel the warmth & smell of the fresh cut grass (my favorite scent).
Had to watch the replay due to being in the office, & fell out doing so due to the midnight start. But the first thing I saw was Judge’s bomb. Wow! That was some poke!
I love watching the kids”.

If you like watching young prospects, that  can actually play, then Clearwater was the place to be.. The Phillies have nothing but young players, sans Howie Kendrick and Michael Saunders..

Their best player is 24 yr old 3rd base slugger Maikel  Franco who hit a monster HR off Dietrich Enns a good looking Bomber Triple A LHP who  tried to get cute with  a 2-2 lollipop curve ball  that Franco  crushed in the 4th inning for his first Tater of the Spring

Unfortunately there is no  video of the legit Bomb, only the freak inside the park HR Franco  was awarded that  got stuck under the left centerfield fence.

How do  you not have the cameras rolling when  your Star Player has an AB, and they  wonder why…..

The best we can  tell, the  Phils have two up and coming sluggers Rhys Hoskins  and Dylan Cozens, both  will advance to  AAA, but it won’t be long before they’re spending  varsity meal money.. Hoskins blasted a tape measure HR to  right center in the 6th

For the Good Guys

Yesterday’s travel  team  was a fun watch, I’d rather see Mateo working with  the first  group, but Torreyes is the incumbent utility guy coming North  so a no brainer..

Interesting call batting Romine 2nd as the Bombers continue to search for the illusive match up  with the two  hole.. They  are also encouraging certain players to work on and  retain multiple position skills..

Later in the game we saw Refsynder playing 1st base, Wade in CF, and Ji-Man Choi in LF..Cashman is, and has been  embracing the Swiss Army Knife utility player as a valuable position.. Thank You Ben Zobrist who at  the ripe old age of 34, earned himself a 4 yr $56M contract.. Now that’s incentive….

Baby Boomers

Miggy Andujar who  was great in game 1 contributed again in his first start with a single and run scored in two at-bats. He made a good defensive pick also

Clint Frazier, started in left and was 1-for-2 with a bloop single. Bird hasn’t gotten  a hit yet, but he looked pretty smooth on defense.. Judge hit a few hard line drives went 0-2, but Did Not Strike Out, that’s a win..

There is speculation Romine who is out of options will be pushed by   Kyle Higashioka, a 26 yr old prospect, with superior defensive skills and some pop..

21 homers in Double-A and Triple-A last season tied for the best among all Yankees minor leaguers

“Oh yeah,” Girardi said. “Here’s another kid that was drafted (in the seventh round in 2008) … Maybe he didn’t get to where he wanted to get to at a certain point he had envisioned — (he) went through an arm injury, came back — but he’s really put himself on the radar and he’s going to catch in the big leagues, too, at some point.”

Probably manager speak here, if Higgy beats out Romine, he gone.… The Bombers catching depth  takes a hit, especially if Sanchez gets hurt…Higgy will have to just  kill to  beat out Romine is one guess..

At the moment Sanchez, Romine and Higgy are the only 3 catchers on the 40 man.. That’s not to  say  a journeyman backstop  can’t be picked up and stashed at AAA.. Nice problem to have, a power hitting catcher with a high defensive IQ

Adam Warren was very efficient in his 2 innings, but he knows he’ll be buttering his bread out of the bull pen despite the fake rotation incentive

“I was talking to Larry [Rothschild, pitching coach] the other day and he said it could hurt you out of the bullpen and you are flexible,’’ Warren said. “Maybe I can go out there and pitch good enough to make them put me in the rotation. I do know [pen experience] is going to hurt me, but that is a good thing as well.’’

For me the most impressive outing was Ben Heller who looked like the whole package in his one inning striking out the side.. We have to  remind ourselves he was pitching to a non roster invitee, a back up  catcher, and a stud prospect heading to  AAA,  but the way  the ball  was moving, the velocity, the command, the ability to add and subtract, and his pace moved him to  the top of the pecking order for one of those 2 bull pen spots

Johnathan Holder another AAA hero, pitched  one inning and picked up  2 K’s

Pick of the Litter

The biggest  buzz of the afternoon for the Yanks was Gleyber Torres, who  at 20 years old, plays the game beyond his years.. Yesterday he was very impressive  scoring from  2nd base on a Wild Pitch, rifling  a double down the third base line, and a double to  RF off hot shot pitching prospect Mark Appel

Double A Trenton is gonna be one hell of a team…

    • I think it is they test a lot in the minors

Severino lost the strike zone trying to throw that change up still a 16 pitch inning 24 over 2

It’ll be good to see him later in ST
That’s if he doesn’t go to the WBC after the first round he’s an alternate
      Onbthe DR

      I’m rooting hard for Holliday

  5. Fred Singleton trying justify The DoughBoy
Also Fred, Gregorius is batting 5th because the Yanks have no other LHB
    not because he’s tinkering

Nice match up for Severino he’s not afraid to pound the zone with all prospects in this line up
Not one of their good hitters is here today

  6. Don’t get me wrong I love Kenny, but he said sluggers make the big money
which this yr that market trend dried up

GM’s are paying for top rotation guys, and players who have an all around game
Sluggers like Carter Encarnacion Bautista Trumbo all settled for less then they anticipated in FA

Tyler Clipboard makes twice what Patches makes
If The Yanks keep bashing they might make sluggers trendy again
    Castro hit a bomb

  7. Good job by Cannonball with the Cashman interview
    Excellent questions
she probably sent Cash the transcript
Make sure it was a Denny McLain Mickey Mantle moment

Cannonball must be in heaven with all these kids in camp
Moscone has a lot of competition

  8. Nah Sal, no competition for Bondzini,, he likes two at a time minimum,, you take ol Boopsie and no room for no other melons in his suite 🙂
I was worried we’d be stuck with Headley Lamar after he gloved 2 nices ones in the first but after his two ABs i feel better.
    Watta sucky hitter
Fun to watch it developing before our jaundiced eyes lol.

  10. Thanks for all the shout outs boys. Missed the game due to business in Woodstock.
I enjoy the competition for Cannonball’s affections . Would love to motorboat those yabos!! What they have on me in age is negated by experience . Based on that, I think Joey Claps would lean my way in making out the lineup.
    Hopefully, they replay it tonight!
