Boom Boom Estrada

Comedy Central

Is it just me, or has anybody else noticed Girardi has a comedy routine brewing ?

Joe the Comic had some fun bantering with the media over Frazier’s red hair, and he piggy backed that  performance with a quote regarding Greg Bird’s base running gaffe in yesterday’s game

“He has to adjust his reads a little bit,’’ Girardi said. “I told him if he hit triples he doesn’t have to make that read.’’

Without so many old geezer bastards to  juggle this year, maybe Girardi has grown a sense of humor.. After all, pretty soon he’ll be one of the highest paid dudes on the field…..

Yanks O’s

Not many better listens then Jim Palmer who was an  analyst for the Orioles in the Yankees 4-1 win over The Buck-O’s in front of almost 7 thousand fans  at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota, FL

Yesterday’s Hero

The Yanks and O’s were knotted at 1-1 starting  the 9th inning, Buck brought in hot shot AAA prospect Oliver Drake to face Frazier, Deglan, and Estrada… Jim Palmer was already contemplating what Buck and Joe the Comic would do when or if the game ended in a tie.

Buck could have been a ball buster and lobbied for another inning, delaying the Yanks bus trip back  to  Tampa, any chance to screw the NY Yankees is Showalter’s agenda..

Frazier started the 9th inning with  a hustle double off the end of the bat.. On Drake’s first pitch to Deglan, the Bomber’s first baseman  roped a single  to  right field putting men on 1st and 3rd with  no  outs..

On the 5th pitch  of Drake’s outing he grooved an 89 MPH fastball up in the zone, and 20 yr old High A 2nd and sometime 3rd baseman Thairo Estrada crushed it into  the left field wind for a monster 3 run Tater to  give the Yanks a 4-1 lead

Kyle Haynes pitched a 1-2-3 9th and the 60 mile trip  from Sarasota to Tampa might have been interrupted by a stop  at some local Dairy Queen as the good guys pulled it out late..

Stuff You Gotta Watch

Chad Green’s 2 innings, and Greg Bird’s misguided base running would have been the highlights of the Bombers third win in 4 tries this Spring had Thairo Estrada not met Ollie Drake

While Estrada’s Tater  was fun, Green’s outing was most likely the main focus.. Chad Green is the 5th Beatle in the Yanks 5 man rotation battle, and so  far the Fab Five have delivered..

Mitchell, Cessa, Warren, Severino, and Green have a combined 10 innings, 1 hit (Green) 2 BB’s (Green/Severino)  6 K’s, No Runs allowed

Green had a 10 pitch  first inning, inducing two  wind held Fly Ball outs, and a Machado  come backer for a  1-3 groundout.. His fast ball  was a consistent 93, not much if any movement on it..His slider went side to  side, not much depth, and his first  inning cutter didn’t have much  bite…

In the 2nd inning he walked Davis on 5 pitches, his slider hit 88, a 4 MPH differential  from his 92 MPH FB, still not much movement. His first  change up was 84 with decent movement, he induced a  6-4-3 DP on nice slider getting Trumbo  to  chase

He had a 1-2 count on Kim but an 88 MPH cutter didn’t bite enough and the O’s LF roped it to  RF for a single.. For some reason the lumbering Kim decided to  test Judge’s arm, and the big boy gunned him  down at  2nd base to  end the inning

Green’s line 2 innings, 1 hit, 1 BB, 23 pitches..

Green will be an interesting watch, he definitely pitches like a starter, with 4 different type offerings.. None of his pitches look like plus stuff at the moment, but he tries to not catch too much plate,  you can  see where HR’s could be a problem  for him, he’s not gonna get back  too many mistakes

We have to  wait until  these guys start to  turn line-ups over and pitch a few more innings before any of this makes sense…So  far the results have been good, but it’s gonna get a lot more challenging as we move forward..

Mateo was robbed of his first  hit on a nice play  by Jones

With no YES camera’s in the house we don’t have video  of Bird’s 2 doubles but he had a good and bad day.

He pulled two doubles to right field (good!) and then got thrown out trying to advance to third on ground balls twice (bad!). “Those are bad reads, plain and simple. I’ll learn from it,”

Personally seeing him rack up  two  extra base hits trumps any bad base running in February.. This is a smart kid, his only issues are health  related, playing the field, smacking a few two  baggers, thats a win win

Scouting Report on Thairo Estrada

Estrada isn’t on MLB’s top 30 NYY prospects, but he made Mikey 2 Chin’s list and mikey lifted a scouting report for him

Scouting Report:

It seems Estrada has inherited the old Ramon Flores perpetual height/weight listing. Thairo hasn’t been 5-foot-10 and 155 lbs. in about two years now. (He’s reportedly closer to 6-foot-0 and 180 lbs. or so nowadays.) Last season Estrada made real progress incorporating his lower half into his swing, which unlocked some over-the-fence power and more hard contact in general. Previously he was a slap hitter with close to an all-arms swing. Thairo controls the strike zone and can get the bat on the ball with regularity, giving him intriguing offensive upside. He has shortstop hands and a strong arm, though it’s possible he’ll wind up at second long-term because his first step isn’t great. Last season he played mostly second and third in deference to more highly regarded shortstop prospects.

What’s Next?

Estrada is a personal fave — is it possible for a top 30 guy to be a sleeper? — and this is a big season for him. He’s going to be Rule 5 Draft eligible next offseason, and if he manages to reach Double-A and have some success this summer, teams could look at him as a cheap utility option with a little upside. Thairo is far from a finished product on either side of the ball, of course, so his 2017 season will be spent focusing on overall refinement and continued improvement with his swing.

  4. For 10 years I made that Sarasota to Tampa drive many times. Every March, then, I went down to play ball with 25 guys. Wednesday thru Sunday, 7 game series. Immaculate fields, paid Umpires, da best!
Group dinners in the back rooms of restaurants away from the public. And later, end up in various trashy places. Of which Cheetas was a major highlight!
Naked women & Baseball. It don’t get much better than that!!!

  10. the.yankee.reportThe Yankees defeated the Tigers today 9-5 in Tampa! Masahiro Tanaka threw two perfect innings in his first spring start. Gary Sanchez got the offense going in the third inning with a 2-run home run, his first of the spring. Chris Carter (1) and Thairo Estrada (2) also had solo shots. Ruben Tejada, Headley and Castro all had RBI singles. Clint Frazier continued his hot hitting with a 2-run double in the fifth. Layne, Heller, Shreve, Holder, Frare and Coshow all got work in on the mound today. The Yanks will take on the Braves tomorrow in Tampa with Bryan Mitchell on the mound.
