The Starter Wars

We Digress

Watching China vs the Dutch, can’t help to wonder shouldn’t all these little Asia kids at the game be working?

After all, you know China made 98% of the stuff on the field..

BTW this Dutch  team  came to play and Gregorius looks fantastic

The-ahah Yankees Win

The Yankees went to  10-3 on the ST season with  a long winded 10 inning walk off win in front of what  ever was left of the 9,300 fans at GMS who watched CC Sabathia pitch  his first  ST game of the season ..

It’s a good thing the Yanks were playing at  home  or I’m not sure the  young energetic Bombers offense could have locked down this see saw affair.. Starter  CC Sabathia looked pretty good, but the rest of the staff that  followed, not so much..

A day removed from the frustration watching Bryan Mitchell  and Jordan Montgomery struggle vs the Pirates, despite none of the Pirate first  string out fielders playing in their 13-1 win, the Yankees pitching once again looked a little shaggy in the 7-6 win vs the Rays

Sabathia has gotten back on track and appears to  be a far cry from  the drunken loser that  toed the rubber for Girardi from 2013 to 2015…Three years of Sabathia just  stealing $23M per season while putting a strain on the Bombers expanding payroll, was the poster-child for Not giving pitchers long term  contracts..

Of course it didn’t stop the desperate to  win now GM / Owner from diving head first into  that same shallow pool ..Verlander, Scherzer, Lester, Price, Kershaw, Tanaka, big money 200 inning pitchers, who haven’t seen the back end of their contracts just yet, so  the honeymoon is still in bloom

Sabathia originally signed with the Yanks 7 yr’s $161M in 2009, he could opt out after the 2011 season..

Sabathia after  3 full  seasons had hauled in roughly $69M of the $161M guaranteed, so he had 4 yr’s $92M left on his contract when he opted out..

$9M signing bonus (paid 12/31/08, 3/1/09 and 7/31/09)
09:$14M, 10-15:$23M annually

The Yanks gave him a 5 yr $122M extension at the age of 31, he’ll  start  the last year of that  extension as a 36 yr old back of the rotation piece.. It’s all  gonna finish with a happy ending, Sabathia has cleaned up his substance abuse issues, and he’s finally starting to  command the Andy Pettitte approach to  his game..

“I learned a lot. Obviously my style of pitching now is close to his at the end of his career,’’ Sabathia said of Pettitte, who is in camp for two days and threw batting practice. “It’s a lot of fun to be able to bounce stuff off a Hall of Famer. I have a really close relationship where I can call him any time of the night and he will answer and talk me through my problems. It’s a lot of fun to have that relationship.’’

I’m looking forward to  Sabathia’s senior citizen approach moving forward..The radar gun trend became  ubiquitous throughout the MLB scouting fraternity, and still is, but those aren’t the guys who  will  survive the Starter Wars… The craftsmen who can add, subtract,  slice and dice both  sides of the plate  over the course of 21 outs should be the premium commodity, and they  are..

At the moment kids trying to  bury the radar gun is a major contributor to arm, and shoulder injuries.. I can’t imagine a steady diet of breaking ball  grips to be  any the less vulnerable to injury?

Perhaps less focus on heat, and more on sharpening your pitching skills, by mastering different grips that create different velocities and angles assisting  in creating a pitcher’s BFF,  deception.. This might help  with injury’s, or it may  speed up  the injury process?

What  we do know if kids like Severino  and Mitchell want to be shut down 1 and 2 inning relievers they’re on the right path.. If they  want to  upscale  their tax bracket and break into  the starting pitcher fraternity, they have some work  to  do..

One thing we’ve noticed from these new hungry kids on the block, they  play 27 outs, despite the games being of the  fake variety..

We owe this gratifying occurrence to a situation the Bombers haven’t had in a very long time, job openings!! Yes, it’s the number one reason, and at  the root of all  this late February, early March  energy we’re seeing from the Baby Bombers…

  1. Gegorius has 3 doubles today vs China.. hitting to all fields.. These guys are playing hard..

Heller high Water might be the next heart throb to bite the dust, at least Chicken Shreve coughed up a HR, we don’t want him sneaking into the 25 man roster, in fact….

  2. Ben Heller High Water might be one of the best monikers you’ve come up with yet, Sally Boy. Since late last year, it looks like CC has come all the way around in completing the transition to be a Pettitte like hurler.
If he ends up having a decent year, re-inforcing that said transition, don’t be surprised if the Yanks bring him back as a 5th starter for a lot less Do Re Mi.
The fascination with the radar gun has contributed greatly to the plethora of arm injuries we hear about almost on a daily basis. But I think there’s something else.
A lot of these kids play on teams All Year Long!
There’s no down time. No chance to let the (young) arm heal & rest.
So by the time they’re fighting for a shot in the Majors, the hinge becomes unhinged.

    • good point on the no down time scone check another box for sure

and yes I bet CC works for $12M or something like that, of course we’ll have to see how he’s pitching, but he seems ready to give the home res a home town discount

I wonder if Cleveland would be in that mix? Lebron is his buddy, a quick plane flight back and forth from New Jersey, and they’re a contender

  4. Good point Sal on the Cleveland connection. But, if push comes to shove, & the $ don’t escalate, the Yanks have the edge. Firmly ensconced in Joisey, kids, school, civic stuff, & Yankee legacy, I think he takes Hal’s funny money.
