Rolling A 7

with 11 comments

The Yanks in front of 9,800 fans at  GMS in Tampa Fla picked up  their 13th Spring Training win with a dominant 7-1 victory over a somewhat diluted Detroit Tiger travel squad

In a season where the NY Yankees are gambling on youth  and suspect starting pitching, It may have been one of the most rewarding  games this spring with TJ Tanaka’s 4 innings of unmitigated dominance, and El Gary SanBino’s Hr and RBI knock.. Even when SanBino is late on a fast ball, he still manages to hit 330 foot pop ups to  right field that  end up as souvenirs !!

Add in Greg Bird’s improved defense, and surgical  approach to dissecting pitchers, the phenom that is Gleyber Torres, who  was brushed back  by Justin Wilson on one pitch, then  came back to flip  an outside offering into  the right field seats as payback.

Even the investment firm of Jacoby and Ellsbury who received a well  deserved kick in the ass from Cashman this off season seems to  finally  be earning   a portion of that hideous $153M contract #HalCare awarded him back in 2014..

Matt Holliday also smacked a 2 strike  3 run Tater to right field…

Tanaka’s first  6 batters

Gose struck out looking.
Romine struck out swinging.
Upton struck out swinging.

Moya struck out swinging.
McCann struck out swinging.
Avila struck out swinging.

Interesting point made by David Cone  about Tanaka abandoning his 4 seam  fast ball, and focusing strictly on his 2 seamer.. When  asked why he doesn’t use the 4 seam grip anymore, Tanaka gave his best Yogi impression and said, “because it was getting hit”

David Cone  was a welcomed voice in the booth alongside Baltimore Kenny Singleton.. Kenny is still  rockin the Shag but Cone spices up  the pocket by really explaining the pitching, that  duo is a good listen  ..

Bryan Mitchell pretty much nailed down a spot in the pen as a hybrid reliever in this outing.. After a shaky 5th inning, the pitched 3 scoreless bridging from the 5th  to  the 9th inning..

4 innings, 3 hits, 1 run, 1 BB, 2 K’s

The way  the Bombers rotation is built Girardi  will need at  least 2 hybrid / Ramiro Mendoza type pitchers amongst the  7 bull pen relievers

Mitchell and Warren should be  the front runners for these two spots? Pitchers who  can take over a winnable game in the 4th inning, and get the ball  to the Clippard, Betances, Chappy triumvirate

the Whole 9

Excited? Not so Much? WTF?

Baseball is no longer the National pastime in our country, that  distinction belongs to  the Latin American countries you’re watching play with endless passion in the WBC..

“The fans never give up, we never give up,” Cruz said on his postgame TV spot. “We love baseball. We breathe baseball 24/7 all year round.”

Don’t take my word on the subject, just tune in to America’s number 1 Sports talk radio shows on WFAN this Spring…

Despite MLB, the Yankees specifically, starting an exciting new season,  toss in  the WBC  providing playoff type  atmosphere, and the Mets once again a legitimate NL contender,   you’ll  be forced to listen to  any and everything but baseball coverage Monday  through Saturday…

Baseball Boy Ed Randall sneaks in a 3 hour show on Sunday mornings to  break  the ice..

We understand it’s NFL’s free agency, but even when that’s not the case it’s NFL football 24/7, despite the Jets being one of the worst run franchises in any sport..Also on the pecking order  docket  is NBA basketball despite the Knicks / Nets tandem becoming completely unwatchable, and dysfunctional..

Even Canada’s National pastime hockey, despite there being only one  passionate / knowledgeable hockey sports jock on  WFAN, Boomer Easiason, is getting more air time then baseball

Unfortunately Boomer’s attempt at authenticity on the Boomer and Carton  morning show is hi-jacked by his intolerably nauseating sidekick Craig Carton..
