Yanks Kap 15th Win with 4 HR’s

with 4 comments

The Yanks capped off their Spring Training leading 15th win over the Blue Jays, 11-5 in front of 5,400 lunatics at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium in Dunedin Fla.

The Bombers took their Tater Sticks with  them on the road blasting 4 HR’s on the afternoon

The Yanks scored 4 runs off Aaron Sanchez and Jason Grilli over the first  4 innings, then  stormed back from a 5-4 deficit, scoring 7 runs in the last three innings off minor league pitchers

Aaron Hicks, Starlin Castro, Rob Refsnyder and Clint Frazier went yard, and Yankees top pitching prospect James Kaprielian turned in two scoreless innings, paving the way for New York’s 11-5 Grapefruit League win over the Blue Jays on Thursday afternoon at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium.

With the Yankees down by 1 in the seventh, Yankees No. 2 prospect Frazier led off the inning with his first homer of spring to pull the score even, and Kaprielian kept the Blue Jays scoreless and hitless for the next two innings, striking out three.

The buzz of the day had to be James Kaprielian’s  one and only appearance for the Varsity before being shipped out to minor league camp

2 innings, 1 BB, 3 K’s, 1 GIDP

The 23-year-old Kaprielian was clocked as high as 96 mph by the outfield radar gun at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium. He also showcased a sharp slider, needing just 26 pitches to record six outs.

“I didn’t think he overthrew. I thought he stayed within himself,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “You’re always concerned in that first outing, and he’s been champing at the bit. I’m happy for him.”

Kap  followed a very ineffective Luis Cessa who looks to have possibly lost a chance to  go  North in  three weeks with  this latest  clunker, Ben Heller High Water who may have nailed down  a 25 man  roster spot, and Bryan Mitchell  who may have resurfaced as the #5 starter..

In the seventh inning, Kaprielian struck out Anthony Alford swinging on three pitches, issued a five-pitch walk to Richard Urena and then induced Steve Pearce to hit into a 5-4-3 double play.

Kaprielian returned for the eighth, freezing Russell Martin and Rowdy Tellez looking at fastballs for called third strikes before getting Jon Berti to line out to right field. Kaprielian said that he got a small thrill out of facing batters with legitimate big league resumes.

With no TV and only an extremely biased Toronto radio  crew doing the play by play we have no idea how Kaprielian looked, he did face one MLB pro Russell Martin

“Obviously, a guy like Russell Martin has a pretty strong career so far,” Kaprielian said. “He’s a Gold Glover behind the dish, and he can definitely hit the snot out of the ball. It’s fun being able to size yourself up a little bit against guys like that.”

Kaprielian  will stay in Tampa and start  the season  at High A, until it warms up, the hope is he blows through  the competition and lands at Trenton.. Kap making the Varsity roster in 2017 is long shot, they  will baby him after his strained right flexor tendon injury, but a target for him could be a September call up, with  a 2015 Severino  as the template

the Whole 9

Lox and Battles

Yankees beat  reporter Bryan Hoch has a projected 25 man roster breaking camp in April.. There were a few surprises

Hoch has Mitchell  and Severino  winning the final  two  rotation  spots, with Chad Green  and Adam Warren heading to  the pen, Luis Cessa heading to AAA…?

Starting pitchers (5): Masahiro Tanaka, Michael Pineda, CC Sabathia, Luis Severino, Bryan Mitchell. The first three spots are locks, and the Yankees are giving Severino (3.68 ERA in 7 1/3 IP, 3 BB, 9 K) every opportunity to bounce back from his dismal showing in the rotation last year. Mitchell (3.77 ERA in 14 1/3 IP, 3 BB, 12 K) looks close to where he was at the end of camp last year, and that may be enough to win the job.

The Magnificent 7, with Heller being the surprise.. We thought Jon Niese based on his professional  track record and the fact he can opt out of his minor league contract would land the 7th  spot.. There is still  time for players to  win and lose spots for sure

Bullpen (7): Dellin Betances, Aroldis Chapman, Tyler Clippard, Chad Green, Ben Heller, Tommy Layne, Adam Warren. Chapman, Betances and Clippard are locks, and the Yankees would like to keep some of their rotation contenders stretched out at Triple-A, which could ticket Luis Cessa (7.04 ERA in 7 2/3 IP) there to start the year. Green (2.08 ERA in 8 2/3 IP) and Heller (1.04 ERA in 8 2/3 IP) have looked sharp after getting tastes of the bigs last year. A wild card could be lefty Jonathon Niese, who joined the team late in camp but is being thought of both in short and long roles.

The Aaron’s Race

The 13 position players only have one question mark, Aaron Hicks has a better line then Aaron Judge who has slipped up some at  the plate..Hoch without choosing seems to  have given Hicks more ink

Judge’s improved contact rate has drawn attention, as he’s hit .265 (9-for-34) with a triple, two homers, three RBIs and nine strikeouts. Hicks is making it a battle, hitting his second spring homer on Thursday and carrying a .286 average (8-for-28) with two doubles, a triple and three RBIs. Girardi said that numbers can be deceiving in short samples, “so you have to look at their at-bats and what they do defensively, and what they do on the basepaths.”

Girardi has left a small loop hole to  squeeze #HalCare’s choice, Aaron Judge through the cracks unless Hicks just makes it obvious he’s the more ready player…

Most pundits  don’t see Judge on the bench as a 4th out fielder, and if the two players stay  relatively close, Judge has more fan  appeal?

If we don’t think  that has anything to  do  with who  starts in Right Field, go back  to Brillo Levine’s trashing of Dellin Betances in their  arbitration case, Levine blaming Bettances’ poor showing at closer as a reason the Bombers attendance fell in September..

Here’s what Murray reportedly said in a statement:

“With regards to Dellin, it was very ironic to hear the Yankees’ president express his love and affection when he spent the only portion of the hearing, to which he contributed to, was calling this player by the wrong first name. It is Dellin, for the record. He then proceeded to blame Dellin for the Yankees’ declining ticket sales and their lack of playoff history while trying to bully the panel, saying something to the effect that the sky will fall if they rule for the player.

Here is Levine’s Q&A

  1. Hoch almost reads like what have you done for me lately, in his choices, although he’s down there talking to people everyday so we’ll stick with his take..

Judge needs to separate himself from Hicks the way Sanchez and Bird have left Carter and Romine in the dust, unlike last ST

Higashoka based on options will not make the club, Romine would become a Free Agent if he doesn’t make the team out of camp, he’s out of options..

Torreyes has locked up the utility gig barring injury, Girardi loves the guy.. Carter is a twice a week starter, which might not play well, he might be the type of player that needs consistent AB’s, Carter will be an interesting watch… NJ.com has already labeled him a $3.5M waste of money….

It’s a little to early for that stuff, Bird has proven he can hit, but he still has to prove he can stay healthy and he’s not the new Nick Johnson

Heller high Water is a fav of mine, but I’m surprised he’s gotten the nod over the more experienced Niese, who you’d think the Yanks would want to keep around

although we’ve seen enough of the low risk high reward gidrools like Tony Swarzak… Girardi loves those veterans

  2. Yanks not wearing the Green today, good job boys….Interesting line up with Ellsbury and Sanchez 1 and 2, they lit a fire under Ellsbury’s ass man, I can see him leading off, Gardner down in the line-up… $153M reasons why they’ll do that if Ellsbury shows a pulse

  3. Tanaka 4.1 innings, Shreve 0.2 innings, Montgomery 4 innings Yanks No Hit Detroit… Tanaka looked crazy good after the first inning, Montgomery was great, both guys throw live pitches, Tanaka looks unhittable.. Monty looks like an overhand Miller

  4. Tanaka no hit the Tigers for 4.1 innings, and I don’t think he ever got to his 2 seamer, he was saving that for the latter portion of the game…. A clinic on how to dominate a line-up, while never exceeding the 91 MPH speed limit …… Also a clinic in how to make GM’s drool when he hits FA……

    Shreve 0.2 innings

Montgomery was touted in a media puff piece last week after a non televised appearance.. His line didn’t match the accolades..?

Today he was pretty good and nasty No Hitting the Tigers for 4 innings… Upton hit a bullet to 3rd base but bingo, 5 unassisted for the out…That’s about it, lotta soft contact and scattered punch outs…

I think Tanaka may have confused the daylights out of the Tiger hitters, he was throwing wiffle balls, but commanding them, and they were toast by the time Monty got to them from the southpaw side….
