Yanks Spring A No No

with 3 comments

The Yanks picked up  their 16th win of the Spring with  a 3-0 win over the punchless Tigers in front of 9,700 fans at  Lakeland Fla

TJ Tanaka, Chicken Shreve, and the new kid on the block Jordan Montgomery  tossed a No Hitter, the Bombers first  such Grapefruit League feat  since 1983

“I felt that I wasn’t at my best, but considering that I still was able to put up some zeroes, so that part satisfied me,” Tanaka said through a translator. “The slider and the cut fastball, the location of it, I felt like I was all over the place. The command of those can be better.”

Does this sound like a man  who just  pitched 4.1 innings of no hit baseball? Actually when Masahiro Tanaka first  started this game yesterday I thought perhaps he had started his St Paddy’s Day celebration  a bit early..

After securing two outs in the first  inning he looked a bit wobbly walking two  batters and allowing a stolen base, before punching out Justin Upton to  end the threat.. An  error by Gleyber Torres allowed a runner to  reach base in the 2nd inning, but Tanaka erased the E6 by inducing a DP, and the complete shut down  was on..

Tanaka has been awesome all Spring, yesterday despite bouts of self proclaimed wildness, he looked  un-hittable.. Tanaka put on a clinic on how to  dominate without ever exceeding the 91 MPH speed limit.

Shreve got 2 outs in the 5th inning then handed the ball off to Lefty Jordan Montgomery, who did get some help  from his defense, but he like Tanaka had the Tigers off balance for the final  4 innings of game..

Highlight catches helped his cause, from Tyler Wade’s sliding gem in center field on Dixon Machado’s blooper to Pete Kozma’s leaping grab at short against Andrew Romine to Ruben Tejada’s lunging catch at third base to snare a scorched liner from Justin Upton.

Who is Jordan Montgomery?

A fourth-round selection by the Yankees in the 2014 Draft out of the University of South Carolina, the 24-year-old went 14-5 with a 2.13 ERA in 25 starts between Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last year, going 5-1 with an 0.97 ERA in six International League outings.

Monty got himself another start, after his 4 inning stint, it was by far his best outing of the Spring, but after his last non-televised appearance he received a favorable write-up that  didn’t match  his pitching line… Yesterday  awe saw what all  the fuss was about

Girardi  did mention Monty could be a factor coming out of the pen, but at  the moment only Severino, and that’s based more on his pedigree then great  results, is leading the competition..

Montgomery tossed his hat in the ring along with Cessa, Green, Mitchell, and Warren

  1. Mateo got sent to High A Camp, disappointing Spring for the kid, I don’t understand what happened to him since we saw him dominate last ST…I hope he gets it back.. Not even a AA assignment…
