Somebody Changed the Lock

with 4 comments

The Yanks didn’t get much  coverage yesterday  as they notched their 17th  win against 6 losses with a very sloppy 6-4 victory  over the Astros in front of 7,600 at the Stadium of the Palm Beaches in Fla…

Severino No Lock

The win was probably nice for the bus ride back to Tampa for some of the players, but for Luis Severino, not so much… The Dominican Dandelion was awful in his relief outing, that  was actually treated like a start…

3.1 innings,  6 hits, 3 runs, 2 BB’s, 2 K’s

Despite entering the game in the 5th inning, It was obvious Severino  was once again expected to be the complete pitcher and use a healthy combination of fast ball, slider, change up, while  treating  the outing like it was a start

But

Even before Severino got to his secondary pitches, his fast ball  command was non existent .. He wasn’t in rhythm, something that has become all  to familiar with  just  about all of his starts since the beginning of 2016…

Thinking about pitch selection, seems to  be his Achilles Heel, that’s when  his mechanics rush, he aims his pitches, misses the glove, and  is way  too  predictable if and  when he finally does find the strike zone

He was fooling absolutely no one, he wasn’t able to make pitches that look like strikes but dive out of the zone with  late movement.. When he pounded the strike zone his pitches got way  too much plate and were hit.

When he tried to paint the black he wasn’t close, when he went to his slider and change-up they had little depth or command.. When Severino is out of rhythm, he’s a complete mess, it was 2016 Starter deja vu all over

Severino  was so  bad, it triggered George King’s article that maybe Severino  doesn’t belong in the major leagues?

If this keeps up, Luis Severino is going to find himself in the starting rotation to start the season— at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

No fastball command. No shot.

Severino  openly has confided in Tanaka in an  effort to  find a way  to  stay calm when he takes the ball as a Starter…He can  talk  to  Tanaka all he wants, the difference between the two pitchers is night and day..Tanaka is a 6 pitch stud Thoroughbred, Severino is more of a 2 pitch plow horse…..

When manager Joe Girardi was asked if Severino could find himself at Triple-A to work out his issues, he said, “That’s the million-dollar question and we’re going to have to talk about it. You talk about trying to finish off people’s development but you also talk about winning.’’

“Bad command, I was missing a lot,’’ Severino said. “My fastball was way better last time. I throw a couple down [in the zone] but I was trying too hard to make the perfect pitch.’’

If the Yanks want to  win, Severino needs to go back to  being a hybrid reliever out of the pen.. If they  want to  develop a starter, then he gone,  back to  the minors…This inconsistency has been redundant far too long at the MLB level..

“I have to practice more in the bullpen,’’ he said of repeating his delivery and not rushing. “Sometimes the pressure of the game, you start thinking about that. I have to keep working.’’

Unfortunately for Severino the ability to  slow the game down is a key ingredient not only for a pitcher but for any elite MLB player.. The Yankees main priority is developing starting pitching, that’s how the NYY accountants will meet their bottom line, cheap help in the rotation, Severino might not be part of that  solution

Five days ago it appeared he had locked up  the 4th  spot in the rotation, not based on tremendous results, more so on the fact  he does have electric stuff and considerable upside

The 3.1 inning debacle  could have been much  worse had his defense not bailed him out with  some acrobatic plays in the field

Yesterday somebody changed the lock on his door, and the only thing Luis Severino  is getting is a sore fist from knocking. If Cashman wants to  develop  a starter and if indeed practice makes perfect, then the SWB Rail Riders should be his next stop, not the Bronx

Adam Warren got the start yesterday, which I don’t understand ? Warren is a nice affordable component, but his upside is back of the rotation starter on an NL team in a pitchers ball park

He wasn’t able to get through  4 innings with  his 65 pitch limit

3.2 innings, 4 hits, 1 run, 1 BB, 1 K

He was better then Severino which  pretty much  should tell  you all  you need to know…

Both Hicks and Judge picked up  knocks as the battle for right field continues, neither player has stepped up to grab that gig… The Yanks are trying to  hand the job to Judge, but he can’t seem to  separate himself from Hicks…

It’s not that Hicks has been impressive, it’s Judge has been just OK.. Spring Training might be boring for some, but in New York, the Yanks are still  trying to  figure out their rotation and one of their corner out field spots

Unfortunately two young players who deserve to  go North, Clint Frazier and Gleyber Torres aren’t being considered based on their lack of minor league experience..

While most folks can’t wait until April 3rd and the real games start, I can’t wait until May / June when possibly, at least Frazier might break  through and find himself spending MLB meal money

Frazier went 2 for 2, and Torres 1 for 1, both players look impressive…

Tyler Wade had a rough  afternoon going 0-3 with 3 punch outs…
