The Yanks played the Rays  to  a 5-5 tie in front of 5,100 at Charlotte Sports Park, Port Charlotte, FL.. We had Thursday March 23rd marked on our calendars as Jordan Montgomery day

With  Cashman  and Girardi  getting increasingly frustrated by the lackluster performances from the Louies, Severino and  Cessa, and the pedestrian outings delivered by Mitchell  and Green, 6’6” southpaw  Jordan Montgomery got the may day call from his stymied bosses…

We last saw Monty closing out Tanaka’s no  hitter vs the Tigers, he was impressive pitching 4 scoreless, he’s tall, he throws over the top, he has 4 pitches, one of them  can hit 94, the other 3 bend, twist, and turn all  at different speeds, and per Austin Romine are no  day  at the beach trying to catch

“He went right at him,’’ catcher Austin Romine said of the 6-foot-6 Montgomery, who reached 95 mph in the final frame. “He releases the ball high and gets a lot of swings and misses. The two-seamer [fastball] was invisible. The kid’s got a lot of pitch-ability. If it is hard to catch, it has to be hard to hit. He pitches in and is not afraid.’’

George King from the NY Post equated Montgomery’s chances of cracking the Bomber rotation  to a race horse Donerail, who  won  the 1913 Kentucky Derby at 91-1, odds..

Rick Sutcliffe who  was in the booth with some fat guy, and in between Fatso  and FruitLoops  trying to  sharpen up  their Borsch Belt Comedy act, the former Cy Young pitcher repeated some very encouraging words after Monty punched out Evan Longoria in the first inning

“That’s all I have to  see, he can be on my staff”

As the day  moved forward Montgomery would strike out Longo a 2nd time, he walked off the mound  after 4.1 innings with  8 Tampa Bay K’s hanging off his belt, 3 hits, 2 runs with an asterisk… A Judge misplayed triple that  eventually scored on a sac fly, and an inherited run by JR Graham who imploded in relief..

“Definitely on his A game today,” said Steven Souza Jr., who tripled against Montgomery and scored on Sucre’s sacrifice fly. “It’s Spring Training. Let’s not read too much into it. But definitely had good stuff.”

Girardi  gave the kid a moderate thumbs up, but no date for another start, Montgomery gave the response you love to hear when  asked about his chance to  crack the 25 man roster

“You can’t think like that. I try to do my best every time and whatever happens, happens,’’ said Montgomery, who went a combined 14-5 with a 2.13 ERA in 25 starts for SWB and Double-A Trenton. “I focus on baseball.’’

That focus, added to a chip on his shoulder Montgomery says has been there all his life and developed by others doubting him since a young age

Maybe I’m being a bit over the top and premature  with my excitement after watching Montgomery’s last 8.1 innings, 3 hits, 2 runs, 10 K’s, no BB’s, but a lefty being compared to  a 2016 JA Happ, and the Bombers desperation for home grown pitching to thrive, I’m taking what I saw and running with it

Hit and Run

The Hicks / Judge  right field battle fought to  a tie yesterday

Judge went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a K, he also misplayed a single into  a  triple and an eventual run..

Judge ST 2017

.298 .377 .511 .888 with  2 HR’s, 4 RBI’s, 12 K’s 47 AB’s, 25.5% K rate

Hicks went 1 for 2, a double, a walk, a run scored , 1 RBI, a few great  defensive plays..

Hicks ST 2017

.268 .362 .536 .898 with 3 HR’s 4 RBI’s, 7 K’s 41 AB’s, 17% K rate

Ronald Torreyes had two hits on of them  a HR, and he has to be in the lead to  start  the season at SS

Frazier had a sac fly, Wade stole third base and scored the tying run in the 9th off Tampa Bays closer Colome

    • F that sucks… The only thing worth watching was Montgomery so you didn’t miss much, the Monty video covers all his K’s we’ll see what happens, worse case I’d rather him coming out of the pen then Jon Niese, keep him in a Hybrid roll, and first chance slip him into the rotation

  2. Sally, getting ahead of ourselves with Montgomery aren’t we? His first 3 games this spring were questionable. Yankees pitching after Tanaka might be the Division worst?

    • Hey 67, if you can’t spoil your kids what good are you lol….

Sheffield, Montgomery, Adams, and Kaprielian give me some hope, I will admit I’m less then enthused with how all 4 of the contenders pitched so far..

The only guy with 4 pitches (Cessa) has the worst ERA, and none of the other 3 have much deception, but neither did Kevin Gausman….

Kelly and Barnes were impressive vs the Yanks, all Cherington guys, keep Dombrowski away from any more reliever negotiations and you might finally break his my bull pens always suck.com curse…

      Thanks for the drive by
