Ball of Confusion

with 12 comments

The Yanks snagged their 20th  victory of the ST season  with a walk off 3-2 win over the Fighting Phils in front of what ever was left of the original 10,252 fans at GMS in Tampa..

Willy Castillo  a 32 yr old journeyman catcher out of the Toronto  system who was assigned to AAA after the Yanks acquired him on a minor league contract in December 2016 whacked a run tying double in the 9th inning, plating the speedy 22 yr 2nd baseman Abiatal Avelino who led off the 9th inning with  a knock to center field..

It didn’t take long for Trenton’s  Trey Cheese Amburgey a kid I saw play LF for the Staten Island Yankees in 2015 to plate the winning run with an RBI single up  the middle that  chased the huffing and puffing Castillo  home for the winning run

It looked too me like Castillo was dead in the water on the little dink and dunk  knock by Amburgey, but the throw from  short center field hit the mound and Bob’s your Uncle, the Bombers snatched the 1 run victory from the jaws of defeat..

Before the trio of minor league heroes came to  the rescue, the Bombers Varsity offense was pretty much  shut down by former Tampa Bay starter Jeremy Helickson who  hurled a very good looking 6.1 innings, 5 hits, 1 run, 1 BB, 3 K outing

The Yanks managed to plate their only run off Helickson  in the 3rd inning when Gardner rapped a single scoring Judge who had singled previously in the inning… The run cut a 2-0 Phillie lead in half and the score remained 2-1 until until Amburgey and the two Dominican Dandy’s sent the Bomber faithful home happy with the exciting walk off

The Yankees pull one out they tuchas bottom of the 9th,,
K I D S !!!!!!

Yes the man on the street was ecstatic, as all Bomber fans have been this Spring… Despite there still being 16 inches of snow on the ground in NY, the Yanks have managed to  warm Yankees Universe’ tuchas with  some grind-em out play, running their ST record to  20-7

Back at the Ranch CC Sabathia who  started this game had a pretty unimpressive outing

Halfway through Philadelphia’s third time through the batting order, every starter had notched at least one hit aside from catcher Ryan Hanigan, who walked in the up 9 hits, 2 runs, 1 BB, 1 K in 5.1 innings, 75-pitch effort (51 for strikes)..

Sabathia’s appearance still managed to  draw   praise from Girardi after the Yanks named CC, by default, the #2 slot in the Bombers rotation

“Right, left, right,” Girardi said when asked if there was any particular reason. Masahiro Tanaka works the opener, and Michael Pineda will follow Sabathia. “CC had a pretty good year last year when you look at what he did.”

We wish Sabathia well, but he’s an unmitigated dinosaur on the bump..At $25M, he  can’t run or field his position, if he’s not spotting his pitches perfectly there will be  a ton of balls put in play, he’s coming off yet another knee procedure so he’s been slow out of the gate compiling innings, and being anointed the #2 spot is really an indictment on how insipid Girardi / Cashman’s rotation is after Tanaka

Sabathia is what he is, the real  buzz in this game  came over the last 3 innings when Luis Severino had his best outing of the Spring

3 innings, no  runs, no hits,  5 K’s

Severino  apparently inspired by Jordan Montgomery’s recent push to  crack  the rotation did make Girardi’s  decision a bit more difficult as the battle for the 4th  and 5th spot in the rotation has whittled down  to Mitchell, Severino  and long shot Montgomery

“I was working with (pitching coach Larry Rothschild) a lot in the bullpen, trying to throw the fastball inside, trying to be on top of the ball. That worked for me,” Severino said.

Luis Cessa has already been shipped back to AAA, Chad Too Green  has the best ERA of the bunch, but Green still  hasn’t shown he can  be trusted navigating 3 times around a line-up, but then  again, neither has anybody else sans Tanaka?

Word on the Bricks, Severino’s best outing might be too little too late? With  Bryan Mitchell  outpitching Severino and the rest of the competition for the final two spots in the rotation this spring, Sevy could start  the season at AAA?

speaking of which, there might actually only be competition for one spot. The Yankees are considering carrying just four starting pitchers to start the season since they likely wouldn’t need a fifth starter until 12 games into April.

More on that later

Mitchell  was on track  to  break  camp  with the varsity after his 2016 ST but a broken toe late in March  shelved him, perhaps that might weigh in the decision making… Severino has varsity experience which  could put him in the rotation  and Mitchell in the pen, or vice versus ?

If the Yanks want to develop starting pitching then Cessa, Green, Severino  and Montgomery should join Chance Adams at AAA to  stay  stretched out.. If they want to  win games, put fannies in the seats, and contend then Severino, Green, and Montgomery  should join Warren Betances, Clippard, and Chappy in the pen

That  won’t happen, Penny Layne could sneak in as a lefty specialist, Jon Niese could be a long man, and Ben Heller could crack the pen..

If the Yanks only use 4 starters for 2 and a half weeks, the pen would have the luxury of carrying 13 men.. With Gregorius out, ( a huge Blow) the Bombers could add another man on the bench and stay  with 11 pitchers which is a real long shot..

There are a bunch of decisions forthcoming in the next 8 days with the season opening in Tampa on Sunday April 2nd

Hicks and Judge remain neck  and neck  with Judge the favorite to  start, and Hicks the 4th OFer.. Both players had knocks yesterday.. It looks like Torreyes will win the SS position unless one of Solano, Tejada, or Wade go on a week long tear.. Kozma I don’t see as an option

As for the last two  rotation spots it’s still  a ball of confusion

  2. I am hoping the Yanks good fortune(luck ) continues when the season starts. Seems the bounces have been going their for a change.
Sutcliffe said Montgomery was major league ready during the telecast the other day. They need starters so why not give him a shot,we know the other candidates are dreck. Severino needs to stay in the pen-along with Warren- and avoid him going down the Joba road to oblivion. Besides the starters finding a ss for a month is a problem. Most of the options are not on the 40 man or don’t have to be protected this year. Cashman was on with Brickhouse during the telecast and ruled out Gleyber so good luck.

    • hey Big D, I’m all in on Montgomery, and God forbid they mess with Torres service time… Francesa buying they would ruin the kid if he bombed… did it ruin Mantle, how about Sanchez his first trip up, he faced Sale and they sent him back down.. Romine beat out Sanchez for Pete sake

SS is gonna be a problem….the 40 man roster is a major problem, already too many kids to protect, that I do understand…..I hate that rule 5

  3. I hope this game starts to thin out the herd, let’s get these projects the hell outta here

i’m glad Adam Warren solidified his bull pen roll today……One more fake start would be overkill.. “We didn’t want to have the Blue Jays see Pineda this close to the season so we scratched him for Warren”

Why, Pineda never pitches the same way twice there is no book on him….When he’s on 10% of the time he’s un-hittable, all the rest of the time he’s a nut case…

  7. From

Also no tv or radio tomorrow or Monday per that website

It’s possible, probably even likely, that the Yankees will keep four starters for two turns and thus temporally go with an eight-man bullpen with two candidates (Green and Severino?) opening in Triple-A. That format would lead to someone being called up for game 12, perhaps after what could amount to a one-game pitch-off for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

  8. If they don’t take Wade, Holliday would be the 5th OF that’s a mistake Ref is the better option over Carter he can play First OF 2nd base but Carter had $3.5m reasons why he gets the gig

    Hicks had made Gardner expendable

    Updated roster
With cuts made on Friday and Sunday, the Yankees now have 38 players in camp:
    PITCHERS (17)
