BaBaBa Bird Bird Bird, Bird is the Word

Brian Cashman says entire #Yankees coaching staff “voted for Gleyber Torres” for the starting SS job, but they’ve “got to keep perspective.”

Apparently the guys who  worked with Gleyber Torres, coached him, saw him play every game, voted the 20 year old  SS to be Gregorius’ replacement… “Got to keep perspective” means Cashman

1) Doesn’t want to  start Torres Service Time clock, forget  he hasn’t played in cold weather or not seen a pitch  above A ball.. He just saw AAA pitching for the last 5 weeks……

2) We can probably forget Tyler Wade breaking camp, The Yanks would have to keep the 22 year old Swiss Army Knife on their 40 man permanently and they  have too  many good prospects to hide from  the rule 5 draft.. So, does that mean  they  won’t use Wade all  season?

I’m not sure if  they  can play  around with a Taxi Squad rule Re: Wade, which would return him to the 40 man when say Tyler Austin would come off the 60  day DL?

3) Get ready for SS snoozeville Yankee style.. The Bombers look like they  will  use Ronald Torreyes at starting SS and somebody they  can DFA as their utility depth when Gregorius gets back in 6 to 8 weeks.. Come on down Pete Kozma and Ruben Tejada, two young men with little to no upside but in possession of a reliable contract who can hopefully not lose you a game…

Yesterday Pete Kozma smacked a game winning RBI single off Brand name Joe Biagini as the Yanks went 10-0 on YES, and 21-7 over all with a 6-5 win over the Blue Jays in front of 10,350 at GMS

Outside of having some fun with Kenny Shag Singelton’s 10-0 winning streak on YES Network, these games have no meaning, except we love when  the Bombers win no matter what  time of the year it is.. I have to  say  one thing about Gary Denbo’s kids, they play  all  27 outs

The Yanks have been getting some good bounces, sometimes talent isn’t enough, you need luck to  win in baseball or any sport

“Luck Is What Happens When Preparation Meets Opportunity”

The Bombers look like they’ve Trained to Reign just  a tick  harder then  everybody else this Spring, hence the 21-7 record.. In 8 more days we’ll  see  if Spring Training is “Fake Baseball” as the modern day philosopher Mike Hoops Francesa stated recently, or did preparation take opportunity to  the next level?

Out of respect to  a good soldier, Cashman and Girardi tossed Adam Warren’s name into the hat as a potential  candidate for one of the two  remaining starter spots.. Warren had a better shot winning the Power Ball lottery then a rotation assignment, so thankfully he took it upon himself to put that faux competition to  bed with a mediocre outing

3.1 innings, 4 hits, 4 runs, 2 BB’s, 4 K’s, 2 HR’s, 4.80 ERA

The start  was scheduled to be  Pineda’s turn, but the enigmatic hurler pitched vs a Pirates AA team instead..Pineda is in full Dog Day CSI:Spring Training mode, the Bombers are lucky if he focuses in the regular season, forget Spring Training

In 3 ¹/₃ innings, Pineda gave up two runs (one earned), four hits, one walk and struck out four.

To  say his results rendered a “smh” from Cash-Rardi would be an understatement..

I wouldn’t be too  concerned with the results, Pineda is day  to  day, hour to  hour, minute to minute, pitch  to pitch, breath to  breath when it comes to  reliability, so even regular season results can’t be pro-rated as viable intel..

The biggest  buzz of the day outside of Shag Singleton’s YES winning streak was Greg Bird belting his 7th Spring Training HR

This one had a free movie to  go  with the long trip out of GMS Stadium

This makes three in two games and seven for the spring for the lefty-swinging slugger, who has three more than anyone else in the Grapefruit League.

Bird has not only won the job vs RHP, he’s won the  job period, Patches Carter’s AB’s are diminishing by the day

Greg Bird will be the Yankees’ regular first baseman against righties, lefties, hard throwers, soft tossers … pretty much anyone and everyone.

Jon Niese the only other pitcher on the day  with  a shot to break camp as reliever  was once again not that good

1 inning, 2 hits, 1 run, 1 K

Sans, Tanaka, the  starting pitching has been a tremendous disappointment, it’s the one dent in the Bombers otherwise pristine Spring Training armor..

the Whole 9

As Joel Sherman reminds us, if the Yanks don’t come out of this regular season with some answers Re: their starting pitching, the rebuilding process will have taken a considerable hit..

While Cashman has done a good job filling the system with exciting  position players, not one of his auditioning young  pitchers has shown they’re ready to be counted on in 2018 when the number of veteran starters under contract is Zero

If you think the main competition in Yankees camp is for the 2017 Nos. 4-5 starters, you really are not seeing the big picture.

Because this is how many sure-thing rotation pieces the Yankees have for the 2018 season: 0.

And since the Yankees are plotting as much for the future – actually more – than the present, well, you can see how this whole rebuild collapses unless legitimate starters emerge from the pool of about eight youngsters the Yankees like.

Sherman opines, if Jordan Montgomery, who  wasn’t on anybody’s radar in February, or the first  two  weeks in March for that matter, has ascended as a viable candidate, then something went drastically wrong?

“Let’s be honest” how drastic was it really, Cashman brought the same suspects to  camp in 2017, that  we saw in 2016, how much better were they  gonna get??

In fact with  jobs finally opening in NY it was easier to  see guys trying to  do  too much and failing, then it was having a stand out can’t miss prospect force their way onto  the roster..

If  they  want to  talk  about 40 man roster issues, Jordan Montgomery’s last 8.1 innings have looked better then the overall work by  Severino, Cessa, Green, Mitchell or Warren  this spring

Monty is a ST invitee,  like Wade, Montgomery isn’t on the the 40 man so how real are his chances despite Girardi’s waxing poetic maybe his best starting pitching prospect?

Luis Cessa, who internally was the favorite when the camp opened, already has been sent to the minor league camp, the Yankees believing he was putting too much pressure on himself and lost his command. Luis Severino’s inability to master a changeup (he threw a few good ones Friday) has created enough inconsistency to re-raise the question if the Yankees should make him a power reliever.

I think Sherman has answered his own  question Re: Severino, the Yanks are desperate for starting pitching, moving Severino  to  the pen would eliminate a 23 yr old live arm from potentially grabbing one of the now 5 open spots in 2018…

Does Severino give you any confidence he can  start, not really…

Do  the Yanks want to  stop the madness trying to  develop him, probably not…

Are we going down the Joba Chamberlain road again, most likely yes….

#HalCare  and his accountants will get under the $197M Luxury Tax in 2018, or will  they?

As Sherman points out, Boston  ran out of patience trying to  develop  legitimate rotation options, not one of their 6 starters this yr is home grown

Price, Sale, Wright, Pomeranz, Porcello, and Rodriguez were either bought and paid for cash on the barrel head, or came via a trade that has just  about depleted the once infamous Boston farm  system

I disagree with Sherman adding Rodriguez to  that mix, he was traded to  Boston from Baltimore as a prospect for Andrew Miller.. If Rodriguez is not home grown, then neither are Torres, Frazier, or Sheffield, three young men who  came in trades, who the Yankees are calling their own…

Starting pitching is a premium market, Price is a $31M a yr pitcher, Porcello $20M, Sale has a team  friendly contract but Boston had $62M invested in Moncada, the richest signing bonus ever, plus the penalty for money whipping him

If the Yanks want to  resign any of the top FA in 2018, Tanaka, Cueto or Darvish Hal’s budget will be impacted.. That’s why the White Sox are holding any team ransom in a trade for Jose Quintana

14:$0.85M, 15:$1M, 16:$3.8M, 17:$6M, 18:$8.35M, 19:$10.5M club option ($1M buyout), 20:$10.5M club option ($1M buyout)

That’s right Quintana is making Tyler Clippard money this season $6M and what’s left of his entire 5 years/$21M (2014-18), plus 2019-20 options contract is  $35.35M

That’s Brett Gardner / Chase Headley money for an Ace type hurler..

It’s realistic the Bombers will need at a minimum, 3 of their young pitchers to break  camp in 2018 as rotation commodities… Paying one ace and possibly one innings eater will approximately  be Cashman’s budget….

  3. SS snoozeville Pete Kozma & Ruben Tejada.
Reminds me of a story about Casey. Seems back in the day, a reporter was talking to Casey about the chances of a young catcher named Greg Goosen.
Casey said, “ya see this kid here Mr Goosen, fine young man, yes sir, he’s 20 yrs old…..and in another year he has a chance to be 21!”
That’s the ability to get excited about from the afromentioned SS possibilities to replace DIdi….
