Working For the Weekend

with 9 comments

The Bombers may have won the battle sweeping the weekend with  wins over the Phillies on Friday 3-2, the Jays on Saturday 6-4 and yesterday  over the Rays 7-4 in front of 10,350  at GMS, raising their Grapefruit League record to 22-7

For two of the 5 pitchers looking to  secure the open start on April 12th, they may have lost the War…Adam Warren and Bryan Mitchell both pitched their way out of at least the #4 spot in the Bombers still unsettled pitching  rotation with less then stellar performances

Warren tanked on Saturday while subbing for Pineda, he unleashed a mediocre

3.1 innings, 4 hits, 4 runs, 2 BB’s, 2 HR’s, 4, K’s, so he gone..

Warren  will  take his familiar spot in the Bull Pen come April 2nd

Yesterday Bryan Mitchell  was churning along for 2  scoreless innings, thanks in part to  a first inning DP, and a caught stealing by Romine in the 2nd inning.. Unfortunately Mitchell’s house of cards collapsed in the 3rd after getting the first out..

An unfortunate 1 out HBP started his day  reeling out of control, a quick  stolen base, followed by a 1-3 put-out almost saved Mitchell’s bacon, but a pair of 2 out walks, another stolen base, and a clutch  2 out 2 RBI  knock by Miller left him with a standing 8 count..

He threw over 30 pitches in the 3rd, then sat  through  a 4 run Bomber bottom half inning before starting the 4th inning by coughing up consecutive singles… Girardi immediately stopped the bleeding and Yanked the 25 yr old Tar Heel

“That’s just me beating myself,” Mitchell said. “That’s going back to me just putting too much pressure on myself there and trying to make perfect pitches. It stings a little bit right now, especially because I felt good about walks throughout the whole Spring Training. I was controlling them pretty well, I thought.”

Mitchell had a legitimate shot to secure the #4 spot with a good outing, but

3 innings, 6 hits, 3 runs, 2 BB’s, 3 K’s sealed his fate..Forget the bogus 3-1 W/L record, his peripherals and his mound command sunk him

4.57 ERA, permitting 24 hits while striking out 22 against five walks in 21 1/3 innings.

Mitchell’s bug-a-boo, lack of fast ball command, and an inferior 3rd pitch, resulted in more hits allowed  then innings pitched, and an underwhelming 4.57 ERA

The Tea Leaves read: he still cracks the 25 man  roster, but it’ll be out of the bull pen…

There is still  a shot for him  to  make the April 16th  start  vs the Cardinals at home… His biggest ally could be the 40 man roster, he’s on it…

On Friday Luis Severino, who had pitched his way out of starter contention, turned the tables with his best Spring outing to  date, albeit in relief

3 innings, no hits, no  runs, no BB, 5 K’s…

His fast ball  command was on point, he pounded the inside part of the plate, and his off speed pitches including the normally truant change up all  arrived on time

Severino  can nail down the April 12th  start  with a decent showing vs, who  else, the Phillies on Thursday..It’ll be an appointment achieved by default more then merit

1n  13.2 innings this Spring he’s allowed 12 hits, 6 runs, 5 BB, 16 K’s, 3.. thanks to  a few 2 inning puff starts in February he has a 3.86 ERA, teams are hitting .231 off him.. Severino has reverse splits this Spring with much better results vs LHB

7.2 innings, 2 hits, 1 run, 2 Bb’s, 8 K’s BAA 0.80

6 innings, 10 hits, 5 runs, 3 BB, 8 K’s, 2 Hr’s, BAA 3.80

Jordan Montgomery will pitch on Wednesday vs the Blue Jays on the road, he’s MLB Bomber beat  reporter Bryan Hoch’s  choice to  grab the #4 Spot after tossing an impressive 8.1 innings in his last two outings..

Tea Leaves read: Monty will have to pitch light’s out on Wednesday, probably against  a slew of Toronto regulars to be considered.. His biggest  bug-a-boo, the 40 man  roster, he’s Not on it

Hicks / Judge

At the moment Aaron Hicks has outplayed Aaron Judge, that  said, Aaron Judge has had a good Spring…You would think  Spring results would have both players in the starting line-up and Brett Gardner on the pines, but that’s not happening, just yet..

Hicks’ impressive Spring has made shipping Gardner out of town a bit easier, but that’s not happening either…

Hicks is 14 for 49 .286 .375 .946,  with 3 HR’s, 3 doubles and a triple, 8 K’s

His bug-a-boo, he put up  small  sample size platoon splits

VS LHP / 0-11  /2 BB, 3 K’s

Vs RHP /  14 for 38 / .368 .442 .737 1.179 /  5 BB, 5 K’s

Hicks has also played an  exceptional OF and can play  all  3 spots

Judge is 17 for 53 / .321 .390 .509 .899, with 2 HR’s, 1 triple 2 doubles, 12 K’s

Judge hasn’t played as well  as Hicks on defense, but his D is far from  a hindrance in right field

Judge has murdered LHP

8  for 15 / .533 .588 1.133 1.722 / with  2 HR’s, 2 BB’s, 1K

He’s below average vs RHP

.237 .310 .263 .573, / 1 double, 4 BB’s 11K’s

Unfortunately  the Bombers will  face 3 RHP’s to  start  the season, on a new turf surface at the Trop.. Judge wasn’t supposed to  ride the pines, so the Tea Leaves read he starts the season at Triple A ?

That  said, the Yanks only have 4 out fielders, 5 if you count Refsynder who might be gone before the week is out  on the 40 man  roster with Tyler Austin on the DL, so we probably should rip up  the Tea Leaves…It’s Raul Ibanez, Carlos Beltran  revisited if Matt Holliday  ever plays defense,,

Tea Leaves read: Judge cracks the 25 man  roster and Girardi finds cherry picked peripherals in an  effort to get Judge reps vs RHP

The SS spot looks to be going to Ronald Torreyes, with Pete Kozma as the utility… Kozma isn’t on the 40 man roster but once Gregorius returns Kozma gets the DFA.. If somebody grabs him off waivers it was nice knowing you Pete.. If he slips through waivers, he’ll be immediate AAA depth, no harm no  foul

I see more of an issue  starting the season with a God Awful bench consisting of Romine, Kozma, Carter, and one of Hicks or Judge

Patches Carter has been an unmitigated bust  this Spring

 6 for 47 / .128 .241 .213 .454, 1 double, 1 HR, 25 K’s, 7 BB’s

Carter’s ally, he’s on the 40 man  roster, he’s making $3.5M, he hit 41 HR’s in 2016, and Raul Ibanez, who had an intolerable ST with the Yanks in in 2012, but bounced back for a barley tolerable 19 HR’s/ .761 OPS during the regular season

The Tea Leaves read: Carter probably isn’t going anywhere just yet, Bird and Holliday have to prove they  can  stay healthy, and maybe, just maybe once the bell  rings Carter finds  his timing despite considerable reduced playing behind the surging Greg Bird

The Pen

With Mitchell  and Warren stubbing their toes as starters, 2 more spots were most likely filled in the bull pen

The Tea Leaves read: The Yanks will  start  the season  with 8 pitchers in the pen

Chapman, Betances, Clippard Warren are locks, Mitchell, Layne, and possibly Heller and Holder shore up  the final  4.. Chicken Shreve is a long shot

Green, Cessa, Montgomery stay  stretched out at AAA

Ernesto Frieri isn’t on the 40 man and I don’t think he’s done enough to spell Holder or Heller

  1. Nice breakdown Sally Boy! Cogent, well thought out reading of the Tea Leaves.
This ST, I’ve seen the least amount of games in recent memory. BS, work, & more BS has deterred my involvement.
But, from what I’ve read, & the little I’ve seen, does Swami have any idea WTF they are going to do with this less than stellar rotation???
The hitting should be there this year, finally. But, that staff??? We’s in a heap a trouble!!!

    • hey scones…Your schedule makes it impossible to keep track of ST games…. I’ve been working close to wifi so I have either the app radio or the app tv on

That’s why we try to point out what the hell is going on, all subject to change

I have no idea on the pitching except it’s sucked for 3 yr’s and they still manage to win 85 games

The Yanks need 3 kids to step up and make the rotation, by July we should have a better read on what the hell is going on, until then try to steal some games and hope it doesn’t get to far gone by mid May

Gregorius is a big big big big loss

  3. Substitute Torres for Bryant in the fangraphs link dropped

They might not bring Torres up next yr until May service time control is worth a lot of money

Uconn let’s Oregon score a bucket every 20 points
Gabby Williams is the female Oscar Robertson she fills every column

  5. Yanks Go Yard want Quintana
Who the fuck doesn’t want Quintana who are you giving up?

His answer that’s up to the baseball people not me

No Cashman already said the prospect price was too high

Here’s a thought I bet they want 2 of Sanchez Bird Torres Frazier
Then 2 of Kaprielian Sheffield Severino

I bet if Cashman offers Judge
Sheffield, Mateo Chicago hangs up the phone fast

This clown mentions Boston went all in for Sale
    Moncada was blocked in Boston
Pedroia at 2nd base Benintendi in LF Sandoval at 3rd base Bogaerts at SS
The kid is a wing nut with a 40% K rate
    Kopeck is a meat head

Boston already has their core in place NY has yet to develop their core

You wanna give up Sanchez and Torres

Quintana is a pitcher for a contender who is a #2 starter away from a long playoff run
It took the Yanks years to get a prospect crop this good
When the back off Sanchez Torres Bird let’s talk
