Gimme Your Left, Right, Left Right Left

If you ran into  Joe Girardi in a supermarket, or maybe a Dick’s Sporting goods store you might think the Bombers manager was / is an Army or  Marine drill  sergeant..

Girardi is a nerd’s nerd, nothing is out of place, his circadian rhythms would make a Swiss Watch look like an old Timex… He could probably  kick the shit out of 50% of the players in MLB, and is in better physical shape then 100% of the managers he’ll  face this season

Psycho Joe, since he doesn’t have to manage any more old, past their prime Divas, has morphed into Joe the Comedian! You mean he’s  turned over a new leaf and been kind of light hearted, even funny at  times..?

Last week the Bombers were on ESPN where Rick Sutcliffe and some fat guy  teamed up  for ESPN’s version of Fatso  and Fruit Loops, and during Joe the Comedian’s between inning chat with the booth, the three amigos were acting more like a comedic round table then a baseball think  tank  soirée

I was wondering if a more light hearted Girardi would now take a step back from the Analytics that have ruled over MLB’s team building process and game planning ?

That  all came to  an  abrupt halt when we saw his line-up in  last night’s 6-3 loss to  the Tigers at GMS…

“This could very well be similar to our Opening Day lineup,” Girardi said.

“Something we’re going to look at,” Girardi said of the lineup. “I said all along, I thought about breaking up the lefties. We’re going to take a look at it and see what we think. (Ellsbury) has been pretty good in those situations. You put right-handers between all of your left-handers. It makes it harder to navigate through our lineup.”

#Yankees lineup vs. #Tigers
Gardner LF
Sanchez C
Bird 1B
Holliday DH
Ellsbury CF (?!)
Castro 2B
Headley 3B
Hicks RF
Torreyes SS
Tanaka RHP

A disclaimer on that theory

Boston, the 2016 Division Champs  scored 878 runs , last year, the most in baseball. For over half a season their line-up  was Betts (R), Pedroia (R), Bogaerts (R) Grand Papi (L), Ramirez (R)…..for the most part Bradley, Holt, Travis, and Leon, a RHB, Switch Hitter, and two LHB’s  were scattered in at the bottom

On paper the alternate sticking if you will, can prevent unfavorable matchup’s once the starting pitcher is yanked, and in this era, that happens sooner rather then later….

The Red Sox were a run scoring machine, the relevancy of a L/R patterned offense was irrelevant

Boston did finally wake up in August by inserting Betts in the clean up spot behind Grand Papi.. Pedroia and Bogaerts were 1 and 2..

That  wasn’t a move designed around L/R/L/R theory, it was putting Boston’s most productive hitter in the 4 hole, while giving Ortiz protection.. It lengthened the the line up, putting the thunder behind the table setters…

Anyway theories abound, there is one human trait that  can rebuttal the artificial intelligence being spit out by MLB’s metrics apostles, Talent…

The Bombers are starting to acquire a lot of it, and Young Talent is baseball’s most premium value…Unfortunately at  the moment the starting line-up is still being cluttered by a .204 lead off hitter Brett Gardner, and a now middle of the order one time lead off  weapon, Jacoby Ellsbury..

Girardi’s  middle of the line-up Holliday, Ellsbury, Castro  left 11  men on base last night, the 1 run they    knocked in came on a bases loaded  ground out by Ellsbury, at a time when Fullmer couldn’t find the plate with a Google Map..

We have to  wonder where Ellsbury would be batting if Gregorius were not on the DL ? It wouldn’t be 5th, that’s like bringing  a water pistol to  a gun fight.. His OBP and base running  skills have diminished so he’s no longer the ideal lead off hitter

Gardner who is now 33 yr’s old hasn’t been nearly the same player since his 2015 July All Star appearance, a distinction he received by default when Alex Gordon couldn’t suit up due to  an injury.. Brett the Pet is basically a cheaper version of Ellsbury, and like the DoughBoy his numbers are trending the wrong way

Both Gardner and Ellsbury are feeling the youth movement starting to  breathe down their collective  necks.. Gardner’s days are numbered, Ellsbury’s contract leaves the Bombers no choice but to play him for 4 more  years

Sounds like a bad presidential slogan…..

Tanaka lost his scoreless streak two  batters into  the game, he was wild and out of sync per his own critique.. He finally settled in, pitched 5 innings, 3 hits, 2 runs, 1 earned, 2 BB’s, 6 K’s and figured out a way  to keep  the Tigers off the board despite not having his best  stuff

Tanaka’s previous outings have set his bar sky high so  even giving up  the 3 hits felt like  an implosion, walking two  batters was almost alarming…

Betances coughed up  a double and a 2 run HR in his one inning.. After the first  two batters stood him up, he got busy and punched out the side..

Holder pitched a clean inning keeping his bull pen hopes alive

Ernie Frieri coughed up  a 2 run HR, so  a good guess would be, He gone

Higashioka relieved Sanchez who had a base hit and a walk, but Higgy no doubt will  also be gone, probably by today…

The most ridiculous supposed battle still taking place is the Hicks / Judge competition for RF..

Judge smacked a HR that  had a Russian Satellite attached to it once he took over for Hicks who  went 0-2… The Big Man is batting .327, with a .957 OPS,  3 HR’s, there isn’t a NYY fan  alive who  doesn’t want to  see Judge patrolling RF

We see a  problem brewing with the splits and Joe the Comedian’s binder..

Judge murders LHP, and Hicks is 0-11 vs SouthPaws, so  there could be a platoon scenario which doesn’t play into the Judge needs to play  everyday narrative Cashman has championed in his Winter time pressers..

Both Judge and Hicks need to come North, Girardi  will have to figure out a way to find PA’s for the Big Man, nobody’s buying a ticket to  see Hicks, just  ask Brillo Levine

    • Donny i bet Cashman tried hard to flip Gardner but he was a bargain for about 10 minutes when they foolishly extended him.. He’s gone down ever since the 4 yr 52M contract

It’s too late to get a decent return while they still owe him over $23M for 2 yr’s.. Once Frazier can’t be held back, hopefully by June, they’ll need to flip him and eat money if they want to get a prospect back…

They flipped McCann ate money but got this Abreu kid back who is supposed to be throwing bullets…

Like they say there are a lot of pitchers who could win you a Teddy Bear at the Jersey Shore but not many decent starters out there

  3. Biggest day of the week Montgomery Thursday… By the end of the day We’re either gonna be farting through polyester or shitting through cotton… Monty will need to be lights out, that’s a lot of pressure on the kid, if he can keep Toronto off the board on the road, I don’t know what’s keeping him off the 25 man roster by the 17th of April

I can see him going back down to SWB so he can make a few 5 inning starts getting ready for the 17th vs St Louis regardless, but he can put a lot of pressure on Severino who goes tomorrow, we’ll see if Severino continues to act like he just took an Adderall overdose, or will he slow the game down and pitch?

    • Yeah me to
I have a bad feeling Judge gets sent down Refsynder gets the 4th OF gig

Too much chatter about Judge needs to play not sit
It’s not Hicks blocking him it’s Gardner

Another thought they want to give Hicks a chance as a starter
By May he’ll either be a first stringer
or he’ll be exposed as a 4th OF
I think Judges splits vs RHP will hurt him
Ref will play vs the few LHP they’ll face food for thought

  9. • Aaron Judge (Yankees’ No. 4, No. 45 overall) extended his hitting streak to five games with a 2-for-3 day at the plate. Judge has raised his Spring Training average from .273 to .345 during the streak, which has included a trio of multihit games.

  10. everybody keeps mentioning the interview Cashman had with Michael Kay, no word he was on Francesa..

I can see why, Francesa was clueless talking to Cashman, he reads the newspapers and those are the questions he asks, the answers are on the internet, Mike the Dinosaur is lucky he got into radio when he did..

Francesa has no clue what any of the Yankee guys looked like, he has no clue what’s in the minors, Francesa is a clueless star fucker…He knows Bird Sanchez and Torres das it

If he’s as clueless talking College Hoops the NFL and the NBA and he is MLB, he’s running some scam on WFAN

  11. With three off-days over the first 10 days of the regular-season schedule, the Yankees will carry eight relievers and use the built-in time off to rest their first four starters. Both Jordan Montgomery and Luis Severino will be used as starters to begin the season, regardless of whether they’re in the Majors or minors, Hoch adds. Montgomery’s final stop in an unlikely bid for a rotation slot came earlier this afternoon, when he held the Blue Jays to one run over the life of five innings. Hoch also notes that GM Brian Cashman said the team has decided on a fourth starter, but Girardi did not make the announcement today. Montgomery, Severino, Chad Green and Bryan Mitchell are still vying for rotation spots.

  13. Cashman said Severino was going to be a starter, period. He was on with Francesa but I have not heard it yet.
He usually says the same exact thing no matter how many times he is interviewed, nothing.

    • hey Big D yes seems they will start him.. Seems strange that the 4th starter already has been told and Severino still has a game to pitch, suppose he bombs today?

I’ll re-post the links this morning and add there Francesa link thanks
