Baseball and Beyond

Here Come the Judge, SanBino, and Bird Baby Bird!

Well Mike the Parrot Francesa who pretty much recites chapter and verse any and everything his breakfast buds Brian Cashman and Joe Girardi say on his show, is a very happy camper.. Yup, Mikey 10 times is ready to embrace his new Yankees “Stars”, It’s a Francesa  family tradition..

The Big Bloviator has never met a Star player in sports or any occupation  for that matter who’s leg he hasn’t humped, or ass he hasn’t kissed, and now he’s ready to hand  Greg Bird and  Gary Sanchez the keys to  the company store after  both have performed extremely well for a few months in the Majors,  and all of the 2017 Spring Training season

“Anybody who listens to  the show” knows Francesa opines Spring Training is “Fake Baseball” except when it fits his agenda..

When it comes to  handicapping sports events Mike the Parrot  might not always be wrong, but he’s never right…

We should be very alarmed after listening to Francesa’s Pillow Talk  with former Bomber beat  reporter turned MLB Executive Reporter, Marbles Fiensand, yesterday on Francesa’s  normally unlistenable radio show..

Bird is a “Central Casting Yankee” and Sanchez, well  Francesa  hasn’t said much  about Sanchez, except the  best thing to happen to  the SanBino is Bird.. Don’t get me wrong, The Sports  Parrot has certainly purchased a front  row seat on the Sanchez Bandwagon calling him a “Star”, but Bird is the Word for WFAN’s “Varsity” broadcast team

Anyway check out the pillow talk link, it’s not a bad 22 minutes worth of Borsch Belt Comedy

Yesterday Girardi was spokesman  for his Brand’s company, and we now have the first 25 men  who  will  break  camp  as the 2017 NY Yankees..

The media had their money on Aaron Hicks winning the  Right field gig, at least their headlines had implied such a tragedy .. They definitely infuriated the Twitter world  with click  bait over the past 2 or 3 days, so it was a sigh of relief when Joe the Comedian handed Judge the job over the lifetime .223 .299 .346 .644  hitting  Hicks..

Bryan Hoch‏@BryanHoch
I feel like Joe Girardi might have saved Twitter a lot of aggravation if he’d been more clear about the Aaron Judge plans yesterday.

The Yankees and young players aren’t exactly a form fitting glove, in fact if it was up  to the Almighty George Steinbrenner, Mo Rivera, Bernie Williams, Derek Jeter  and Andy Pettitte would have been traded away for some over the hill “Stars” because that’s who Steinbrenner was, more of a circus barker with money then a baseball man..

The modern MLB financial landscape has forced the new Bomber regime to run their show a little different. A fact the Bombers have paid into the Luxury Tax penalty every year since it’s inception in 1997 when the Orioles, Yankees, Indians, Braves, and Marlins were penalized for exceeding the $97M Ceiling, has stuck in the craw of Almighty George’s smartest son Hal for years now.

The target for ending this unsavory distinction is 2018, that’s when the NY accountants  can  finally toss CC Sabathia and Alex Rodriguez’s albatross contracts into the  paper shredder..

The influx of Young talent is a win win for #HalCare, not only will it give the Yanks a more exciting baseball product, it’s  Cheap labor for the bean counters.. Ticket prices at the Mall on Rivers Avenue will still remain outrageous, but now instead of watching dinosaurs roam the Bronx pastures, we’ll  be watching young puppies get paper trained…

The 2017 New York Yankees  aren’t supposed to make much noise this season, most pundits are picking a .500 team, good enough for a 3rd or  4th place AL East Division  finish.. The Baby Bombers on the other hand, especially Sanchez, Bird and now Judge are being tossed into  the deep end of the pool without a life preserver.

If #HalCare wants to repeal it’s gaudy spending ways and not go  after $350 to $400M players like Manny Machado  or Bryce Harper in 2019, then Messieurs Sanchez, Bird, Judge, Frazier, Rutherford, Torres, Sheffield, Kaprielian, Severino, Adams, Montgomery, Green, Cessa and Mitchell need to  develop  sooner rather then later

If they  don’t develop  at all, or just loiter around Replacement Level status, then #HalCare has some decisions to  make, like selling the family business, or once again cleaning  out their present  Baseball Operations department…

Not that there is any pressure on these young men, but in all  due respect to Theo Epstein, 6 years in the making isn’t gonna fly in NY like it did on the North Side of Chicago..

After a fun filled 24-8 Grapefruit League season the honeymoon will come to  an  abrupt halt if the Bombers hit the ground Crawling..

Judge For Yourself

Girardi  and Cashman promoted the Judge / Hicks steel cage match right up until yesterday morning, why, nobody will  ever really know..?

#HalCare had already handed Judge the job in February, all he had to  do  was show a pulse, thankfully the Big Man did more then  that, he showcased a long winter’s worth of hard work, and was a much  much better player then  what  we saw in 27 games last season

I’m not quite sure Cash-Rardi’s  plan is the most beneficial, but Spring Training results only matter when it fits the agenda

“Our plan is to play him every day,” the manager said. “And play Hicks against left-handers.”

Playing Judge everyday is the right move if you want to  develop a young player, you live with the warts, something the Bomber Brass hasn’t done very well in the past..

Hicks has proven  in his 2016  season with the Yanks he can’t hit LHP, despite that  being the reason Cashman  brought him here from Minnesota

.161 .213 .271 .484

He kept up  that  distinction this Spring

Hicks playing vs only LHP is a figment of Cash-Rardi’s imagination, what Hicks should be doing is replacing Brett Gardner on an  everyday  basis… On some days replacing Judge vs tough RHB might not be a bad idea either, because Judge has bad splits vs RHP, in fact 12 of the 13 K’s this Spring were against RHP…

This  message / quote could be Girardi confusing the issue in the media?  For such a Binder carrying member of the Analytic metric fraternity, the Hicks assignment makes little to no  sense… Further proof Gardner’s days in NY could be numbered, or Cashman is still  trying to prove Hicks is something he’s not?

It’ll  sort itself out, this is what 2017  should be all  about, watching the prospects play, and seeing who  fits… Cashman can slowly replace the Gardner’s, Headley’s, Castro’s, and eventually Ellsbury in an effort to be a contender in 2019..

Yesterday Luis Severino’s first inning as the new #4 starter started like the Severino we’ve seen most of the Spring, not good.. Staked to  a 9-0 lead the Dominican Dandelion walked the lead off batter…..

He followed the base on balls with no  fast ball  command,  3 singles, and a run before finally settling down.. Perhaps the very long 9  run first  inning by the lethal Yankee offense  had something to  do  with him being so out of rhythm?

Regardless, Severino  finally started to “trust his stuff” in the 2nd inning and by the 3rd inning he was totally in sync, and when Severino is in rhythm, his pitches have natural  life to  them..

That’s when he induces weak  contact, misses bats, and simply wows the competition.. We’ll have to  remain patient with Severino, it’s gonna be a learning curve for him trying to  slow the game down as a starter…Hopefully he’ll get a feel  for adding and subtracting velocity and do it all while still keeping a solid rhythm to his pace..

“After the first inning, I thought he was pretty good,” Girardi said. “You want all those runs, but to sit as long as he did, it’s kind of hard. I thought his location was pretty good, he threw some good changeups again, moved his fastball in and out. It’s a step in the right direction.”

Up 6-0 in the first inning The SanBino hit a 3 run Bomb that just landed on a Russian Space station, my God that  was hit….It gave the Yanks and Severino  a 9-0 lead

Ronald Torreyes also belted a Tater, and the Bombers completely destroyed a Phillies team that had no interest in competing on their final Spring Training game in Fla..

The Yanks will open the new Atlanta Sun Trust ball park tonight

The game will begin at 7:30pm ET and you’ll be able to watch on YES, MLB Network, and Michael Pineda is the scheduled starter.

  2. We understand the Tommy Layne choice, he’s out of options, haven’t heard a good explanation why Chasen Shreve who still has an option beat out Ben Heller, Service time perhaps? Carrying 3 LHP’s out of the pen, we didn’t know David Ortiz was still playing

Mikey 2 Chins is ready to give Sanchez and extension…. Not a bad idea, but much too early… Sanchez is out of options but that’s irrelevant, what is relevant is Hal getting under the Lux Tax next yr, also the Yanks have 0 pitchers under contract after Tanaka opts out

Who knows how much dough Hal will need to spend to get this pitching staff up and running

even if they develop 3 of Sheffield, Kaprielian, Adams, Montgomery, Green, Cessa, Mitchell, Severino, they’ll still need to buy two more top of the rotation starters even if one is Tanaka

They can’t afford to trade prospects for Quintana who’s contract is a pittance in baseball dollars

So the payroll could get back out of hand in no time.. Until they know what they’re doing pitching wise, the SanBino will have to wait

    Andujar bugaboo his defense
Somebody needs to explain Holder making the team it’s a rule all Cashman teams have to have middle relief gidrools

Shreve holder layne with all the power arms this is what they bring Layne has no options I get that but Holder is the Gardner of relievers
