Braves Chop Yanks in Final Scrimmage

with one comment

Michael Pineda and Dellin Betances were the perfect obliging guests last night as the Atlanta Braves  beat  the Bombers 8-5  at the  “Soft Opening” of their brand new Sun Trust Park in front of what  was tallied as 21 thousand fans

The place looked 3 quarters empty too me, but we later found out  the Braves weren’t open to  the public, just season ticket holders, and invited guest..

It was the Bombers last Spring Training game of the season, they  finished 24-9-1 to  hold the indifferent distinction of having the best record  in the both the Grapefruit and Cactus Leagues..

The Yankees sporting what will be their Opening Day line-up to  start  the game recieved a 4 for 4 night  from Gary Sanchez, 2 for 2 with a double and a run scored, and Greg Bird who also  went 2 for 2 with a HR, 2 RBI’s and a run scored..The only other starter to  register a hit was Ronald Torreyes who  singled in the 5th inning before being replaced by back up Pete Kozma..

Sanchez and Bird are appointment TV, you have to  stop  what you’re doing and watch the young men hit, the rest of the line-up was a cure for insomnia, I’d get used to  that  feeling on most nights…

With the likes of Gardner leading off, Ellsbury batting 5th, Headley and Castro making up  a left right combo in the 6 / 7 hole, and Judge trying to learn how to hit RHP at the MLB level, this  could be a trying experience until  the line-up  turns over again to the Core 2  Sanchez and Bird…

I like the idea of Aaron Judge getting a chance against both left and RHP, but brace yourself for some growing pains  vs tough  righties from  the Big Man, who  was punched out twice, and easily by 100 yr old Bartolo Colon..

This Spring

Judge hit .255 .314 .340 .654 with 14 of the 15 strike outs coming against RHP

The Big Man  destroyed LHP .563 .611 1.125 1.736 with 1 strike out, and 2 HR’s.. The Yanks aren’t trying to  develop  a platoon out fielder with Judge, they  don’t want him sitting the bench, so he’s gonna have to make himself a better hitter and make the adjustments on the fly.. We wanted it, we got it…

Bird gave the Yanks a 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning with his 8th HR of the Spring.. Sanchez was on board after a ringing double to left..

Pineda in mid-season  form coughed up  a two out 3 run Tater in the 3rd inning  to  All Star Freddie Freeman giving Atlanta a 3-2 advantage..

Pineda hurled 5 innings, 6 hits, 3 runs, 1 BB, 6 K’s 1 HR..

“It’s important that he gets that third out and the inning doesn’t continue,” Joe Girardi said. “You hope this year that he gets it, and gets it well. You have to not let the game speed up on you.”

Pineda is in his walk  year, so  the Yanks are hoping he bares down, grows up, and pitches for his next Contract which probably won’t be in NY..Good chance Girardi, Cashman and Rothschild have seen just  about enough of Big Mike who has to be the quintessential  enigma in all of pro  sports

At times PineTop looks like a Cy Young candidate, but like texting and driving, it only takes a split second to wreck a perfect day when you take your eyes off the road.. In Pineda’s case, his bug-a-boo is closing out an inning with 2 outs, he takes his eye off the prize and before you know it, it’s too late

Pineda allowed 27 homers last season, and opponents hit .325 against him with two outs.

Counting Pineda, Girardi shuffled through  8  pitchers in an effort to get everybody some reps

Jonathan Holder who  was a curious choice to  break  camp with the first 25 was a victim of some shoddy defense…The almost 24 yr old  Holder has 3 options left so  that’s one reason he’s coming North, he’s a guy they  can shuttle back and forth, and most likely  if he’s still here in 2 weeks, the pitcher they send back to AAA when by April  16th   they call up  either Chad Green or Jordan Montgomery to fill out the 5th  starter spot

I’m not quite sure the Bombers are giving Jordan Montgomery and even shake  to win that  5th rotation spot..? Chad Green and Montgomery are both lined up  to make the April  16th  start, but Green will be showcasing at AA, while Montgomery with be toeing the rubber at AAA…

Green is on the 40 man roster with 2 options remaining and  should be able to  slice and dice the younger AA players, Montgomery was a non roster invite, and so  far those guys have been overlooked …It might not mean  anything except both  pitchers continue to be lined up for the mid April outing…

Don’t be shocked if Green is your man, not the Big Lefty Montgomery who has looked better then  all of his competition, but is amidst a numbers crunch….

Refsynder picked up  a knock and made two  really good plays at 2nd base

Dustin Fowler who  hopefully we see in the Bronx,  ripped a 2 run Double in the 6th inning to give the Yanks a brief 4-3 lead that Betances and Holder couldn’t hold.. Fowler was also in the middle of a bases clearing bloop double on a pop  up  that just  fell in between 4 players

Miggy Andujar who  was very impressive with the lumber, but a defensive liability with the leather  this Spring, couldn’t complete a tough but doable 6-3 put out with the bases loaded 2 outs in the 6th inning..

A clean pick and throw  would have stopped the bleeding that  started with Betances  giving  up  two  singles to  the only 2 batters he faced,  and Holder who  walked the first man he faced loading  the bases with 2 outs…

Holder for the most part didn’t help himself walking 2 batters

J. Holder relieved D Betances. 4 3
Flowers walked, d’Arnaud to third, Albies to second. 4 3
Demeritte ran for Flowers. 4 3
Suzuki safe at first on error by third baseman Andújar, d’Arnaud scored, Albies to third, Demeritte to second. 4 4
Bonifacio walked, Albies scored, Demeritte to third, Suzuki to second. 4 5
J. Peterson doubled to right center, Demeritte, Suzuki and Bonifacio scored. 4 8
Tuiasosopo flied out to right. 4 8

Holder couldn’t pick  up Andujar and walked in the go  ahead run, then wrecked the game coughing up  a bases clearing double to make it 8-4

In all  fairness to Holder the Andujar error and the bloop  double should have been outs

Carter made it 8-5 with  his 2nd HR of the Spring

Day off today, Season starts tomorrow at 1 PM in Tampa
