The Baby’s Bomb

with 8 comments

Ahh opening day  or Christmas morning on April 2nd if you will !

The YES broadcast was full of optimism, the Baby Bombers were abound with energy, BrickHouse reported there was an  exuberant confidence the winningest Grapefruit League  team would surprise a lot  people this year..

David Cone mentioned there are a lot of question marks about the Yankees pitching staff, but Masahiro Tanaka was the exception and Nibbles was as sure a bet as there was in baseball…

Then the game started, Gardner planted  an expected F/7, The Sanbino hit the hardest exit velocity ball (115MPH) of his career, but Chris Archer’s ankle stopped it for a 1-3 put out. Bird induced a walk showing the mature patience of a 10 year veteran, Holliday looked to beat out an infield single to move the line, but a reviewed call went against him, and only the baseball Gods knew that  would be the highlight of their very long day

Tanaka owned Spring Training with  an 0.38 ERA, he also owned the Rays with a 6-0  record, but the “clean pristine” Spring Training, and the gaudy track record all  went up in smoke from pitch  1 to his final disastrous 67th offering with 2 outs in the 3rd inning

2.2 innings, 8 hits, 7 runs, 2 BB’s, 3 K’s, 2 HR’s, 23.63 ERA

Tanaka  gave up  4 singles ( one a Bird error called a knock) a double, a sac fly and 3 runs over the first  6 batters he faced.. 23 pitches later it was 3-0 Rays after 1 inning..

The Bombers touched Archer for two  runs in the 2nd inning as both  pitchers came out of the gate over throwing and lacking command.

Ellsbury fouled out to left. 0 3
Castro reached on infield single to second. 0 3
Headley singled to left, Castro to second. 0 3
Judge doubled to left, Castro scored, Headley to third. 1 3
Torreyes grounded out to second, Headley scored, Judge to third. 2 3
Gardner grounded out to second. 2 3
2 RUNS, 3 HITS, 0 ERRORS

The big knocks were Headley finding a hole down the 3rd base line, and Judge whacking a hanging slider for an RBI double…

That  was it for the touted New Bomber offense, it looked just like the Old Bomber offense

Tanaka was given a new life with the score now 3-2, but with 2 outs in the 2nd inning he walked Kiermaier, and coughed up  a 2 run HR to Longoria to make it 5-2.. A HR, a double, a single, and an F/8 chased Tanaka to  the showers with  2 out in the third….

“It’s tough,” Tanaka said. “From day 1 from spring training I was looking forward to this day and obviously wanted to go out there and give out a strong performance, but I just wasn’t able to do that.”

Most of the heat for this loss was heaped on Tanaka, as well it should have been, but the Baby Bombers also Bombed, big time..

Gary Sanchez went 0-5, with 1 punch out, he left 5 men on base, and a throwing error that  allowed the 7th run to plate in the 3rd inning….

In the 7th inning the Yanks managed to load the bases on Archer, but after barely missing a bases clearing double that landed about foot to the wrong side of the right field foul line, he rolled over an 89 MPH slider to SS to take the air out of the room  for the Bombers

Sanchez much like Tanaka looked a tick over anxious, the usual slow clock Sanchez possesses was a bit out of whack… El Gary looked like he was back to  expanding the strike zone, when Sanchez is in rhythm and slows the game down, normally he would have poked Archer’s slider to  right field, it was agonizing watching him roll over the offering  for a 6-3 put out…

Greg Bird went a very quiet 0-4, with a BB, and a punch out

Aaron Judge after starting his day  with an RBI double, in the 2nd inning went 1-4, double, 1 RBI, 1 K.. The punch out came in the 7th inning after Castro  and Headley started the inning with base hits but Archer despite allowing 3 singles  to Oldies Castro Headley and Gardner managed to stump Judge, Hicks, and Sanchez…

Oldies But Goodies

Castro had a great day going 3 for 4

Headley was also on his game, 3 for 4, with a bunt single  that beat  the shift

Gardner 1-4

Sanchez, Bird, Holliday and Ellsbury 2-3-4-5 in the line-up  went 0-16 with 5 punch outs, leaving a combined 8 men on base

You’re not winning many games when your Ace can’t get out of the 3rd inning, and the new middle of the line-up  can’t buy  a base hit

  1. First time in franchise history Yankees have lost 6 straight Opening Day games.

Chase Headley hit .319 vs the shift as LHB last year …

    Billy Witz @billywitz

Well, Headley is just killing the shift today. Three hits — all between the third baseman and the line.

Masahiro Tanaka is only Yankee Opening Day starter ever to give up 7+ ER and get fewer than 10 outs.

  2. Another year to get excited for opening day only to look for something else to watch by the 4th inning. Tin-ahcker was unhittable this spring and according to instagram/twitter/fb they should just give him the cy young hes so good! Same shit different toilet losing to the scumbag devil rays who other than Longoria dont have 1 guy in their starting 9 that could make the Yankees. I was happy to see Judge drive in a run but Sanchez looked over anxious swinging at balls in the other batters box. Now we have Cant count on Sabathia and jerkoff Pineda up next to at best hope for a 1-2 start. Back up the Trucks!!!!!!

Yes very frustrating afternoon, Tanaka is the one game a week you need to win….Let’s see if Sanchez and Bird can make some adjustments, if anything I saw thgem do that ABN to AB this ST… then again ST didn’t help yesterday….

Stop by more often if you get the time always great to hear from you..

    • hey bondsie, I hope you straighten him out, you’re the only guy i know who can speak Japanese, just don’t talk to him the way you talk to the madam he might think you’re letting him off the hook

This guy Ricky Ricardo ought stick to the Lucy Show, because him and Beningo talking about the Yankees is like the Little Rascals holding a Physics summit at Yale University

Ricardo is on the Spanish speaking broadcast, he doesn’t like Sanchez batting 2nd, wants him in 4 or 5 hole a traditional RBI spot, can’t knock runs in from the 2 hole he said

dude Sanchez came up with 5 men on base yesterday, he left 5 men stranded…..

“He doesn’t look comfortable in the 2 hole”

he looked pretty comfortable this Spring, maybe he sped the real game up no matter where he was hitting..

We get the old school philosophy it has merit, but Maddon had Schwarber leading off and Bryant batting 2nd, Rizzo 3rd, Bryant whiffed 3 times, just saying, these managers are trending the best hitters to the top of the line up, you only lead off a game once Ricardo…..Zobrist 4th Russell 5th Contreras 6th

If Sanchez bats 4th or 5th he might never see any body on base with Gardner and Ellsbury up there…

Sanchez had plenty of opportunities to wreck that game he just came up short.

  4. Mets just won a good game.
    Atlanta looked heartless
Thor is the Goods no doubt,,
Hysterical DP to end the game too.

    • Mets did good Donny you’re right
6 inning Thor and some good relievers

He was certainly better then Tanaka

      Red Sox checked their boxes
      Porcello and 3 relievers prevail
Benintendi with a 3 run HR
They get solid pitching and their stud rookie pulls through

I’m still laughing over Berry winning most outstanding player in the tournament

  5. Francesca today
If Joel Berry is playing NC will lose because he has a bad ankle. Lol
    Hahaha

Joel Berry, injured ankle and all, was the star for Carolina. He kept the Tar Heels in the game with 22 points two days after going 2-for-14 from the field against Oregon. He was the only North Carolina player who could hit outside shots in the first half, and pulled them through a tight second half, too. Berry and defense won the game for the Tar Heels.
