What’s Wrong With This Picture?

Chase Headley has been a big star for the Yanks, at least for two  games, and all that  was needed to  achieve that distinction was for him to lay down a bunt that beat a defensive shift in a Game 1 Loss..?

For veteran players  hitting them  where they  ain’t in an effort to beat  the insufferable defensive shifts appeared to be more difficult then understanding what happened to Nibbles Tanaka on Sunday afternoon?

So far so good, Chase Headley is 4-for-6 when putting balls in play vs the shift (doesnt include HR, K, BB at-bats)

Last year it took Chase Headley a dozen games to get five hits. This year, it’s taken just two. Headley didn’t homer until May 12 during his horrendous start to last season, but he went deep in Game No. 2, in the sixth inning of the Yankees’ 5-0 win over Tampa Bay on Tuesday night.

After a huge let down on Sunday, the Bombers behind  5 shutout innings from CC Sabathia, and 4 scoreless from the Bull Pen won their first game of the 2017 season

The Yanks started the 2017 campaign with Joe Girardi reading the remaining veterans on his team a riot act prior to Sunday’s Opening Day.. He pleaded with them to step  up  and help  the touted youngsters, after all  they  can’t do it alone.

Copy That Joe, last night in the 3rd inning  with the score knotted at 0-0, back up SS Ronald Torreyes hit the first Bomber HR of the season, a bullet that  traveled 400 into the left field seats.. The Big Fly came off an 86 MPH cutter that Odorizzi set on a Tee for the Little Man and it followed an Aaron Judge single..!

The Yanks kept loading the wagon in the 3rd making it 3-0 after a Gardner double and a an RBI two bagger off the Trop Roof by Matt Holliday

Chase Headley made it 4-0 in the 6th  with a 417 foot Bomb to center field.

In the 8th inning Ellsbury smacked an opposite field double, and who  else but Chase Headley drove him home with another Shift beating RBI single to  cap  the scoring at  5-0

The Core Bore

After amazing Spring Training results we came into  the regular season thinking Sanchez and Bird were gonna be the straws that  stirred the Yankees drink. Well so far after 2 games they’ve been more like the melted ice that dissolved to  the bottom off the glass

In a very small  sample size the dynamic duo is 1 for 18, the only hit came off Bird’s bat last night, a chalk line  bloop double down the left field line.

Sanchez has looked in between on most of  his AB’s, he has hit the ball hard 3 times with nothing to show but a bruise on Chris Archer’s shin and a metric leap in Evan Longoria’s defensive metrics..

Last night he was punched out twice by low 90’s fast ball’s, albeit placed in perfect spots at the top of the strike zone.. Both Bird  and Sanchez will need to make an adjustment, either lay off those pitches or get on top of them, but so  far the results have favored the Rays scouting report.

Aaron Judge the third amigo in this Bomber kiddie core is 2 for 8 with a double, an RBI and 2 strike outs..

Sanchez (3) Bird (2) Judge (2) have been punched out 7 times in 26 AB’s, 27%.. It’s still  good to  see all  3 getting their feet wet

Yanks Ride CC

CC Sabathia had as bad a Spring Training as you can have and still keep  our job.. Nibbles Tanaka looked like Cy Young who BTW  was the best  pitcher to never win  a Cy Young ..

In the first  two  games, the roles have reversed, Tanaka couldn’t get out of the 3rd inning against a bad hitting team, while Sabathia won’t be mistaken for Bumgarner or Kershaw, but he did what  you expected from Tanaka, 5 innings no runs…

“That’s the thing I have to be able to do, command the inside part of the plate to throw my changeup and my slider out there,” said Sabathia, who stated that he didn’t shake off Gary Sanchez once in just their second time working together. “We did a good job of that early today.”

It’s early in the season, and delusions of grander entered the  YES booth in the early portion of the 5th inning when it looked like Sabathia  might squeeze 5 innings and change, possibly 6 if all  went well in his first  start..

David Cone got a little ahead of himself after two  relatively quick outs thinking Sabathia could give the Bombers some length… You cringed after hearing the jinx factor at  work

Sure enough it took  6 pitches to get two outs, but 12 to close out the frame after walking the #9 hitter Bourjos  and coughing up  an infield single to Souza the lead off batter..

The pen quickly got up, but Sabathia was able to induce a quick comebacker against Kevin Kiermaier who had a big day  in game 1 vs Tanaka..

Sabathia’s final line 5 innings, 3 hits, no  runs, 2 BB’s, 3 K’s, nice job..

The Poison Pen

Bryan Mitchell threw a quick  9 pitch 1-2-3 6th inning, two  ground ball outs and an F/9

Tyler Clippard had a 15 pitch  scoreless 7th inning with 2 punch outs

Girardi  tried to get cute bringing in Kyle Holder with a 5-0 lead in the 8th inning.. That’s all  well  and good  trying to  save Betances bullets but Girardi  insists on using middle relief pitchers he really has no  trust in, and you know the leash is very short, so  why do it?

Sure enough, Brillo Levine’s favorite punching bag was called on once again to  save Girardi’s and Levine’s dumb ass..

Holder started out good with a punch out, but two soft singles later Girardi had Betances up and in the game with 2 on and 1 out… Betances walked the first batter he faced and now a 5-0 laugher was morphing  into  a bases loaded white knuckler

Betances kicked his game into  the next gear by punching out Weeks, then inducing a ground ball out to  first base..

Dellin Betances with bases loaded since 2014:

34 batters faced
17 strikeouts
3 hits allowed

Chappy closed out the 9th with an  over powering 1-2-3 inning, punching out 2 of the 3 batters he faced

So  far the pen has pitched 9.1 innings of scoreless baseball.. Sans Holder 8 innings 3 hits no  runs

With Holder, 9.1 innings 7 hits and a big Hold by Betances bailing Holder and the Yanks out, again……

Memo To Brillo Levine, Saves, that’s  your barometer valuing relievers, Really dude ?

The Yanks made 4 great  defensive plays on the night

Castro on the first  batter of the game, Ellsbury a spectacular catch in the first inning against the fence, Torreyes a terrific pick and throw, and Headley a great  grab on a bullet destined to land in the left field corner for at least a Double..

the Whole 9

  5. Cy Young is the best pitcher to never win a Cy Young. I like that. Succinct & to the point.

  6. Regarding Headless Headley Lamar,,
Our “ream em then reap” theory took longer than ever with ol #12 but if it is kickin in,, Good !!

    • Lol what’s up fellas

We thought you went off the deep end Donny

Don moscone had arranged a sit down
On his turf, where you would be safe

Poor Bird he’s having AzFL flash backs

With all these kids in the minors knocking on the door Ellsbury Headley and Castro are waking up

Girardi Pena Cashman they’re all saying Sanchez’s most important job is defense and running the pitching staff
What’s he doing batting 2nd then.. I’m not saying replace him, I like the new school, best hitters to the top of the lineup, they all get up in the first inning
They get more PA’s, etc but
It’s tough to be a great catcher and your best hitter with only 2 months experience
I hope they stick with it, but won’t be surprised if Joe fucks with it when DD gets back, especially if the 2 and 3 hole are struggling

    • It’s gonna be nice when we don’t have to watch this gidrool in Pinstripes anymore
This guy is 28 yrs old, he is what he is, a pitcher with a 4 plus ERA

This dog won’t hunt he’s gonna kill one of our bull pen dudes

Keep the bitch in there let him get his ass kicked
      he’s killing Sanchez’s caught stealing %

      April 5, 2017 at 8:01 pm

  9. I think it’s time for Pinetop to go on the Tessio ride. This guy has no focus.
Not even for old times sake…

    April 5, 2017 at 8:15 pm

    • Lol

      April 5, 2017 at 9:13 pm

  10. SanBino’s path to the ball looks a bit out of whack somehow he found a hole through the shift
    He’s seen 15 pitches the kid’s grinding

#2 #3 are 2 for 22, tough to win with shabby pitching, impossible if the 2 key spots in the lineup are hitting .091

    April 5, 2017 at 8:24 pm

  11. Sale is slicing up the Pirates
    It’s 49 degrees
Taillon is hanging with him but he’s on the ropes in the 5th

    April 5, 2017 at 8:35 pm

    • Pineda needs to get through 2 more innings but he’s at 60 pitches with no outs in the 4th

These chump starters are gonna kill the pen

      April 5, 2017 at 8:39 pm

  12. Chicken Shreve up in the 4th inning

    Katie Sharp‏ @ktsharp
Most 2-out Runs Allowed in 2016:

    Anibal Sanchez 57
    Michael Pineda 52
    James Shields 49

    Katie Sharp‏ @ktsharp
Last year Michael Pineda allowed 80 2-out hits, 9 more than any other pitcher.

    Katie Sharp‏ @ktsharp
That’s just the 2nd time Ellsbury has hit a game-tying HR with Yankees (also May 1, 2014 vs Mariners)

    April 5, 2017 at 8:45 pm

    • 3.2 innings
Joe needs to lower the adderall dosage
I’d be sick of watching him cough up 2 out runs too

      Below replacement level performance

Tanaka 2.2 innings CoCo Puff 5 innings
      11.2 innings out of a possible 27

      That’s some power rotation

      April 5, 2017 at 8:56 pm

  13. That’s it. I don’t want to hear in Genious Joe’s post game presser that yeah, he had really only one bad inning……he battled…..he kept us in the game…
Bullshit! For 3 years we’ve been watching this guy lose focus, 2 out hits, 2 strike hits, pine tar. Enough!! George woulda run him outta town by now.
But who to replace him with??
    Mitchell? Cessa? Green? Don B??
    Dat’s da problem…

    April 5, 2017 at 9:00 pm

    • The Tessio ride might be all that’s left
Cashman would like to flip him at the deadline plus they owe him $7m

If they can get a few good months out of him they can maybe sucker a desperate GM who thinks he’s good
Might get a prospect for him

      April 5, 2017 at 9:29 pm

  14. Right now, I’d be satisfied getting a bag of balls for him!
So much talent & a 2 cent head.

    April 5, 2017 at 9:53 pm

  15. The Baby Bummers are 4 for 37

    terrible AB by Sanchez

Seems like Bird comes up to bat with 2 strikes

It’ll be good to get the kids out of Tampa these change ups and spotted fast balls are a tough lesson so early in the season
Too bad they couldn’t play the Phillies for a week or two then start to face MLB pitching
    Francesa really jinxed these kids

    Great job by Warren
    0-8 with RISP, deadly

    April 5, 2017 at 10:10 pm

    • Bryan Armen Graham‏ @BryanAGraham
A baseball season has started without Vin Scully or Connie Mack working in some level of it for the first time since 1885.
