It was Jordan Montgomery Wednesday in the Bronx and nobody does Pomp  and Circumstance like the  YES Network.. They  covered the 6-6 Lefty from Sumter South Carolina from head to  toe in anticipation of his first Big League start.. We were fortunate to have the great David Cone in the booth so every move Montgomery made was more like breaking down  film then a baseball telecast!

Montgomery has excelled at  every level  despite not being labeled a stud (4th  round draft choice) unlike Blake Snell who was a first  round high School  draft choice back in 2011

Cone’s description of Montgomery: Simple clean delivery,  his mechanics are compact, if he misses location  he  still induces  whiffs because his stuff  (4 pitches) is deceptively that good.

Montgomery’s Yankees career couldn’t have started any better, he whiffed the first  two Rays batters  Souza and Kiermaier rather easily before the baseball God’s reminded him this game isn’t that  easy

With  2 outs and a very quick  tempo set up  by his personal catcher Kyle Higashioka,  Montgomery picked up  2 quick  strikes on Longoria who he punched out twice in Spring Training, and it sure looked like he was going to secure the hat  trick ..

He just missed  a called strike 3 that  may have scraped some of the black off the outer half, but he wasn’t in Scranton anymore and Longo  got the call..  It looked like he over threw  the next 4 pitches and Longoria was able to grind a 2 out walk

..Montgomery quickly went 0-2 on  Rickie Weeks before  a  1-2 fast ball  got too much of the plate an landed 390 feet from home plate for a 2 run HR… You could hear  a pin drop in the Bronx, the day  dream  was over, and the grind to  4.2 innings began…

After a 22 pitch  first inning, he went 1-2-3 for an 11 pitch  2nd… A single and a HBP slowed his tempo way  down  and Montgomery was in his first  grind-em-out inning..He prevailed after striking out Longoria and Weeks, but his pitch count after throwing 16 pitches was now up  to 49 after 3..

Dickerson was punched out to  start  the 4th inning, and Montgomery caught a break  when Norris was thrown out by Hicks trying to  stretch  a single into  a double.. That play loomed large after a 2 out walk an another single followed the 7-4 put out.. A pop up  to first  base ended the threat  and the game remained 2-0

With 70 pitches thrown after 4 innings, a lead off double in the 5th wasn’t what  you were looking for, but Montgomery showed the guts of a burglar as Kiermaier and once again Longoria struck out swinging.

At 89-61 pitches and 2 outs in there 5th inning  Girardi  yanked the kid for Bryan Mitchell and his day was over.

4.2 innings, 5 hits, 3 runs, 2 earned, 2 BB’s, 7 K’s, 1 HR, 3.86 ERA

If you were looking for a gaudy pitching line like Pineda tossed on Monday, you were disappointed.. If you were looking for a very good young Lefty starter  to  pitch  every 5 days and grow into  the gig, then  you were in the right place.. See you in 5 Monty

pitch fx

Montgomery left with a 3-0 deficit, while Snell was cruising through 4 innings giving up only 1 hit and 1 BB..

All  that  changed in the 5th inning when the Bombers finally got to  the young  Tampa Bay lefty for 2 runs

Headley singled to center. 3 0
Judge walked, Headley to second. 3 0
Higashioka grounded into fielder’s choice to third, Headley to third, Judge safe at second on error by shortstop Beckham. 3 0
Kozma popped out to second. 3 0
Ellsbury fouled out to third. 3 0
Hicks walked, Headley scored, Judge to third, Higashioka to second. 3 1
Díaz relieved Snell. 3 1
Judge scored, Higashioka to third, Hicks to second on wild pitch by Díaz. 3 2
Holliday walked. 3 2
Carter popped out to shortstop. 3 2

Despite Snell’s pedigree and his clean 4 innings he ended up, like Montgomery  tossing 4.2 innings unable to get through 5, but he did leave e with  a 3-2 lead

The Yanks were able to take advantage of the Rays reliever  underbelly in the 6th inning grabbing a lead they  would never relinquish

Castro reached on infield single to first. 3 2
Headley singled to right center, Castro to second. 3 2
Judge singled to center, Castro scored, Headley to second. 3 3
Higashioka bunted into fielder’s choice to third, Judge out at second, Headley to third. 3 3
Cedeño relieved Díaz. 3 3
Gardner hit for Kozma. 3 3
Gardner safe at first on throwing error by pitcher Cedeño, Headley scored, Higashioka to third. 3 4
Torreyes ran for Gardner. 3 4
Morrison at first base. 3 4
Ellsbury singled to center, Higashioka scored, Torreyes to third. 3 5
Ramírez relieved Cedeño. 3 5
Hicks grounded out to second, Torreyes scored, Ellsbury to second. 3 6
Holliday grounded out to third. 3 6

They  tacked on 2 more  runs in the 7th,  with  2 outs Aaron Judge smacked a 435 foot Bomb to  dead central and the Yanks were up  8-3

Bryan Mitchell  who  relieved Montgomery gave up  an unearned  inherited run  in the 5th thanks to  a Castro  error,  pitched a clean  6th, and handed the ball off to Tyler Clippard who pitched a clean 7th

Up 8-3 Girardi  sat  the earners in the pen and brought in the Gidrool Squad Penny Layne and  Kyle Holder

1.1 innings, 4 hits, and 1 run later Aroldis Chapman  was called on to  nail down the last two outs for the Bombers 4th win of the season and their 3rd in a row

What  started as Montgomery Wednesday, ended as Judgement day  after #99  picked up  2 more hits, his 3rd HR in the last 3 games, and 3 RBI’s

A stinging RBI single in the 5th, and a Monster HR Bomb in the 7th turned into Judge’s coming out party in the Bronx..

Since Sanchez’s injury in Baltimore, 3 games ago, Judge is 6 for 11, 3 HR’s, 4 RBI’s and only 1 K his early season line

  6. tough break for Gardner, dude is tough after getting knocked out he still crawled to the base to touch it…. No 10 day DL so they’ll go short handed… Wonder if Bird gets back in there tonight, reports are the ankle is fucked pretty good.. also with Fowler and Frazier not on the 40 man Mason Williams would be Gardner’s replacement so there is no hurry to 10 day DL him

We already know what Williams is AAAA depth

  7. Some tough love from the Jersey Boys who could use an editor.. In some of their articles they have wrong names, guys playing wrong positions, but they do drop more content then anybody else, but you have to be carful what they write

Not sure i’d call Sabathia a stud but whatever.. they certainly aren’t enamored with Bird and Sanchez.. Actually until Bird can stay healthy do we have the new Nick Johnson only with Hr ability?

      April 13, 2017 at 1:32 pm

    • I take back all the bad things I said about Aaron Hicks-lol I double all the bad things I said about Joe “the Idiot” Espada, worst 3b coach in the majors. Severino was incredible,Betances was houdini. It was a good night for ex-Yankee pitchers,Phil Hughes is now 2-0,ex-gidrool Swarzak got a win tonight. Very glad they swept the Rays,I just hate them!!!

  13. hahaha hey Big D great night for Hicks and Headley not scoring on that Romine double was crazy.. Between Headley running like he’s carrying a piano and Espada coaching like he’s Ray Charles it’s not what we were looking for

Hughes and Swarzak good for them, I hope Cashman doesn’t get any bright ideas, we’ve seen enough of Swarzak.. Hughes makes too much money so we don’t have to worry about him..

I thought maybe you softened up on the Rays since Maddon left, I see that’s not the case lol
