Two Rays Of Hope

with 16 comments

It’s a Mickey… It’s a Bernie… It’s an Jorge… It’s a Tex…No, it’s a Hicks !!!!

Yes Aaron Hicks one of Cashman’s first trades in his efforts to make the Bombers younger, more athletic, and cheaper to  keep, finally paid back  some dividends ….

Last night the much maligned out fielder slammed Two Taters, one from each  side of the plate to back Luis Severino’s 7 inning , 5 hit, 2 run  Gem…

Hicks who occasionally makes  some noise as a Bomber, but it’s usually on defense, kept the Aaron’s HR streak alive at 4 in row.. With Aaron Judge backing off the Taters,  Aaron Hicks picked up  the slack knocking in all  3 runs in the Bombers  3-2 sweep of the Rays

Hicks went Big Fly in the first inning to give the Yanks a 1-0 lead, then capped off the night with his second Dinger in the 7th..

With one out and the Yanks down 2-1, Torreyes reached on infield single to shortstop, after an Ellsbury fielders choice made it 2 outs, Hicks homered to left (373 feet) giving  the Yanks a lead Betances and Chapman made stand up..

The win pushed the 5-4  Bombers over the .500 mark  for the first  time this season..

Severino after 2 sluggish innings to  start the game, finally got in rhythm in the third inning and he and Romine set a great tempo that  carried the 23 year old Dominican for a full  7 innings…Securing  21 outs  has been rarified air so  far this season for Bomber starters, until last night only Pineda’s 7.2 innings on April  10th vs the Rays have had that  distinction

Severino’s line

7 innings, 5 hits, 2 runs, 2 BB’s, 11 K’s , 2 HR’s

Betances immediately allowed 2 runners to  reach  base in the 8th on a lead off walk to  the back up  catcher Sucre, and a single by Dickerson, leaving men on first  and third with  no outs

Betances finally woke up,  kicked it into high  gear, and punched out the next  2 batters, before a weak ground ball that he fielded himself, ended the inning

Chappy was overpowering in the 9th  To  close it out

In a season where the Bomber front office is  looking for young players to  step up, Severino  and Hicks provided that ray of hope last night…

The St Louis Cardinals, the team  that invented baseball will be in the Bronx this weekend..

  3. Ellsbury swipes second easily, running on a 3-2 changeup and capitalizing on a one-hop throw from Molina. He has 83 SBs as a Yankee.
