Rise of the Romine Empire

with 16 comments

The Yanks won  their 5th in a row last night with a 4-3 nail biter over the team who invented baseball  the St Louis Cardinals

It’s not who  you play, it’s when in MLB, and at  the moment the Cardinals are a 3-7 mess.. Don’t take the  .300 winning percentage and being in last place in the  Central Division to  the bank, they  won’t be there long..

“We’re just going through a little rut right now. We’re just trying to figure out a way to turn it around. Once we do, we know how good of a team we can be.” — Wong, on the Cardinals’ 3-7 start to the season

Come on down  Kolten Wong, Michael Wacha and the Cardinals version of Joe Espada, third base coach Chris Maloney, welcome to the Bronx

Wacha wasn’t sharp in the bottom of the first inning coughing up the 2-0 lead Matt Carpenter awarded him  in the top of the first, when Castro tied the game 2-2 with a HR of his own

Wacha   lost the lead in 3rd inning allowing  the unassuming Romine to  take him deep in the third giving the Yanks a 3-2 lead

Wong made  bad throw in the 5th inning that allowed the Yanks 4th  run to  score after Ellsbury singled and Headley doubled to right.. The errant throw to  the plate resulted in Ellsbury scampering home giving the  Yanks a 4-2 lead they would never relinquished

The Cards should have tied the score in the 9th after Grichuk walked, and pinch hitter Jose Martinez whacked a double to left field, but third base coach Chris Maloney fortunately held the runner  at third.. Chapman banked the gift by inducing Fowler to end the game with a 4-3 putout

The Yanks on the other hand are the polar opposite, winning 5 in a row despite their franchise player Gary Sanchez going down with a muscle strain and Mike Francesa’s “can’t miss central  casting Yankees Star” Greg Bird picking up a severe case of Stage Fright

No  worries on Sanchez, Austin Romine has handled the pitching staff in 4 of the 5 wins  like an old pro, and last night he went across traffic in the third inning belting a 370 foot HR into  the right field seats to give the Yanks a 3-2 lead

Greg Bird on the other hand might be two more days of futility away from taking over for  Ji-Man Choi at AAA Scranton if he doesn’t show even the slightest signs of life with the bat

After last night’s 0-3 with a walk, Bird is now 1 for 23 with  11 K’s, what’s alarming, he looks worse then  the line if that’s even possible…

After a 1-4 start where not one of the Bombers starters made it past 5 innings, Romine has put down the fingers in Sabathia’s 6 innings on April 9th, Pineda’s 7.2 innings gem on   April 10th, Severino’s 7 inning revival on the April 12th, and last night he guided Tanaka through  6.1 innings, his first voyage past the 5 inning mark  all  season

“Game calling by far,’’ pitcher Adam Warren said of Romine’s best attribute. “We started working at Double-A and I hardly shake him off. He knows swings and he knows hitters.’’

Tanaka was better last night, but still not looking like a pitcher that  should opt out of a  3 yr’s $67M guaranteed contract..With his suspect elbow, and his questionable efficiency working on  4 days rest, unless he picks up his game considerably, who would be willing to give Tanaka a 5 or 6 year deal in the $160M range?

Joe Girardi was a tad peeved. The Yankees manager had fielded his third question in five minutes on the poor start of his ace Masahiro Tanaka. So Girardi jabbed back.

“I could say, ‘Oh, no, the world’s falling down,'” Girardi said. “Or you could say, ‘He’s got a track record, my best guess is that he’s going to find it.'”

Tanaka has been getting better with  each outing so possibly Girardi could be correct.. After a shaky first inning Tanaka finally got in rhythm in the 2nd inning

He wiggled out of a double and a walk jam in the 3rd inning, then set down  10 in a row until an infield single against the shift opened the 7th.. A walk and a ringing double ended his night with one out in the 7th.

6.1 innings, 5 hits, 3 runs, 2 BB’s, 5 K’s, 1 HR, 8.36 ERA

Tyler Clippard cleaned the inning with two loud fly ball outs to preserve the slim 4-3 lead..

Betances allowed a walk in the 8th, but he also  punched out the side in a dominating inning

Chappy got into  and out of trouble in the 9th, allowing a walk and a double, but no  runs…It was his third day in row so  good chance we won’t be seeing him today…

  2. Bird’s gig might be safe, there isn’t anybody at AAA tearing it up to replace him

Refsynder is off to a terrible start, Choi isn’t much better, Fowler is also hitting the skids …Railriders lost for the 4th time to Buffalo

  4. From the Peanut Gallery, I’d like to put my 2 cents in. I mean, that’s what we do here, no?Praise them when they excell & trash them when they don’t. It’s as old as the game itself. Just not as old as Don B’s brownie recipe.
There’s been a lot of consternation over the horrendous start being authored by one Greg Bird. And believe me, he has stunk up the joint!
But, today, I’m gonna cut him some slack.
We’ve played 10 games. Bird missed a few, due to a barking ankle (since the end of ST), & a stomach bug that can mess you up.
He raked in ST, & there’s no reason to think he won’t eventually put it all together again.
We heard about him for a few years. He was being touted as the best pure hitter the Yanks have developed since Mattingly. Those are big shoes to fill.
He came up late in 2015, & impressed the hell outta everyone, with his poise & play. Lost last year to injury, raked in ST this year, & then befell to the afromentioned injury & bug.
    Which brings us to here.

I don’t think this guy is days away from getting his mail in Scranton/Wilkes Barre. I think the Yanks know exactly what they have & will give him a very long leash. I believe the ankle is not yet 100%. I think the stomach bug is still lingering.
Let’s give him some more time, certainly more than a truncated 10 games.
I’ll bet in 3 months from now, we’ll all be saying WTF were we talking about in the middle of April??

  8. Agreed. He does look lost & without a map. If he is hurt, get him outta there. Right now, I’d sit him against some tough lefties. Give him a blow for a day & let him recompose himself. But, other than that, I’d keep running him out there till he fights his way back.

  10. Yanks are 4th in baseball, 2nd in the AL in run support per game with 5

Texas leads all of baseball with 5.6

    Boston is 17th 4.4

  11. Yanks have 13 inherited runners on base when a pitcher leaves the game, 2 have scored 15%

Yanks are 9th best in that percentage

  12. We’re all rooting for Bird but he doesn’t look right
    Axisa
And finally, another tough day for Greg Bird, who went 0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts. He is now 0-for-18 with two walks and eleven strikeouts in his last five games. Also, when Bird grounded out in the seventh inning, he could only jog down to first base. If he’s hobbled that much by the ankle, why in the world is he playing and not on the disabled list?
