Pinstripes Pound the Pirates

with 11 comments

The Yanks turned what looked to be another lethargic offensive performance into  a 11-5 laugher, no thanks to  the manager, and big thanks to Chris Patches Carter’s 3 run pinch hit  HR, Pirates 2nd baseman Adam Frazier, and last but not least the inept Pirates Out Field..

De Fence Has Holes

The Pirates are tied for the National League lead with 16 errors. In 17 games this season, they have allowed 15 unearned runs — including five on Saturday.

Even  with Marte in the out field, the Pirates blew a few games vs Boston in the opening series of the year, misplayed fly balls were the main culprit… Yesterday John Jaso, last seen  catching and faking first base in  the AL was inserted in right field

In the 6th inning with the game tied 3-3, Torreyes smacked a fly ball  single to  right field, Jaso misread the ball and made an ill-advised  late dive after it. He couldn’t stop the ball, which hopped over him and allowed both Aaron Judge and Greg Bird to score, giving the Yankees a 5-3 lead.

The more critical mistake came in the eighth inning. The Pirates rallied to tie the game in the sixth off Jonathan Holder and Tyler Clippard…

Felipe Rivero breezed through a perfect seventh. Rivero quickly retired the Yankees’ first two hitters in the eighth, then Austin Romine hit a ground ball near second baseman Adam Frazier — a utility man thrust into a more prominent role this season.

Frazier let the ball  go through his legs, Torreyes followed with a  single and Patches Carter went Big Fly to  give the Yanks an 8-5 lead.. The Bombers tacked on  2 more runs thanks to  Andrew McCutchen misplaying an Ellsbury fly ball..

A wild pitch, and consecutive doubles by Hicks and Headley blew the doors open 10-5..

Pine Topples

Pineda gave up  3 runs in 5 innings, in a so-so outing… After the Bombers took a 5-3 lead in the 6th, Girardi pinch hit for Big Mike and he was now finished after only  73 pitches.. No  worries, maybe the long top of the 6th  had something to  do  with it and  you figure at this point Girardi  goes into his prevent defense, hands Bryan Mitchell  the ball in an effort to get it to Betances then  Chappy who were both  well  rested

Pineda’s final line

5 innings, 5 hits, 3 runs, 2 BB, 6 K’s, 2 HR’s ….

Leaky Pen

Girardi  tried to  steal  an inning with one of the two Gidrools  Cashman insists on keeping in the pen, Holder and Layne… Jonathan Holder did get 2 quick outs, but he couldn’t close the deal coughing up a 2 out double to Cervelli and an RBI single to Mercer to  cut the lead to  5-4

Clippard instead of starting a clean inning came into  preserve the 1 run lead and couldn’t… He hit the first batter he faced then allowed the tying run to  score on an Adam Frazier single, quickly it was 5-5

Hit and Run

Jameson Taillon  came into  this game allowing only 2 earned runs in 20 innings, good for an 0.90 ERA..

The Yanks had only managed 2 walks off him until  the 5th inning when Romine and Torreyes filled the hit column with consecutive  2 out singles.. Unfortunately the lame NL rules brought up  automatic out Pineda who was easily punched out to  kill the rally

In the 6th inning with Ellsbury and Hicks on board Starlin Castro blasted a one out  402 foot HR to left to  tie the game 3-3

Judge doubled, Bird HBP, Romine single loaded the bases for Torreyes who doubled thanks to Jaso’s miscue in right field and the Yanks after unable to  touch Taillon for 4 .2 innings had scored 5 times off  Taillon and reliever Nicasio to  take the 5-3 lead

Thanks to  the Frazier 2 out error the Bombers blew it open in the 8th

Romine safe at first on error by second baseman Frazier. 5 5
Torreyes singled to center, Romine to second. 5 5
Carter hit for Betances. 5 5
Carter homered to center (422 feet), Romine and Torreyes scored. 8 5
Ellsbury safe at third on error by center fielder McCutchen. 8 5
Frazier in right field. 8 5
Harrison at second base. 8 5
Bastardo relieved Rivero. 8 5
Ellsbury scored on Bastardo’s wild pitch. 9 5
Hicks hit a ground rule double to right. 9 5
Headley doubled to deep left center, Hicks scored. 10 5
Castro grounded out to third. 10 5
5 RUNS, 4 HITS, 2 ERRORS

Judge hit a moon shot in the 9th  to  cap off the 11-5 score

Mitchell cleaned out the 8th 1-2-3, and Chappy polished off the 9th for the Win

Early game today Montgomery vs Nova

Say A Prayer For

Greg Bird now 5 for 45 with  17 punch outs…..

.111 .216 .244 .460

Bird has gone hitless in 10 of the 13 games he’s played in, he’s 1 for 16 since his supposed Break out 3 hit game, off  Chicago’s tender foot rookie Covey, and has struck out in every game but 2..

We’re so  glad Girardi  decided to bench him a day after he finally broke out because Derek Koufax Holland scared him back to  the bench….Bird has hit 900 feet of foul ball HR’s so  maybe at  some point he might find what ever it is that’s confusing him  at  the plate

It didn’t help he was HBP yesterday very close to  the ankle he damaged in Spring Training… We’re lighting candles Bird man

  1. this is so fucking lame, Montgomery hasn’t hit since high school… A 10 Billion dollar business and they can’t figure out a way to lose the no DH rule in the lame ass NL??? watching AL pitchers hit is way more of a deficit then watching position players DH for NL teams…

I’ll never never never understand that reasoning, never…..

  3. Hey friends—good to be back. This team is fun to watch–comebacks breed a winning attitude–
Can Psycho, or will Psycho ever retire the nicknames foolishness? the latest is “Toe” for Torreyes. Come on Psycho—it’s foolish.
Clippard is to shaky for my blood. I like the bullpen to throw smoke. Rather see that as opposed to a reliever who tries to trick the batters. Too fine of a line to do that consistently.
Hope you guys are all doing well

  5. Hey Noogsie what’s shakin!!
    Good to have you back!!
I missed yesterday’s game from the 6th inning on. And based on the play of the 1st 5 innings, I was ready to concede with Pinetop on the bump & holes in our bats.
Went to see the LG & the boys last night. Fun time, but missed the rest of the game. Lo & behold, I wake up to Sal’s PTB, & find out the Yanks pulled a rabbit out of the hat. The way they were going, I wouldn’t have given 2 cents for them to pull out a victory.

Hey Sal, I hear ya on “Bird On A Wire”.
But you’re right, there are so many examples of Girardi sitting a guy the next day after he’s broken out of a major slump. He’s done it to the Doughboy, Headless, Didi, Bret The Face, & countless others. Bird ain’t the first & won’t be the last. I could never understand why he does that. I don’t care who the other pitcher is, the guy has finally figured it out & feels good about himself……leave him in the freakin lineup. Quit over managing!!

  6. Too bad they’re making Nova look like Cy Young
Just a little pressure on him would have probably done it

    Birdie 2 Strikes didn’t whiff today that’s a positive

that poor bastard comes to bat with 2 strikes in him

Double Switch so Birdie 2 Strikes is done 5 for 48
He’ll probably face Porcello on Tuesday then Sale and Pomeranz so probably he’ll get a few days off after Tuesday
