‘Stro Close but yet ‘Stro Far

Jeter Bowl weekend vs the Astros kicked off last night with a tough, but good 3-2 loss ..

All Bombers losses are tough, but this one showed some good with the bad, so the Silver Lining Fairy was in attendance in wake of our misery

The expectations for a win weren’t great with Dallas  Keuchel back to being the Smith Brother who left the family business and opened up his own  Cy Young Award collection agency in Houston

Keuchel is especially tough vs the Yanks, before last night his career slash line vs the Bombers was an  anemic  .185 .213 .237 .450…

In batter vs pitcher against present day  Yankees

.188 .226 .297 .523

He was true to form slicing and dicing the Bomber line up  for 4 innings,  on just  42 pitches, giving back only an infield single to Headley and a legit knock to left by Patches Carter. Everything else sans a Sanchez line drive to right, was either a strike out or ground ball.

Michael Pineda after  coughing up  a 2 run HR to Carlos Correa in the first inning, held serve and matched Keuchel out for out through 4 innings..

Only the Shadow knows what  would have happened had Ellsbury been more aggressive in pursuit of Reddick’s bloop  double that  fell in between the DoughBoy and Gregorius in the first inning.. Then  again who’s to  say Altuve grounds out to  3rd base before Correa homers to right center (397 feet), for the 2-0 lead….

A double and a single put the ‘Stros up  3-0 in the 5th, but the Yanks managed to at least un-nerve Von Keuchel in their bottom half..

With 1 out, reclamation first baseman  Yuli Gurriel clanked a throw from Altuve and Headley reached  safely..  Gregorius singled, Hicks worked a base on balls, and the Bombers had the bases loaded with 1 out..

Carter was no help striking out, but Ellsbury pulled off a high leverage catcher’s interference and the Yanks scored their first  run.. The SanBino couldn’t keep  the line moving grounding out to  3rd base with Bregman making a nice play, but with the help of 2 errors, NY definitely put a dent in Keuchel’s armor  by choking 31 pitches and a run out of him..

The Bombers squeezed another 24 pitches out of Keuchel in the 6th with Holliday  and Castro leading off the inning with back to  back  singles.. Knowing he was in his last inning after piling up 87 pitches with no outs in the 6th, Keuchel  emptied the tank punching out Big Hank, Headley and Gregorius on 14 pitches to  end the threat, and  his night.

The Yanks couldn’t get the big hit off Von Keuchel going 0-6 with RISP, so  you thought it would get easier with Chris Devenski coming in to pitch the 7th inning, but it got worse..

Devenski gave up  a lead off walk  to Hicks in the 7th, but  cleaned the next 3 batters on 2 punch-outs and a ground ball out.. He allowed a 2 out walk to Big Hank who  also  stole 2nd base in the 8th, but the Yanks made it 0-7 with RISP when Headley struck out looking

Astros closer Giles who throws harder, but is less deceptive then Devenski almost blew the save giving up  a lead off walk, a single, and a stolen base, but a clutch 2 out  RBI   single by Sanchez that plated Hicks wasn’t quite deep  enough to score Ellsbury and the DoughBoy was gunned down  by 5 feet to  end it

The Yanks finally got a hit with RISP after going 0-8 before the SanBino single but they couldn’t bring around the tying run..

Espada tried the gunslinger approach by sending Ellsbury despite the strong armed Jake Marisnick who  was a defensive replacement for Aoki in left field playing shallow..

It was a bang bang decision that  forced the Astros to make a play, and both Marisnick  and McCann pulled it off  handing the bad guys a 3-2 win..

You like the fact SanBino  produced a clutch knock in that  spot, but Espada and Ellsbury’s last stand was nipped in the bud…

You also had to be happy with Pineda’s outing, despite giving Correa a 2-0 cookie to  devour in the first inning, he  definitely banked some currency, either as a viable rotation piece if the Yanks stay in it, or a good trade chip if they  fall out..

Adam  the Sheriff Warren wasn’t as sharp in his 1.1 innings giving up  a hit and two walks, but no runs.. Formula Joe’s new chemistry calculation Holder + Shreve = Inning despite, Holder coughing up  two  singles, also put up  zeros in the run column

  2. Billy pour me another Madden wants to give the Bombers hitting coaches a tap.. That will piss off Francesa who doesn’t believe in hitting or pitching coaches.. I wonder if he believes in golf coaches ? I bet he’s dropping a nice chuck of change sending Mrs Franny to golf lessons

I wonder if Mrs Franny has a special relationship with one or two of the golf pros, they are notorious for that being friendly stuff….?

    • Sal—Here is a funny take on Mikey not believing in the necessity of batting coaches….It relates to a posting a week or more ago at Funhouse about Mikey talking about Judge. Mikey’s advice to Judge was not to try to hit home runs. Then Mikey slipped in this gem—Mikey’s kid recently hit a home run in a Little League Game which, according to Mikey was with a fluid, perfect swing, not trying to hit a home run. Mikey had given his kid that advice. So, he was passing the same along to Judge.
Charlie Mikey Lau, equating his kid’s Little League career to Judge.
Is it any wonder why Mikey is so ridiculed and hated by so many?
