God Is Great

The baseball Gods giveth and taketh  away, last night in Kansas City the MLB Deities created a matchup made in heaven for the Yanks…A struggling pitcher, a free swinging cellar seller dwelling offense, last but not least a team  who  had won 6 of 7 and were due for a “market correction”…  ..

The result was a very satisfying 7-1 win over the last place Royals at Kauffman Stadium

The Bombers were reeling after losing 4 of their last 5 games… Three of the losses  came against the AL Chalk Houston at home in an early season litmus test for the upstart Yanks..

That  said, the Bombers were once again blessed with  divine intervention, the losing streak  came when  both Boston and Baltimore stubbed their toes in concert with the Yankees, so despite hitting a speed bump the Bombers now at 23-13 remained 0.5 game in front of the O’s  and 4 in front of Boston..

Both Baltimore and Boston  won last night to keep pace

standings

Baseball God’s are Tricky

I suppose the Royals who  were coming off a sweep of the Orioles could justify the Baseball Gods were still in their corner with the struggling CC Sabathia on the bump  for the Yanks

but

Right from jump  street Sabathia looked a lot different then his last 4 outings, maybe even different then he has all  season… He appeared to have a bounce in his step, and his tempo and rhythm were totally in sync.

Sabathia worked a fairly brisk 6.2 innings, 5 hits, no  runs, 2 BB’s, 4 K’s,  85-56 pitches

He featured 4 pitches, his FB and Slider ate up  62 of the 85 pitches, he picked up  5 of the 8 swings and misses off those bread and butter servings.. Part of his new pitching style features deception and adding his sinker (11)  and change-up (12 / 3 swings and misses), was just  enough to keep KC off balance while creating soft contact

savant

Looks like a healthy mix of pitching inside to RHB, pitches down in the zone, a lot of strikes that produced soft contact an about a 10 MPH difference between his FB and the slider

Sabathia was also  very efficient  with his pitch  count,

pitches

It was a good sign watching Sabathia and Sanchez stay lock- step, the more reps the SanBino gets with the tools on after missing a month,  the better, barring injury… His 3 run Bomb in the 3rd inning is a good reason to  remain patient..

Hit and Run

It was good to  see Patches Carter connect with his 2nd HR of the season, only 39 more to go before he matches his 41 Taters from 2016…

The SanBino’s 3 run missile (425 feet)  in the 3rd inning loosened up  the dugout, and gave the Yanks a 3-0 cushion… Carter’s  2 out, two  run Bomb  (415 feet) put KC in a hole that  was too tough to  dig out of.. Both HR’s were smacked dead central, nothing gets your attention like Taters hitting the head pin and watching the game just  blow open at 5-0

Three 2 out singles plated the Bombers 6th run in the 7th inning to make it 6-0

Castro singled to center.
Judge singled to center, Castro to second.
Ellsbury singled to right, Castro scored, Judge to third.

NY was primed to really blow it open in the 8th, after 2 walks and a single loaded the bases with Holliday  and Castro locked and loaded.. Holliday hit an RBI fielders choice (3rd to  2nd), ditto Castro (SS on 2nd), and the rally died on the vine with only 1 run scoring making it 7-0 with 6 outs to go

Clippard relieved Sabathia and cleaned up  a 2 out bases loaded 7th inning mess.. Clip gave up  a one out single, piggy backed the knock  with a wild pitch,  but polished off the Royals without them scoring in the 8th

Jonathan  Holder who still has his gidrool learners permit despite scoring at  the top of Formula Joe’s grading curve thanks to  a few good outings, had Formula Joe running to  the calm down pill  bottle despite no  real hard contact..

Holder started out good punching out All World Sal Perez..

Bonafacio stroked a 1 out single to left just out of the reach of Headley.. Holder lost Soler to  a base on balls, unable to  command his slider and curve ball in fast ball  counts..

Gordon trickled an infield hit to load the bases with  1 out.. Up 7-0 Psycho Joe got Betances up, no doubt to get his feet wet in a 9th inning situation,  not trusting Holder,  or just because he can’t help himself, pick your poison.

Holder broke off a nice curve and the best  Merrifield could do  was slow bounce it to SS for an RBI fielder’s choice snapping the shut out..

Holder got soft contact off another curve ball for a pop up  to SS to  end it..

pitching

BATTING
2B: Gregorius (4, Hammel)
HR: Sánchez (3, 3rd inning off Hammel 2 on, 0 Out); Carter (2, 4th inning off Hammel 1 on, 2 Out)
RBI: Sánchez 3 (10), Carter 2 (10), Ellsbury (13), Holliday (25)
2-out RBI: Carter 2, Ellsbury
Yankees RISP: 2-10 (Sánchez 1-1, Headley 0-1, Holliday 0-1, Gregorius 0-1, Carter 0-1, Ellsbury 1-2, Castro 0-1, Gardner 0-2)
Team LOB: 9
BASERUNNING
SB: Headley (5, 2nd base off Hammel/Pérez); Judge (3, 2nd base off Hammel/Pérez)
FIELDING
Outfield Assist: Gardner (Soler at 2nd base).

Aaron Judge hit the ball hard all night, he was robbed of at least one laser that Moustakis grabbed, and both  singles were well squared up

Sanchez was very impressive on both  sides of the ball, the results in the 7-1 score speak  for themselves

The Yanks picked up  13 hits Castro continued to  rake getting 2 hits, and Carter had his best offensive game as a NYY with  3 hits, Gregorius and Sanchez had 2 hits apiece, Headley and Ellsbury picked up  a knock each

Holliday  and Gardner were the only 2  kept out of he hit column…

the Whole 9

Pineda vs Vargas

On paper  this game  vs the tough lefty should be a challenge for the Bomber offense.. Pineda could make the Royals look silly, or like the 2015 World Champs, good luck placing a bet on which one…

  1. Capt Crunch has more lives than a cat. Every time you think he’s done, he reinvents himself & turns in a gem. A one trick pony, or did he find something? Stay tuned…

    • moscone whatever he found I hope he doesn’t take it in large doses, we don’t want him to get caught.. Might be the same elixir Gardner, Cito Culver, Sandy Leon in Boston, and Patches Carter was on last night

  4. Good to see you guys run with the baton as it relates to Psycho Joe. I told my brother just the other day how much I despise that bastard. Those silly nicknames–now he’s addded Chappy and Sevvy. Next time he double switches and takes Judgy out and we lose him in extra innings, here’s hoping that Smarty Pants Joey is laughed at when he says what he always does–” well, it’s not what you want to see happen.” One more point—I don’t give a shit what he or Cashman say—you don’t bat Sanchez second. Did Johnny Bench bat second? Thurman? How about Yogi? Elston? Carlton Fisk?
You don’t always have to reinvent the wheel.

    • Noogsie, good to see you, the Yanks are winning in spite of Psycho Joe, he’s turning into the Mike Francesa of managers…..

How is he batting Headley behind Judge and Hicks 8th???

Sanchez down in the order works for me, Hicks is playing well enough to put him in the 2 hole…. These guys are new school, they’re crunching numbers and playing fantasy baseball…

      Sanchez batting 5th ..750 / .846 / .750 / 1.596

      batting 2nd .214 .267 .452 .719

      batting 3rd 0-4 with a BB

      batting in the first inning .364 .462 .636 1.098

Sanchez obviously was batting 5th in the first inning on occasions

  6. The Sharp Attack

    Katie Sharp‏ @ktsharp

    Jason Vargas in 2017:
    1st 7 starts – 44.2 IP, 5 ER
    Tonight – 4 IP, 6 ER

    Michael Pineda 2017:
    K% – 30.3, BB% – 3.6

    Pitchers w/ 30+ K% and <4 BB% in season: P. Martinez (2000), Schilling (2002), Scherzer (2015)

One starting pitcher is ranked in the top 5 in both K% and BB% this season …

    Michael Pineda.

CC Sabathia is now 5-0 with 1.42 ERA in 5 career starts at Kauffman Stadium as a Yankee

Players in MLB history w/ at least 3000 hits, 250 HR, 350 SB, 1300 RBI:

    Derek Sanderson Jeter.

  7. at least they got Vargas out, not sure if that’s good or bad…. They’re not giving Judge much to hit and the young man is doing a hell of a job not expanding the strike zone … Be nice for him to run into a mistake as payback for his patience

CC or Larry should talk to Pineda, keep his head in the game, eat some innings, work on the fast ball command

  12. Boston tied it at 4-4.. I thought St Louis invented baseball

Checked out Stat cast exit velocity numbers Boston has two players over league average Betts and Moreland… in the starting 9 Yanks had just Headley, Gregorius and Hicks under league average

You gotta be kidding me. Eddy Rodriguez has done it again. Two-run homer into the RailRiders bullpen gives them a 9-8 lead.
