Nightmare On Tropicana Street

with 11 comments

Well it happened again, the Yanks rolled into Tampa’s House of Horrors, the Trop, and the expected happened, they lost a tough 5-4 game..

In my mind this debacle will forever to be known as the Nightmare on Tropicana Street.. It wasn’t the Mother of all Grrr Losses, but one of her  ugly sister’s do come to mind…

The last thing to work out in the Yanks favor playing in this Tin Can Alley circus tent was them getting swept 3 straight last July 29th to 31st.. That lost weekend in Jr Steinbrenner’s back yard didn’t make for a pleasant diner outing with the lovely Christina..

By Sunday night, Jr unleashed his pit bull  Cashman, and the GM  was ordered to take care of all  family business.. With Shotgun Chapman already gone,  the GM happily obliged and finished cleaning house

July 25, 2016…Traded Aroldis Chapman to the Chicago Cubs. Received Rashad Crawford (minors), Billy McKinney (minors), Gleyber Torres (minors) and Adam Warren.

July 31, 2016….Traded Vicente Campos to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Received Tyler Clippard.

Traded Andrew Miller to the Cleveland Indians. Received J.P. Feyereisen (minors), Clint Frazier (minors), Justus Sheffield (minors) and Ben Heller.

August 1, 2016….Traded Carlos Beltran to the Texas Rangers. Received Nick Green (minors), Erik Swanson (minors) and Dillon Tate (minors).

Traded Ivan Nova to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Received players to be named later. The Pittsburgh Pirates sent Tito Polo (minors) (August 30, 2016) and Stephen Tarpley (minors) (August 30, 2016) to the New York Yankees to complete the trade.

August 13, 2016…Released Alex Rodriguez.

Last night there were no  cat  walk incidents, or roof top interferences, but there were plenty of strange behavioral patterns from folks in New York laundry.. The Bombers have  been living the dream despite now owning  a losing 4 and 6 record over the last 10 games

Those Inflicted

Luis Severino

Severino  has started 8 games, he’s compiled 47 innings, that’s 5.2 innings per outing.. As a team  the Bomber starters (224.1) are 10 innings below league average (234)

League average for innings pitched by starter is 5.6,

Severino’s splits

ERA 5.84 / third time around the line-up / 12.1 innings pitched

ERA 2.04 / 17.2 innings / 2nd time thru

ERA 3.78 / 16.2 innings / 18 hits / 6 BB’s, 1.44 WHIP, 1st time thru

Severino was a box of chocolates last night, a 30 pitch  1st inning, 13 pitch 2nd, 26 pitch 3rd, 8 pitch 4th, 12 pitch 5th, 89 pitches 5 innings, he gone, Why?

His problem  seemed to be tempo and rhythm in 2 of the 5 innings he pitched.. His overall results were  17 foul balls, 16 swings and misses, 5 hits, 7 K’s, 1 run and a lot of pitches in not a lot of innings

Severino has gotten out of the 6th inning just  once since his Boston massacre, now 5 starts ago.. Of course Louie isn’t part of the problem, but he’s inconsistent compiling quality innings, which is fine for a 23 yr old learning to be a starter

The issue, despite being a top  ten K/9  pitcher, you can’t quite put him in the top of the rotation  category until he can get his IP up  above league average…There are a lot of bad teams dragging that  average down, and if the Yanks and Severino want to be the real  deal, they need to play better not below league average or the pen will  dissolve like sugar in hot water

Severino  left the game with a 2-1 lead, did Thomson get cold feet and  play the third time around the line-up number  (5.38 ERA) and pull him… With Chapman out and a 3 game series in front of you, why didn’t he push him?

Jonathan Holder

A nice inning, 13 pitches, nice 3 pitch mix, slider / curve looked nasty, he punched out two batters, had a near 70% strike rate, coughed up  a hit in between 2 K’s and a ground ball  to  first base out… Thomson was never gonna give Holder more then  1 inning no matter what transpired  and went to  the 7-8-9 formula..

Nice job by Holder, maybe yanking him before the House of Horrors took him down was the right thing to  do, but I didn’t think  so  at  the time… Who  knows what Warren or Clippard have, they’ve been pretty good, but that’s not 1996 Mo and Jeff Nelson coming through the bull pen door..

Adam  the Sheriff Warren

Warren was off his game, no  surprise considering where he was patrolling his beat

Dickerson singled to right. 2 1
Kiermaier singled to center, Dickerson to second. 2 1
Longoria singled to right, Dickerson to third, Kiermaier to second. 2 1
Morrison hit sacrifice fly to center, Dickerson scored, Kiermaier to third, Longoria to second. 2 2
Souza Jr. struck out swinging. 2 2

The Yanks were out of the inning, Shreve had pinch hitter  Weeks punched out but the paint call  went to Weeks not Shreve..

weeks

On the next pitch Weeks hit a groupnd-ball  to  3rd base and Torreyes stubbed his Toe, and Tampa grabbed a 4-2 lead

toe blow

Shreve relieved Warren. 2 2
Weeks Jr. hit for Rasmus. 2 2
Weeks Jr. doubled to left, Kiermaier and Longoria scored. 2 4
Bourjos ran for Weeks Jr.. 2 4
Beckham grounded out to shortstop. 2 4
3 RUNS, 4 HITS, 0 ERRORS

Tampa grabbed a 4-2 lead

Happy Holliday

Matt Holliday  was born  to be a NY Yankee, too bad he got to  the Bronx so late in his career.. He belted a huge clutch HR to  tie it 4-4 in the 8th, and NY had all  the momentum

Momentum Clipped

Here’s where the Chapman injury came into play, Thomson never got to his best  reliever   Betances into  this game…Tyler Clippard who is not his best, was next in Thomson’s recipe for disaster,  and judging by his now 1-3 W/L record as a fill in manager, it’s a family recipe handed down..

Robertson struck out swinging. 4 4
Norris walked. 4 4
Dickerson struck out swinging. 4 4
Kiermaier walked, Norris to second. 4 4
Longoria singled to left, Norris scored, Kiermaier to third. 4 5
Longoria to second on fielder’s indifference. 4 5
Morrison struck out swinging. 4 5
1 RUNS, 1 HITS, 0 ERRORS

Clippard walked the lead off batter, I guess they  don’t make #9 hitters like they used to  and Derek Norris scared Clippard out of the strike zone.. With two outs and Yankee killer  Longoria one AB away Clippard walked the lesser of two  evils  Kiermaier..

At this point maybe Betances would be a good call, but Thomson wasn’t tearing himself away from the formula recipe…Longoria who had 4 hits on the night poked the game winner… 5-4 Rays

Down by a run in the 9th, Thomson ignored  Sanchez, Hicks and Headley , acted like they never existed on his bench, again forget the game in front of you, go with the pre-game formula

Colomé relieved Farquhar. 4 5
Gregorius popped out to shortstop. 4 5
Carter struck out swinging. 4 5
Romine grounded out to pitcher. 4 5
0 RUNS, 0 HITS, 0 ERRORS

Thomson and the Bombers went down 1-2-3 with Strike out machine Patches Carter, and Romine who  hasn’t played in 4 games, has played in only 3 games all month  and was working on a solid 0-3 night….

Even if Romine gets on base there is no Sanchez who had the night off, he was promised it by Thomson, forget the game situation,  it’s the formula

“This was my decision and I told Sanchy that unless it was an emergency, I was going to try and give him a day off,’’ Thomson said of the catcher, who had started eight of the previous 10 games and got into the team hotel at 4 a.m. Friday with the other players. “In order to do that, it kind of limited my pinch-hitting opportunities. I had to pick one guy and it was going to be [Chase] Headley for Torreyes if somebody got on in the ninth.’’

The Formula  all  comes down the pike  from Thomson’s boss, Psycho Joe, it was no  doubt Thomson’s call, but the seeds have been planted  long ago, and the bench  coach has been a Psycho Joe trusted soldier since 2008

Nightmare on Tropicana Street 2 will hit the big screen today  at 4 PM ET

Tanaka who  was brutalized in the opener at  the Trop, stars in this sequel, and he gets a chance to  redeem himself

I’d take the  over that he doesn’t….Nothing personal Nibbles, but you’re in the wrong place at  the wrong time …

Big difference between Thomson and Girardi in post-game pressers:
    Girardi: “Shrever”
    Thomson: “Shrevie”*
    (*- Canadian pronunciation)

Good thing Bobby Mitchell isn’t managing Yankees tonight. Ellsbury, who stood at the plate and watched that pop up, would be on the bench.

  8. After all these years, haven’t they fucking learned? You NEVER pitch to Longoria with the game on the line!!! How many times does he have to beat us for it to register into those skulls???

  9. Sal you were right when you said this was their world series. Watching the game,I just had a feeling the Yanks were playing to give the game away. The Rays have the best pitching in the division, but last night they faced Erasmo “the Scumbag” Ramirez,a mop reliever, and managed 2 runs off that pos. Longoria was 0-12 before going 4-5 last night!!! Weeks, batting .211,hits a shitty hopper that TOE fucks up into a game turning 2 run double. Adam Warren needs to be deported. After Holiday hits a 2 run bomb,Clippard walks
the leadoff man,Norris, the fat pos catcher batting .225,walks another, then gives up the winning hit to Longoria!! WTF!!! Then with the bottom of the Yankee lineup-which was 0-14 in the game-there are no pinch hitters for the Worthless pos Carter and Romine-game over!! Yankees lose!! Pathetic that the lunatic fans such as myself care more than their manager. I have no doubt that PsychoJoe gave the orders about what to do. Resting Sanchez just blew my mind. After not playing for 3 weeks, didn’t play Saturday due to rain, playing 1 game Sunday, off Monday to travel, played 3 night games, had to rest on Friday!!! WTF!!!
Mauer moved to 1b,Posey plays 1b you just cannot let a big bat like Sanchez rot on the bench, especially with a WORTHLESS USELESS SCUMBAG LIKE CARTER WASTING AT BATS. I hate the fucking Rays,
losing to them makes me nuts!! Other than Longoria, not one of their position players is worth a fuck or could play on the Yankees. DISGUSTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. hey fellas I couldn’t agree more with all of it, fantastic takes….

Lying Joe taught Thomson how to do everything but BS… Today Lying Joe said Sanchy had a stiff neck that’s why he was out

So today the stiff neck just vanished ….. just like that…
