Counting the last game in Cincinnati, the Bombers had lost 7 of 10 before salvaging  the final game  in Tampa on Sunday to  break  a 3 game slide..

Last night in the first of 7 home games vs  the Royals (4) and A’s (3)  the Yanks made it 2 wins in a row with a 4-2 squeaker over KC.

The W combined with an Orioles loss pushed the Yank to  a 1.5 game lead over the Buck O’s, and 4.5 over the idle Red Sox

The Bronx Bombers  were propelled to  victory by  3 HR’s, a good 6.1 innings start from Pineda, 2.2 innings from their 3 best  relievers, and last but certainly not least, the call of the game by their video Whisperer Brett Weber,

The key play came with two outs in the top of the seventh with the Yankees up 3-2.

Alcides Escobar grounded up the middle, Starlin Castro making a nice play way to his right, but Escobar initially was ruled safe as Jorge Soler hustled all the way from second base and beat Chris Carter’s throw home to tie the game.

Upon further review, Escobar was called out, the run nullified.

That play was  a nail in the tire for the Royals, and a new set of radials for the Yanks..

The very next inning Chris Hurricane Carter belted a first  row Dinger to left field cushioning the lead to 4-2.. It was great to see Carter who  broke an 0-14 slid, chase the wolves off his porch  for a night

The Gardner-ing Section

Bust out the Retro Gardzilla jerseys

Brett Gardner has turned back the clock to 2015’s first half when he was an  All Star alternate who got the call when Alex Gordon couldn’t make the bell.. He quickly morphed from Gardzilla wrecking buildings to Tiny Tim tip toeing through the tulips when he slipped  to a .206 average in the second half.

In the what have you done for me lately column he’s hitting .346/.429/.726 in May with seven home runs and 20 runs in 19 games… His third inning solo Planting was his ninth HR in his past 21 games. It went 391 feet and  it cut a 2-0 KC lead in half 2-1

DD Gre-Glorius

Gardner got all  the ink, but DD Gregorius’s 405 foot, 2 run Tater in the 4th inning was the  Bomb that  sunk the Royals.. It was his 2nd hit of the game, his  6th hit in a row coming off his 4-4 afternoon at the Trop, and it came with  two outs to  grab a lead the Yanks would never relinquish……

Ace Pineda

Most MLB pundits parroted each other this off season claiming the key to  the Bombers shaky rotation  would be Michael Pineda.. At the moment, maybe by default, Pineda is now wearing the sheriff’s badge Tanaka refuses to pin on his chest and is hands down the Yanks best  starter.. Scary thought

pineda

After 6 up  and 6 down Pineda coughed up  a HR, a double and a single to dig the Yanks a 2-0 hole in the 3rd..

At 2-1 in the 4th, Hosmer led off with a double but Pineda stranded him..Now up  3-2 in the 5th, a lead off walk and a wild pitch  to Soler put a quick RISP, but the threat  died on the vine

Pineda gave up  a 2 out single in the 6th, and a 1 out single in the infamous replay  7th to end his night..

Pineda’s  bread and butter slider generated a 34.9% whiff rate on (15 of 43 pitches). The one pitch  they’d like to  see him use more successfully his change up was also very helpful navigating through his 19 outs, 9 whiffs out of 14 thrown…

Pineda’s HR % is up  a bit from 2016, so when he misses the hitter usually doesn’t, and that  could be a problem for him and the Yanks.. So  far so  good with Pineda, in a walk  year he’s starting to pitch like a guy  you wouldn’t mind re-signing if he gave you a hometown discount.. TBC

His final line: 6.1 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 K.

Warren relieved Pineda with  1 out in the 7th  and immediately kicked over the bucket of milk by throwing a wild pitch which landed Soler in scoring position.. An F/9 preceded the Escobar replay that landed in the Yanks back pocket

Clippard had a 1-2-3 pitch to  soft contact 8th, and after a lead off single to  Sal Perez, Betances cleaned the inning finishing off Soler by buckling his knees with a wicked curve ball, one he featured throughout the inning

  2. Betances is making Levine look like a complete ass hole, and now Francesa comes out to wax Betances, where was he when Levine used Betances as a punching bag? He sucked up to the company line in between his football takes

    • Sal–I was thinking the same thing about Levine this morning.
He might be the worst in the organization.
They’d be in deep you know what without Betances right now.
Gardzilla is on a pace to pass Maris. 63 homers in 9 years and now 9 more in just over 3 weeks. Forrest Gump had it right–“Shit happens.”

  3. Thanks for the recap Sal! I was in a Feat state of mind the last 2 nights! Just great shows! They haven’t lost anything off their fastball.

Just read about the Judge’s Chamber section the Yanks have installed. Pretty cool. Faux wood & sign. Fans are showing up in wigs & judge’s robes. Good fun!

Anything to make Brillo look like an asshole is fine with me! I almost ran him over a couple of years ago, making the turn for the 59th bridge at 58th St. He was walking his poodle, of course, the putz!!

Yup, it’s just not driving enough. Would love to see someone like Shawn Pelton playing with them. He plays SO BIG!!

  7. The Royals are hitting fly balls to right field for HRs
After they saw the Hicks dinger they figured hell we can do that

This ought slow down the hype BS and get them back to business

    • Girardi is a complete ass hole
Sal Perez scared him into yanking Gumbino

Unfortunately Cain woke Girardi up and he lost confidence in the Rook

This was a tough game to win Duffy has their number
but Montgomery did well this isn’t how I thought they would lose

Yes Betances despite what Sweeney said had to be enjoying his last 2 outings

Good job by Girardi sitting Gardner lol

Maybe they can wake up now that Duffy is out
