Boston Sox Yanks 5-4

with 8 comments

“The all have a plan, until  the get hit”

Masahiro  Tanaka is an unmitigated mess, but he wasn’t alone in the Yanks 5-4 loss to  the Red Sox, moving Boston  to  within one game of first place in the AL East..

Once again  the Bomber offense took  an O-fer Re: RISP, last night they  were 0 for 10 in what may have been as pathetic a performance as Tanaka’s insidious  start

Yankees RISP: 0-10 (Headley 0-2, Holliday 0-1, Gregorius 0-2, Carter 0-2, Hicks 0-1, Judge 0-1, Castro 0-1)
Team LOB: 8

The Bombers with RISP  .238 / .318 /.468. /786 that’s 9th out of 15 AL Teams and 21st out of 30 MLB teams..

It took Drew Pomeranz 123 pitches to get  through 5 innings, so  that  was a good sign the offense has been patient..The Bad sign unfortunately is the bigger wheel that  ran the Bombers over in this one, they couldn’t get the big hit when it counted

They did manage to  score a run  with a man on 3rd base but it took  a Gregorius strike out, and the ball  getting away  from Vazquez in the 8th inning for it to happen

At the moment  NY is getting .226 /.291 /.363 /.654 from their catchers so Gary Sanchez who  went 0-5 with 2 K’s last night hasn’t quite lived up  to  the expectations..

So far the “Sanchise” has played 3 months and 9 days of varsity baseball, he was All World offensively  for the first month last season,  and  pedestrian  at best for the remainder..

At the moment he’s hitting  .248. /336. /425. / 761 / 28  for 113 with 31 K’s

that’s a tick under 24% K rate, which is pretty much  what he did in 2016.. In contrast

Judge is at  29.5% 66 K’s in 189 AB’s / 224 PA’s

Last night Gardner and Sanchez the #1 and 2 batters went a combined  0-9 with 5 K’s, Gardner induced a BB..

Offensive Offense

Down 1-0 in the 2nd inning, a walk, a single and an error scored their 1st run, but Headley and Carter couldn’t bring in the man  from 3rd with 1 out dos  they let Pomeranz off the ropes

Two men on with one out in the 4th  but Headley bounced into  a DP

Carter hit a HR in the 5th, Judge doubled with 2 outs but Holliday, NY’s best hitter with RISP  was punched out

Pomeranz was finally yanked after 5 innings and Farrell gifted NY a Loogy Robbie Scott to  face 2 RHB before the targeted Gregorius got to  the plate.. Both Castro  and Hicks reached on singles, but Gregorius who has better splits vs LHP, bounced into  a double play, it scored NY’s 3rd run but killed a potential big inning

Judge was the tying run at the plate after Gardner worked a walk in the 7th, but Kelly punched him out on a 3-2 slider

Holliday led off the 8th with a double off Barnes another less then dynamic reliever.. Again no  clutch, Castro grounded out, Hicks popped up, Gregorius was punched out by Kimbrel but the run scored on a passed ball to make it 5-4..

Headley walked, making  Carter was the go  ahead run at the plate  but he conveniently struck out

Kimbrel blew away the the helpless Gardner who never stood a chance, ditto Sanchez who was helpless all night, and Judge who  was just  over matched

The only silver lining was Kimbrel  throwing 30 pitches in 1.1 innings so he’ll only be used for one inning tonight, if at  all…. Gardner Sanchez and Judge never put up  a fight….

Masahiro Igawa

Tanaka has been awful  all  season sans 2 games, a  complete game 3 hit  shut-out vs Boston on April  27th , and a 7.1 inning 5 hit no run 13 K  stint vs the A’s  an month later on May 26th..

Das It…

Tanaka has sucked no  doubt, but Girardi  yanked his sorry ass after 5 innings, and Chad Too Green was brilliant, shutting out Boston for 3.1 innings, on no hits and 5 punch outs.. The only hit Boston got after the 5th inning was a ringing double in the 9th  when Joey Claps couldn’t help himself and he pulled Green after 45 pitches so he could match up Lefty on Lefty with Bradley..

Bradley immediately smacked a double, but Shreve was able to handle  the bottom of the order and the score stayed  5-4.. Joey Claps also  tried to  sneak Penny Layne into  the game in the 6th to face LHB Moreland and he walked him before Green came in to bail Girardi out

When Girardi  doesn’t have to  do  anything but stand there, that’s when  the Yanks have their best  chance to  win a game….

The Bombers had numerous chances to  unravel the very hittable Pomeranz, they had 3 innings to gang up on 3 OK Boston  relievers before the Monster Kimbrel would take their lunch money, and the offense Choked  trying to land the knock out punch

Cashman’s Biggest Nightmares

Headley : 14 for 85 in May 3 for 19 in June.. $26M

Hurricane Carter:    21 for 115, 5 HR’s 49 K’s, .183 /.278. /357 /.635  $3.5M

Nibbles Tanaka: 3 more Yr’s  @ $67M

The Yankees have somehow held first place with Tanaka amassing the AL’s worst ERA (6.55). But how much longer will that persist?

the Yankees are 10-11 in their past 21 games, and Tanaka is 0-5 in that span with a 10.72 ERA.

The only qualified starter with a worse ERA than Tanaka’s is Bartolo Colon (7.78), who on Tuesday was put on the disabled list with what the Braves called an oblique strain, but may just have been a cover story to get him off the active roster.

Tanaka has permitted 17 homers this season — 11 in his last five starts and 22 ²/₃ innings. His two strikeouts Tuesday tied for the second-fewest he has ever had in a start.

Tanaka gave up 3 HR’s that’s as many swings and misses he had while throwing extended batting practice to  Boston

To hear Tanaka after the game was to leave no doubt that he needs a break, perhaps more mentally than physically. He admitted at his locker that he was pressing, trying to make the perfect pitch, which led to what he called, via his interpreter, “crucial mistakes.”

We haven’t seen a Choke job like this since October 2004

Chance Adams took a lot of pressure off Cashman by getting lit up last night for a 3 run HR, while walking 4 batters vs Rochester, in an 8-1  SWB loss

Gleyber Torres who is batting .238 and went 0-3 last night also keeps Headley safe at the moment, or better yet Cashman  from being forced to bring the kid up

Greg Bird will play a game at SWB on Thursday last night he went 1-4 with a double.. Bird has a Vitamin hitting steak, 1 a day  for the 6 games he’s played in at  the A ball Level

  1. “Bird has a vitamin hitting streak. 1 a day for the 6 games he’s played in at the A Ball Level.”
    Fukking brilliant!!
Tough to watch last night. The people in the stands should’ve been wearing body armor to avoid a hospital visit, the way they were banging around Nibbles Igawa.
We’s in trouble if they can’t figure out WTF is wrong with him.
The torture of watching the Yanks with RISP has got to stop. Hopefully, tonight.
    Which leads me to this:
I’ll be at the Mall On Rivera Avenue tonight. Grandstand, 1st row, behind Home Plate. It ain’t the catbird seat, but not a bad view. Just a little too high up. Would love to sit downstairs, but can’t afford seats near the Lonn Trost Memorial Moat.
I’m going with 2 Yankee fans & 1 Sux fan. Guys I’ve known for over 40 yrs. But I have no problem tossing the Sux fan over the short rail if his sorry ass gets outta line.
I just hope the good Capt Crunch shows up tonight.

Bondise appreciate the offer but those fucks ain’t getting my money, plus I can’t see the pitches and how they break, if they want to pay me to fill up a seat so they don’t look so bad I’m in……

  7. Bird’s game was rained out in Fla…. Sanchez down in the order much better, the top 4 were 1 for 13 before getting a hit, so maybe it didn’t work out.. they ended up 2 for 17
