A-Bombs From Aa-Ron

OK who had Aaron Hicks and Jordan Montgomery on their Fantasy team in early March? Do  you even put Fantasy teams together in early March?

Regardless if you do  or don’t, in Spring Training Aaron Hicks was the annoying pimple who was trying to keep Aaron Judge out of Right Field, which  would have sent him  back to AAA

Imagine that, a world without Judgemania !!!

That  would be  like not inventing ice cream, or Mario Puzo saying, ah this is bull  shit, it’ll never fly as he tosses the Godfather transcript into his fireplace’s blazing inferno….

Up in smoke, that’s what happened to  Buck Showalter’s Orioles mash unit last night at  the Mall on Rivera Avenue, as the Bombers blew up Baltimore 8-2..

Aaron Hicks who  was a first  round draft choice turned enigma after he failed to make  the Twins great  again is turning out to be one of Cashman’s finest hours as a GM…

In the 2nd inning when Schoop took Montgomery deep for a 2 run Dinger, and the Yanks countered with a Castro Tater, a SanBino hustle double, and a Headley sac fly to tie it at  2-2, the game morphed into  a pitchers duel between Bob Dylan Bundy and the rookie Jordan Montgomery.

Both teams went 6 up  6 down over the 3rd and 4th innings until Ruben Tejada, who  was sticking it to  the Yanks, doubled to left field.. The O’s small balled him to  3rd base on a sac bunt with Boom Boom Mancini  and Adam Jones lined up to  drive him home

Montgomery gave up  a rocket line drive that Gregorius nabbed has he fell  to  the ground… With 2 down he punched out Jones on a wicked curve ball stranding the runner at  3rd base…After that execution the Gumbino became a made man….

Hicks took over the game from that point, his first attack came in the 6th when he went Big Fly into  the Judges Chambers giving the Yanks a 3-2 lead

With Montgomery still  dealing, the Yanks blew it open in the 7th inning thanks in part to Buck  gifting the Bombers Edwin Suitcase Jackson, who  was pitching for his 12th  team…..

Headley safe at first on throwing error by pitcher Jackson.
Romine sacrificed to catcher, Headley to second.
Gardner grounded out to first, Headley to third.
Hicks homered to right (367 feet), Headley scored.
Judge walked.
Holliday doubled to deep left center, Judge scored.
Crichton relieved Jackson.
Castro grounded out to third.

Hicks did it again, his 2nd HR, this one was  poked 370 feet to  right field and it  blew open the game 5-2.. Holliday followed with a double making the game almost Clippard proof at 6-2

The Yanks gave Betances, Warren  and Green  the night off, and made this one gidrool proof adding two more runs in the 8th

Sánchez singled to right.
Gregorius singled to right, Sánchez to second.
Headley walked, Sánchez to third, Gregorius to second.
Romine singled to shallow right, Sánchez and Gregorius scored, Headley to second,

Good job by the Romine Empire who became a made man subbing for the SanBino during his absence… Last night he sac bunted in front of Hicks’ 2nd HR, then found a hole for the 2 RBI knock that dead bolted the door closed on Baltimore..

He also guided Montgomery to  another stellar performance last night

7.0 innings, 5 hits, 2 runs, 1 BB, 8 K’s,  1 HR, 94-69 pitches

With Romine behind the dish Montgomery has been very effective

.187 /.237 / .297 / .534…. .210 ERA.. 25.2 innings, 17 hits

In games Romine’s started the Yanks are 17-7

As for Hicks, the Yanks are starting to push  him as an All Star, which is fine, but I’m wondering if they  should be pushing all  their players to  rest up over the All Star break?

Hicks for 2017….318 /.426 /.584 / 1.010  / 30 BB’s, 31 K’s / 10 HR’s….

Hicks in the 2 hole .306 /.417 / .612 / 1.029 ..21 games 7 HR’s

Hicks in the 6 hole .353 /.389 /.471 /.859 … 5 games 1 HR

The Yanks have found a nice blend with Hicks batting 2nd and Sanchez in a more traditional middle of the order spot.. Neither player cares where they hit, as long as they’re a part of the action, that’s the attitude we love

Jordan Montgomery has been a God send, the Yanks have seemingly developed 2 young starters in Montgomery and Severino… The GumBino wasn’t even on the radar this Spring, and Severino  was thought of as nothing more then  a bull pen weapon, going through the motions as a starter

Add both pitchers to  the Sanchez, Judge, Romine, trio and the Yanks so far have produced 5  Young home grown keepers to  go  with Betances, and the emergence of senior member Gardzilla

Hopefully Bird can  add to  that list this month

  2. Wow! Is this ever fun! Hicksey and Sanchy ( as my favorite manager calls them) are now better positioned in the lineup. Of course, it’s more than that as strawberry c heesecake stills tastes good as an appetizer, but it’s better after the braciole and ravioli.
Montgomery shows us than there’s more to pitching than putting a guy like Eovaldi out there who can throw 100 plus and still get his ass handed to him.
The Funhouse was all over Mikey (during his Mr Ed –Belmont preview show yesterday–one guy called to ask why Mikey doesn’t interview horses!!). Mikey found time between handicapping to say that Headley hasn’t been playing that badly. Compared to??? Celerino Sanchez? Mark Sanchez as a quarterback?
Anyway, all is good. As Sal would say–keep loading the wagon.

  3. The Gumbino!!! Another great moniker from Sally Boy! Entered immediately into the pantheon of all the great monikers that came before!!

Hey Noogsy! I loved the Celerino Sanchez line! Fukking brilliant!!

What are we gonna do now that he’s seen Paree! At this rate, how the hell can you ever take Hicks out of the lineup? This guy is just like Byron Buxton of the Twins. A 5 tool guy, who can do it all, but the hitting part has not clicked in. But for Hicks, it has.
This guy worked hard. With more AB’s toward the end of last season, you started to see signs of this. And now, he’s completely transformed & upped his game to a new level. CashMan’s patience has been rewarded.
All in all…’s a great problem to have.

  4. I picked up Montgomery as soon as he was brought up and picked up Hicks when Ellsbury went down, someone had just released him, I originally drafted Sanchez,Holliday,Bird and Castro- it did not go well with Sanchez and Bird. I was glad to see Sanchez in the lineup as dh when he wasn’t catching. Does that mean our genius manager finally got his head out of his ass? Time will tell. I have to take back all the bad things I said about Hicks last year-lol He does not look like the same player, thankfully. The Gumbino is
just what they need, its about time they developed some players. Sensei Sherman had an article on GARDY which tells the sad tale of woe about the Yankee drafts. BTW,the mlb draft is Monday.
