Baltimore Chopped

with 15 comments

This one was over quicker then Tyson / Michael Spinks as the Yanks pounded Buck Showalter’s O’s 16 -3 behind 5 HR’s, and another 7 inning, 2 hit, 89 pitch  gem from Severino..

FWIW Severino now has a 2.75 ERA, Chris Sale 2.97

Hitters Best Friend: Chris Tillman

With  two outs in the first inning Aaron Judge hit a 121 MPH A-Bomb from Aa-Ron to left field it was his league leading 19th HR of the young season, and man did it get  the party started

The next 6 batters reached on 3 singles, a double a walk,  a HR and in a blink it was 6-0

Judge homered to left (397 feet).

Holliday singled to left.

Castro doubled to left, Holliday to third.

Sánchez singled to left, Holliday and Castro scored.

Gregorius homered to right (402 feet), Sánchez scored.

Headley walked.

Headley to second on wild pitch by Tillman.

Carter singled to left, Headley scored.

Gardner grounded into fielder’s choice to second, Carter out at second.

In the 2nd inning 2 walks and a 447 ft 3 run Bomb from Castro  mercifully ended Tillman’s night and the game was now just  a matter of formality with the Yanks up 9-0

With Stef Crichton on the bump in the 4th  the Yanks piled on 3 more runs on a Hicks walk, a Judge rocket single, and a Happy Holliday 3 run Ballantine Blast to give the Bombers a comfortable 12-0 lead after 4

In the 5th a one out  single by Gardzilla, followed by a Hicks double that  was  capped off  by a 2 run double from  Judge to  put the Bombers ahead 14-0.. After a Holliday  single Psycho Joe started to  remove his starters with Castro  being the first  to depart, as Torreyes took over 2nd base

In the 8th Mike Wright took over and with one out he hit Torreyes on the hand… In the 6th inning  Edwin Jackson walked Sanchez but before ball  4 he  backed him off the plate with one high and tight… Sanchez gave him a  little glare as he jogged to  first  base.

After the Torreyes HBP in the 8th, Sanchez delivered a 405 foot line drive HR to left center to  cap off the Yanks 16 run attack..

Despite all  this exit velo stuff and  Big Hank breaking speeding records I haven’t seen a line drive hit that hard since Frank Howard did it back in the day  as a DC Senator in the old Stadium.. Big Frank’s Tagter may have been a little lower to  the ground but no more impressive then  the SanBino’s laser shot..

Baltimore Chopped

Luis Severino was absolutely dominant over his 7 inning 89 pitch  gem… He started 12 up  12 down as he carried a perfect game through 4 innings…

Trumbo  broke up the perfecto with a base on balls in the 5th, followed by a 1 out single from Boom Boom Mancini to erase  the no hitter

With one out in the 7th Severino delivered a low fastball to Chris Davis, and as John Smoltz mentioned it’s the one spot Davis can hurt you, and he did breaking up  the shut-out with a no doubt about it 400 foot Tater  to left field putting the O’s on the board 14-1

It was the only blemish on yet another outstanding Severino performance

7 innings, 2 hits, 1 run, 2 BB’s, 8 K’s, 2.75 ERA

The concern was Severino losing his rhythm while sitting through  the long innings thanks to  some great / extended Bombers AB’s. Severino never let the delays bother him, his fastball was as lively as we’ve seen it, his slider and change up as deceptive as ever, a truly brilliant outing from the 23 yr old  potential All Star sensation..

The YES Men

Joey Claps gave the  Pen a night off and he went with his 2 mops to  close it out..

Astronomer Giovani Gallegos coughed up  a 390 foot HR to Rickard in the 8th, and Penny Layne managed to  destroy the  RISP scoreless streak the Bomber pitchers had compiled when he allowed a lead off walk to  score on a pinch hit single to Joseph in the 9th…

That broke a string of 45 consecutive hitless at-bats with runners in scoring position by Yankees pitchers. The 0-for-45 stretch is tied for the third longest since RISP numbers started being recorded in 1974.

As expected Chad Too Green will get the start today subbing for the confused Nibbles Tanaka who  was pushed back a day  and will open the Anaheim series on Monday… Good chance the Yanks will play  today  with  24 players, as long as they’re babying Tanaka, might as well  send him to SoCal today..

Tanaka is usually better with  extra rest and why on earth  they’re wasting a roster spot in the pen with Penny  Layne when they can be carrying another long man / spot starter is beyond me… A 6 man  rotation would give the everybody an  extra day, something Pineda Sabathia and Tanaka could use

My guess Severino  and Montgomery are good either way….They may have put more pressure on Tanaka as he  faces the Trout-less Angles in a pitchers park… If he bombs on Monday, Cashman  and Girardi have some juggling to  at least think  about RE: what  to  do  with Tanaka

A 10 day vacation might be the next step in  an effort to figure out what’s wrong with Nibbles… Personally I’d call Pedro Martinez, he fixed Severino when  the rest of Joey Claps  team of geniuses couldn’t…..

  2. Green looks great but giving him 50 pitches and asking him to give you length is like asking a $1000 hooker if $200 bucks is ok

    • If Girardi isn’t gonna put Tanaka on a 5 day rest schedule why did they back him up

You mean they trusted all the gidrool starters vs the O’s but not Tanaka

      They’re wasting the entire pen
Tanaka should have demanded they start him today
Pitch the guys they don’t trust vs the lesser team
      Or stay on schedule

More Girardi trying to be the smartest guy in the room

German must be Tanaka depth tomorrow

7 runs still doesn’t seem like enough
4 pitchers and not out of the 5th

  4. Sung Min Kim @sung_minkim

Greg Bird just hit a hard foul off his leg and seemed to be in pain. Got some attention from the athletic trainer and back in at-bat now.

  6. Boston has been gifted Detroit today and then they play Philadelphia four straight games home and home yanks really need to win today

Detroit may have the worst bullpen in baseball

    • Wow an A-Bomb from Aa-Ron

The kid hits a 500 ft HR and runs around the bases with his head down looking embarrassed

Ortiz would still be Cadillac-ing and he couldn’t hit it that far
