Mall Ball

Thanks to  Moscone for the great  write up

Tremendous night at the Mall On Rivera Avenue. Walking by the old Stadium, where only a baseball field now exists, I was reminded how much I miss the old place.
“Meetcha at the bat”, was the cry heard from friends attending the games. There was always a buzz around the ballpark. You might find a brass band playing outside, or a guy with a small amp wailing like Hendrix for tips in his open guitar case.
I knew the wonderful woman in the Loge who worked the popcorn machine for years wearing a Yankee hat with every button imaginable on it and a warm inviting smile on her face.
Inside, it was cramped & intimate. Upon entering the Gate behind home plate, you were assaulted with the sounds & smells of ethnic foods indigenous to NY. It was a cacophony to the senses!!

The fans were right on top of one another, and, because of the design of the Stadium, right on top of the players on the field. The stands, especially the Loge & Grandstand, weren’t set back as they are in the new Mall, but were almost hovering over the field. Intimidating. That’s what this place used to be. Teams hated to come in here to play. They hated the fans, who were almost right on top of them. It was LOUD!!!!!!

I was lucky enough to be there for, among others, Chambliss’s HR, Reggie hitting 3 WS HR in Game 6, Guidry striking out 18, the fight when Nettles clocked Bill Lee, Wells’s perfecto, Tino’s 2 out HR in the 9th followed by Jeter’s stroke of midnight Mr November moment, the Aaron Boone Game, catching a foul ball off of Andy Philipps & having the crowd yell “Yeah! The guy in the suit made a nice catch”, & on & on it goes.
And the characters that used to inhabit that place that you don’t see anymore!! Too numerous to mention (RIP Freddy Sez).

This new place is antiseptic & PC. The Loge & Grandstand is set back away from the field. Further distancing the fans from the field.
And, of course, you have the Lonn Trost Memorial Moat, keeping the unwashed masses away from the field. Back in the day, a father could bring his son down to the field during BP and maybe get an autograph. Not anymore. Inaccessible, unless you have a Moat ticket. One of the big mistakes they made in building this place. Disenfranchising the next generation of fans. Fucking brilliant!!

This place will NEVER be as loud & as intimidating as the old place! Never!
I had a good time last night, enjoying the Yankee win, & ending the losing streak.
But, I miss the old place.

I’ll say this about Adams: I actually don’t think he was outstanding. Didn’t have great offspeed at times. But man, stuff so dominant

Entering tonight, Yankees had 5 losses when leading at start of 7th inning. Last year they had 6 of those all season.
