DeadLine Darlings

with 12 comments

Well  the Yanks won the back pages yesterday trading away  three of their top prospects the media insists they didn’t need for Oakland gunslinger light Sonny Gray..

Hey it’s not their farm system, and as Joel Sherman one of the media darlings who piled on Brian Cashman  like an 18 wheeler load of blacktop to make this trade explains, it had to happen, it was the Cubs template for winning it all in 2016…!

How nice of Joel to  explain how a team with  27 scalps hanging off their belt was tutored by Theo Epstein who  took  6 years and now one empty farm  system to  win 1 Ring for a desperate team who  hadn’t sipped then grape in October / November since 1908…

Of course Sherman mentions the Yanks don’t have a Kris Bryant, and you know what they don’t have an Anthony Rizzo  either, but they  were starting to get production  a year ahead of schedule from Judge, Frazier, and Severino… Sanchez has regressed some, but if you thought he’d prorate his 2016 August outburst then you lose the farm…

If the SanBino  doesn’t get injured donning the tools he should stack up  as one of the great Bomber catchers we’ve been blessed to  see suit up, so  we’re not knocking #24..

Sherman has no problem fast forwarding barely drinking age Gleyber Torres and Miguel Andujar into a World Series heroes role  next year, and of course Greg Bird’s name still gets thrown around like he’s Birdie Baseball

Outside of a  nice 46 game, 178 PA, .261 /.343 /.529 /.871 slash, 11 HR’s, and 31 RBI’s in 2015,  Greg Bird hasn’t done jack-shit except get hurt, but never let the facts get in the way of a good click bait storyline

So Six Inning Sonny who hasn’t pitched in a meaningful game since he was a 23 year old stud in 2013, is here to  catapult  the Baby Bombers to  #28….? Gray’s “big game experience” was an 8 inning 4 hit  Game 2 gem vs the Tigers  the A’s won in walk off fashion 1-0, he didn’t get the Win, but he did go toe to  toe with Verlander

Sonny came back in game 5, pitched 5 innings gave up  3 runs and the Tigers took the game and the ALDS series 3 games to  1… This is where Gray  made his bones, 4 years ago…

He hasn’t pitched over 200 innings in a season since 2015, in 2016 he broke down and pitched to  a 5.36 ERA over 117 innings.. This year  he’s been better, starting 16 low pressure  games 10 of them in an Oakland Bone Yard  tossing 97 innings, ( 6 inning average) compiling a 3.43 ERA

At home in a pitchers park he’s pretty good

 .308 ERA / .208 /.273 /.305 / .578,

On the road he’s still pretty good, but not  as impressive

4.02 ERA / .262 /.311 /.440 /.751

Here’s one tidbit all  the gung ho pundits left out of their plea for a juicy storyline

Gray has a good track record against the Blue Jays (2.54 ERA in six career starts), but he hasn’t been quite as successful against the Rays (3.93 ERA in nine starts), Red Sox (5.16 in four starts) and Orioles (5.57 ERA in four starts).

That includes five starts at Camden Yards and Fenway Park in which he’s racked up a 7.88 ERA (21 ER in 24 IP).

Welcome to NY Sonny, welcome to  the smash mouth AL East, where stadiums are Band Boxes and men hide the women and children… No worries, Sonny is a ground ball pitcher, like Rick Porcello, who’s only given up  27 more hits then innings pitched, and 25 Taters..

Don’t get me wrong Sonny is an upgrade over Caleb Smith, Luigi Cessa, and the GumBino, so the Yanks now have a starting rotation built for October……..Per Sherman  and all his BFF’s in the media business…

The media  touted Cashman as GM of then year, and the Miami Mook Jon Heyman said Cash  hit a Grand slam…!

Of course he did Jon, you and your pals would have been wiping egg off your face for days after practically putting Gray in Pinstripes for the last 2 weeks

Anyway  we wish nothing but the best  for  Jorge Mateo a kid Cashman  went on the radio  and said had bigger upside then Gleyber Torres, but not the results..

Dustin Fowler who  was ahead of Clint Frazier on the depth  chart, imagine if he didn’t crash land into  a wall, Frazier might have gone to Oakland yesterday?

And UCLA star James Kaprielian easily the Bombers best pitching prospect.. Unfortunately No Games James has taken up  residence at the DL hotel since being drafted in the first  round, but the make up  and the potential upside was 2013 Sonny Gray….!

Hey why take your time to  prepare a long and tedious home cooked meal, when  you can  grab a quick Burger, fries and beverage At Billy B’s Burgers and Shake House

Yanks Hunt Down  the Tigers 7-3

The Bombers now have their game plan intact, and Cashman  had enough confidence in his assembled troops to go after the AL East Division and not use the season  as an audition for 2018 /19…As fans we should be happy, and we are, just  a bit confused if it’s a real playoff run, or a quick  fix to fill  seats  the Mall at Rivera Avenue over the last 2 months of the season?

The Bombers showcased their new playoff team last night with a 7-3 win over the Sell mode Tigers…It was an impressive showing beating the Tiger Ace Michael Fulmer..

They  turned an insidious Ian Kinsler error in the the 4th inning into  a 4 run frame which  snuffed out a 1-0 Detroit lead..

Newly appointed Ace Luis Severino pitched like anything but an Ace needing 115 pitches to barley crawl out of the 5th inning, but for the 3rd day in row Joey Claps worked his newly revamped bull pen like a Chinese sweat shop en-route to  the victory

Let’s see how long this lasts with P-Joe’s pitchers inability to  even pitch 6 innings no less the new era  complete game of 7…?

The Bomber offense only picked up  7 hits, but they  finally got 3 of the 7 in a timely fashion going 3 for 3 with RISP… Chase Headley had 3 of the 7 hits,  the ToddFather, and  the WoodPecker all came up  clutch in that regard..

The stumbling Aaron Judge hit a HR, and worked 2 walks, only struck out once so the heat  will be off him and will now be directed at Six Inning Sonny who  will make a start in a few days on the road…

Tommy Co Kahnle gifted a 5-1 lead pitched his 1 inning, he did give up  2 hits and a run, threw  20 pitches but managed to stop the bleeding at 5-2…

Betances followed with a 21 pitch 7th inning, walked 1, Sanchez had a passed ball, but D-Bet never let the Tigers bite him

With Cessa having to  go back to AAA, Cashman brought up  Jonathan  Holder and the gidrool pitched a clean  1 hit 8th inning.. He was gifted a 7-2 lead  and  he immediately trashed the 9th inning loading the bases on 2 singles and a HBP…

Chapman  was summoned to  clean up Holder’s mess and he did… After a fielder’s choice RBI, he ended the game on a punch out and the Bombers held onto  their 0.5 game lead in the AL East with Boston shellacking Cleveland at Fenway

So  the Yanks on the first  day of the rest of the new season bagged themselves a wounded Tiger

  1. I am pretty excited about whats been going on with the Yanks lately, winning again and especially the trades. I don’t understand the negativity about getting Garcia and Gray, they are both light years better than the shit they have been throwing out there. To get Gray they gave up an outfielder with one leg,a pitcher with one arm-the wrong one-and a prospect who had been a suspect. I think they made a great deal and
kept all their really prized prospects, including Frazier. Last week was the anniversary of the Yanks getting David Cone in 95 for their 3 top pitching prospects, only one of whom pitched in the majors with a 6.97 era
while Cone led them to the playoffs and 4 World Series. Gray is not David Cone,we can hope he becomes
as good, but lets win!! Its been a lot more fun the past 10 days since they started winning again, which coincides with the earlier trade with the White Sox. The Yanks are in first place, they need to stay there.

    • Hey Big D great take, and I’m rooting hard for it to come to fruition…. I love all the cards being on the table….

Gray is a big upgrade over what we did have, I totally agree….

… I have an exception to how the media made it sound like Gray was a no brainer and the Yanks didn’t give up their top prospects…. How do they know who the top prospects are, these kids we have have played 2 and a half months….? The kids we gave up weren’t helping this year probably not next year either, but they were potential trade chips for the off season when Retail isn’t as obvious…

I’m in the 1 percent that’s not ecstatic about the trade, I get it, and they were going nowhere if they didn’t do something… The point I want to make, how did we get the Great Sonny Gray for a malcontent SS, and two very badly injured players?

And how come every team in the supposed Sonny Gray sweepstakes bailed out?

You mean they couldn’t match a malcontent SS who didn’t start to hit until he got to AA a month ago, and two players grossly injured with no guarantee they will ever live up to the hype?

That said I’m as excited as the next NYY fan over the potential, I just got tired of reading 99.9% positive reaction to the trade, something didn’t and doesn’t sit right with me yet….

I hope Sonny becomes Cone, I hope he can help take it to the house, I hope he stays healthy…..

And yes lets hang on to first place for dear life lol…

  2. http://www.nj.com/yankees/index.ssf/2017/08/are_yankees_loading_up_international_bonus_pool_mo.html#incart_river_index

Yanks collecting a lot of IFA dough.. Smart move the best players for cheap are the IFA kids… gives Cash more prospects to trade

At some point in time a team will finally figure out how to keep 35 usable roster replacements that aren’t Jon Holder, Mason Williams, Rob Refsynders, because guys get hurt, and when you replace them the quality of player drops significantly…….

Maybe the system is set up for it to work that way, and it is what it is…

  3. Lets hope CC can get them 6 and change or this mighty pen will start to leak from overuse… Green and Kahnle are already leaking baserunners and runs scored….But that’s baseball Suzyn…

  4. well it looks like Sonny’s first detail is facing Kluber on Friday… Monty is scheduled, but good chance he gets bumped,

for some reason Girardi doesn’t want to go to a 6 man rotation, despite Tanaka being better on long rest, Sabathia being 300 pounds of heavenly joy, Severino up against an innings limit, Monty up against an innings limit, I don’t know anything about Garcia……. Welcome to NY Sonny…

  8. it’s almost a no brainer they pitch Sonny on Wednesday and move Tanaka back for the extra day… Unless they want him going up against Cleveland?

Sonny Gray is expected to start Thurs, Garcia Friday, Montgomery Saturday, Severino Sunday #yankees

    She also said
This could flip flop, Sonny still not in town

Monty goes Sat based on Sev’s 116 pitches last night so Sev gets pushed back

6 man rotation for 1 go around barring injury
