Lester the Molester

with 19 comments

Well  we won’t have to  watch Jon Lester kick the Yanks ass anymore, at least not 5 times a year.

Big Jon told John Henry and Larry Lucchino to  stick their home town discount where the sun don’t shine and was inked for 6 yr’s and $155M with an option yr by his old boss Theo Epstein.

Lester will move to the North  Side of Chicago for the next 6 seasons and pitch in the softer league with no DH. That’s a kool $25.8M per for the World Series and playoff hero, and it starts the Cano  type rebuild for the Chicago Cubs

Similar to  what Seattle did by overpaying Cadillac Cano, the Cubbies did with  Lester, it’s like putting the We’re Open For Business sign on the front door.

In the end Henry did have to fake crawling  back to Lester on his hands and knees, but gasing up  the  private jet plane to  fly to Atlanta for a faux Boston photo opt, and wearing out the knees on a 2,000 dollar pair of dress pants is a lot less expensive then shelling out $155M on a pitcher Boston never wanted to  pay long term in the first place

Yes you can  chisel this on my head stone, Henry is breathing a sigh of relief this morning that Lester decided to  bolt Boston

See kids, and Junior GM / baseball team owners, it pays to  embarrass your best pitcher with an offer that  is less then half his market value, it insures you won’t have to  get stuck paying him in the end despite Henry designing a publicity stunt in an effort to do  everything possible to  resign him..

Right, and Al Shady Sharpton and the St Louie Klan boys will be breaking bread today

The good news is the Yanks don’t have to  contend with a dominant LHP who  owns them, and now Boston will have to  battle the rest of the Lester losers for a cheaper alternative

Scherzer will be way  too  expensive for Boston’s weak  stomach, while Hamels and Cueto just  became prospect intensive if any team wants to grab the last 2 studs that  seem available in a trade..

Once you trade for the two  aforementioned hurlers your still  gonna have to pay  them  a substantial AAV, Hamels will  want to be either extended past his 4 yr’s with an option, or you’ll have to pick up his 5th year making him a 5 for around $114M value, close to Tanaka AAV or $22.8M. Plus Philly, unless Amaro  has lost his mind completely will  also  want at least  2 top prospects, one being Betts or Bogaerts and no  doubt Swihart or Vazquez plus a kid pitcher

That  hurts if your Boston who has built up  their hyped up prospects to  the untouchable level. Ceuto  will  also  cost more then just Cespedes, plus Cueto  will only cost $10M in 2015, but he’s a free agent  after this season and the way  top  of the rotation pitchers are being paid, Johnny Cueto  will  also get his over pay, plus your losing prospects

Must be tough being as Smaht as Boston’s front office

Meanwhile the Yanks should try to  grab McCarthy for Liriano  type money before  teams start  to offer him 4 yr’s and over $60M. Hopefully the teams that  lost out on Lester will  concentrate on Hamels / Cueto / Zimmerman who  will  zap your farm  system too.

They  will  also  hit Cincy up for Latos,  Leake and Simon, the Yanks will  still overpay  for McCarthy but how much is the question, and they  really shouldn’t use top rated prospects in a trade for a #3 type pitcher

Scherzer will  want $200M, but if the Giants who offered Lester $168M  make him a $180M offer that might stick once Boras wears out his $200M welcome mat. Bumgarner and Scherzer, that’s not a bad consolation  prize for a team that lost Lester and Frisco Fats, two  huge over pays.

Let’s also  hope the Headley market crashes and 3 for $39M comes into play or Victorino money..

  2. the Yanks aren’t in on Scherzer although they should be, or Lester so Boston or any AL East team losing out is a plus..

    Now the battle for McCarthy,

Liriano helped by signing a reasonable deal, Yanks need to move quick before some desperate Lester loser knee jerks stupid money to McCarthy and the Yanks are left holding their nuts and no starters..

  3. Donny there are no bats to get, we have to wait on that, none in free agency, and none to get via a trade, that’s the landscape at the moment

shoot for the middle like Headley and Reynolds, you won’t get hurt that way lol…

  4. Glad to hear that Red Sawx Nation won’t find Lester under their Christmas tree this year! It’s always a good day when Beantown comes up on the short end of the stick. I had heard that the Yanks were talking with Sherzer’s people, but maybe I got that wrong. Yeah, better sign McCarthy fast before the price goes up! Hey Donny! I have that same Bronx Bombers shirt! Only mine is long sleeve, and I only wear it at home. No need right now to put a bullseye on my chest!

  5. So much for Lester going back to Boston-that always was just bs.McCarthy wants 4yrs/$48 but is he really worth it? Lots of ink in the papers about Yanks not having a closer and going by a committee-I would have to see it to believe it. Buck is complaining already about the other teams in the East spending while the O’s sit around with their thumbs up their behinds. No one is stopping them, they were very fortunate last year with Cruz, saw they may have interest in Marlon Byrd.Having the sux lose Lester helps ease the loss of Robertson.

  6. hey boys, thanks for the takes.. 4 for $48M, $12M per….. If they’re gonna go on the cheap, grab him, that 4th yr is a cock block, but it spreads out the AAV, maybe that’s the alluring aspect

    Saw that potential Miley trade

    I don’t see Scherzer, hope i’m wrong…

Poor Buck, Agelos doesn’t want to spend any money, no wonder Duke wants to go work for Toronto

I wonder if Amaro asks for Gausman in a Byrd deal?

Romo always looked like he had good stuff, I wonder what KC would want for Davis? I did hear they might want to put him back in the rotation, $25M over the next 3 yr’s man’s that’s a value starter if he can eat 180 innings times 3.. Probably would have to extend him in his option yr, but good way v to get him under book, just gotta hope he can start, he used to

  8. Hey Big D, yeah I was dropping stuff last night only on the wrong post , Fucked up.. from last night

Dodgers get McCarthy, way to go Cash…. Somebody wake up Cashman tell him there is a war going on Kendrick and Rollins to LA nice moves.. Friedman is pulling a Michael Corleone tonight wow

this is how you build a Championship team Cash pay attention to the kid from Tampa you might learn something

Yanks must have a bigger plan, or no plan maybe

let’s face it they’re not going anywhere in 2015, might as well tank the season, and start to get higher draft choices

Miley to Boston for two kids their fan base thought were big time prospects.. So that finalizes the Crawford Beckett Gonzalez Punto heist Boston ends up with salary flex in 2013 and Wade Miley

  9. These are new times for the Yanks and us fans-we have become peripheral players instead of the stars of the
meetings. The Dodgers are going for it,getting Kendrick has to help the Yanks,it always killed them!! Unless things radically change, dumpster diving will be the way Cashman gets new players.Hal is tightening the purse strings despite what he had said about going for the championship.Just heard on the wfan that the sux traded Cespedes to the Tigers for Porcello-don’t worry they still suck!!

  10. hey Big D, yes I don’t think the Yanks are going anywhere in 2015, maybe not until they ween off the Albatross deals so maybe we’re in Tank mode, then we grab some higher draft choices

Too bad they got Porcello for Cespedes, I was hoping it would hurt Boston more but they’re keeping all their home grown prospects

Webster and De La Rosa have live arms but LA threw them in that salary dump deal for a reason and Miley as a return for both of them is living proof

I’m a big Porcello fan so I hate seeing a ground ball pitcher going to Boston.. the Nation still thinks they can get Hamels now that they’ve loaded up on #3’s in the rotation we’ll see if that’s the case

Let’s hope Amaro insists on Beyys or bogaerts plus Swihart or Vazquez that will hurt Boston to trade those guys

I’m guessing the Kemp deal will piss off the LA media

  14. “I felt I proved a lot last year,” Robertson said. “I had been in the eighth inning for so long that I think people were worried I wouldn’t be able to handle pitching the ninth.

“But I looked at it as getting the same three or four outs I always had, just an inning later. Following Mo really didn’t bother me much. Mo taught me everything I needed to know, and I was ready to go out and prove I could close.”

still not sold on closer mentality label.. man if you got wicked stuff you have confidence to get 3 outs at anytime would be my guess.. On nights your tired or don’t have it your screwing the pooch regardless..

  15. “I had a lot of people call me about Rick, which would not surprise you,” Dombrowski said. “He’s a quality pitcher. It would make sense that they would inquire about him. But he’s also one of the few guys that had the ability to be able to acquire Cespedes.”

Dombrowsky is as big a loser as Cashman, the guy spends more money then just about anybody and comes up short every yr.. i mean you have Price, Scherzer, Verlander, Sanchez, Porcello, Cabrera the 2 Martinez guys, Hunter and you can’t get out of the ALDS

now he gift wraps Porcello for a guy who will want a king’s ransom as a free agent with Jay Z as his agent and it’s gonna cost a huge overpay for a guy who barely gets on base 30% of the time and who doesn’t have a pick tied to his free agency so your getting nothing if you let him walk

Boston was gonna have a hard time flipping Cespedes for all those reasons until this dolt took the bait…

maybe he’ll resign him they have the money

  16. is Sherman kidding, of course they never wanted Lester but they had to fake a run at him for publicity sake

Boston made him an offer he had to refuse, $20M less then the Cubs

  18. Don’t think Cashman or Hal wanted any part of the original $107M for 5 yr’s on Kemp Donny… LA ate $30M so it’s a reasonable AAV of 5 for $77M or $15.4M per yr

Once they committed to the Doughboy, Brett the Face and the $15M per for 2 for Beltran the budget went out the window for out fielders

Kemp could be a Teixeira waiting to happen too, Friedman wanted him gone for a few reasons, attitude adjustment, and he sold high

Yasmani Gandal isn’t gonna make anybody forget Yogi but he’s another kid with upside, under team control and is considered to have hit into bad luck… I don’t think LA wanted Gary Sanchez, and they may have taken Murphy but he’s not a proven everyday catcher yet

My guess the Yanks didn’t want another injury risk almost $16M AAV on the team plus lose a Murphy

Yanks aren’t gonna spend money, they have a huge rotation issue right now and they need to sign Headley for depth
