Yanks Lose a Battle, but Win the War
The Bombers were on the road in Polk County Fla. to play the Detroit Tigers and despite losing 3-0, they received arguably the most favorable results we’ve seen in the first 3 games
Bryan Mitchell, first round pick James Kaprelian, and the 798th pick in 2008 Kirby Yates, tossed 5 no hit no run innings..
Luis Cessa who came to the Bronx in the Justin Wilson trade pitched 2 scoreless innings giving up 1 hit
Unfortunately Cousin Vinnie Pestano hit a batter, walked a batter, then served a Pestano Meatball to Miggy Cabrera and the Migster poked it over the right center field wall for a 3 run Tater
Miggy’s 3 run bomb scored the only runs in this game, but the buzz in Bomber camp was Mitchell and Kaprelian, 2 kids that are being counted on to save Hal Steinbrenner from poverty…
The last frontiers to conquer on this 2016 team are the last bench spot, and the bull pen… Chapman’s suspension opens a 30 game window for one of the Shuttle butts, but the spot Girardi needs to fill the most is Adam Warren’s old Ramiro Mendoza Swiss Army knife job
“I think everyone knows where the spots are,” Mitchell said. “Everyone’s battling, you know?”
There was a lot of chatter yesterday that it’s Mitchell’s job to lose, and his two clean innings sans the HBP, has him wearing the Yellow Jersey
“The ability is there,” Joe Girardi said. “As I said last year, his role, it was a tough role because there were a lot of days in between pitching and not sure exactly what he was going to do, but the idea is to get him on track. … He has three or four pitches and his cutter was good today. It’s just getting him on track.”
Of course there was no TV so we couldn’t see the action, but the Tigers announcers were raving about Mitchell’s arm.. Larry the Stable Guy immediately came into the clubhouse with a big Fire Hose and blasted the Hot topic with cold water
Larry Rothschild said he would have liked to have seen Mitchell dictate the count a little better — only 12 of 25 pitches were strikes — but Rothschild also dismissed that as typical early control problems. When he had to, Mitchell made pitches and got through his two innings with a low pitch count.
Mitchell did admit he was a bit antsy and could have been over throwing, and despite Girardi saying he’s not going to be impressed in the first 2 weeks of camp, these kids know every outing is a must win battle, at least that’s the case for Mitchell
So far Mitchell, Kaprelian, Yates, and Cessa have out pitched Severino in the first go round, and it’s gonna be at least another week before Severino gets a start…We might see him pitch two innings behind Tanaka, Pineda, Sabathia, Nova or Eovaldi next week though..
The other buzz in camp came from 22 yr old James Kaprelian’s 2 inning outing.. Again the Tigers announcers were very complimentary of this kid’s outing
Kaprelian is the type of kid you love having on your team, he appears to have Greg Bird type make-up, and with the turmoil he’s been through he’s real easy to root for.
“All the guys at the big league level, they’ve all been through what I’m going through right now,” Kaprielian said after throwing 26 pitches, hitting 96 mph with his fastball on seven of then. “I’m going to lean on them, listen to them. They’ve been in my shoes. I take what I can to get better.”
Anyway as Rothschild said it’s only one outing, he said the same thing when Severino couldn’t find home plate working out of the stretch..
Kaprelian is still a year out, but there is a possibility he can fast track from Staten Island rookie league, to single A, to Double A this season…
Kapreilan, Mateo, Judge, Bird, Sanchez, Severino, might be the biggest names to follow this season, if these kids pan out the new Yankees will be back in business come 2018…
unrelated to baseball but, next time a 1 per center whines about payroll, or the cost of doing business, don’t be afraid to tack on an extra 20% to his or her’s bill…

not sure why Two Chins mentions the Yanks continue their stability while Boston keeps changing their in house philosophy.. Steinbrenner messed up big time in 2013, then spent foolishly in 2014
Boston has tanked 3 of the last 4 yr’s, they went the same route as the Astros and the old Rays, except they can bounce back much quicker because the have a huge revenue stream.. they can afford over $600M in free agent signings so they’re a hell of a lot more dangerous then any team in baseball… they’re allowed to tank, and tanking allows you to pick high in the draft
Boston is also ahead of the Yanks when it comes to prospect position players contributing
Betts, Bogaerts Swihart and Bradley are ahead of anything Cashman has produced… I’d say Murphy was equal if not better then Swihart’s first season, but Swihart is highly touted and this season will dictate if he’s on his way or not
Bird was also on his way to equalling what Betts and Bogaerts are but only if he can stay healthy
Judge hasn’t proven anything yet, neither has Sanchez… Severino and Eduardo Rodriguez are a wash
Owens and Mitchell are a compare, and Kaprelian could put the Yanks ahead of Boston in the prospect pitching department

I liked this kid Mitchell ever since I first saw him last year. Love his arm & like his moxie! Showed me a lot coming back so quickly after getting hit in the face. I got a good feeling about this kid going forward. But then again, I had a good feeling about Dan Pasqua, Johnny Ellis, & Steve Whitaker. So WTF do I know!!!

First of all, don’t even mention Hoffman in the same breathe as the great Rivera. No freakin’ comparison. And, if Kimbrel has greatness for 19 yrs, THEN, we can talk about a comparison! Let’s see him do it in continually high pressure situations. And, let’s not discount the fact that Mo held his best for playoff & WS appearances! NO ONE comes close! There’s Mo, then there’s everyone else!! This writer embarrasses himself by even suggesting the comparison!!!

why does Cashman waste Hal’s money with guys like Cloyd? why do the Yankees charge admission then put guys who had a 5 plus ERA in Korea on the mound?
I know it’s ST but really

Cloyd gave up a triple & single,Yanks sent him to North korea-lol Guys like him are just there to eat innings in spring training-but they should not be starting games. Shreve looked good in his inning, maybe he figured out what was wrong with him.I saw that he may have been tipping his pitches. The showed Brickhouse from a distance on top of the hill they have on the back fields-need to get her a little closer!-lol
Moscone you mentioned most of the never great Yankees-Ross Moschitto,Jack Reed(the Micks caddy),
Otto Velez. Mateo just homered!!! Gotta keep playing him!!! He needs a # lower than 93-lol

Hey Big D! Actually, Moschitto was Mantle’s caddy as well. Saw him take over center late in the game for the Mick many times. Didn’t want to clog up the blog with the cavalcade of names of almost “Great Yankees” down thru the years! Lol! Ahhhhh, the great Otto Velez & who can forget Stan Bahnson! Ha!

Moscone there were just an incredible amount of those guys through the years, have to hope some of the touted youngsters don’t turn out that way. Yanks won today,George quit spinning. Judge hit an opposite field 3 run bomb to ice it-although the scrub bullpen made sure it got close. We need to see more of the kids in spring training.

You’re right, son. The list seems endless. I’m waiting for some better pics of Brickhouse after her winter on the “see food” diet! The girls look enormous!!!

hey fellas, great stuff….. what a great day, Mateo has made it fun, great seeing Judge get into one…You figure they’re gonna need 35 to 40 guys this yr so I’m digging on watching these kids
We better enjoy Mateo, at some point Cashman will send him to the minor league camp, he’s not on the 40 man… We’ll be getting a steady diet of Kozma and Ronald Torreyes
